The y ear 2004 w as full o f political events, such as the accession o f 10 European countries (including Poland) to th e European U nion and the questions o f selection o f moral orientation o f the united Europe. There w ere also signifi­ cant anniversaries, such as the 60th anniversary o f m em ora­ ble battle o f M onte C assino and especially o f the W arsaw Uprising. Love for the Fatherland, soldierly ethos and chivalrous ethos are very close to the ideals o f valor and honor present in the ethical system s o f ancient and present w arriors, and also in hum anistic theories o f m artial arts and com bat sports.

There appeared publications significant for deve­ lopm ent o f these theories, interesting conferences and other events took place o f w hich w e inform in our m agazine. F irst o f all, how ever, w e gathered, through content-related selection, interesting articles w hich w e publish in this volum e. Som e o f them are an invitation to discussion by undertaking the interdisciplinary problem s and som etim es controversial subjects.

The Editorial S taff do their best to constantly increase the scientific level o f ou r magazine. The review ers o f the volum e 4 „IR K -M C ” w ere Prof. A ndrzej A ndrusiew icz Ph.D., a sociologist and historian from The U niversity o f Rzeszów, m anaging the Institute o f Eastern Research, and Prof. Bogdan M yckan Ph.D., a professor o f sciences o f physical culture and o f m edical sciences, form er m em ber o f th e U krainian A cadem y o f Sciences from th e U niversity in Iw ano-Frankowsk. For giving opinion on the volum e 5 there w ere asked once again an expert in the history and cultures o f the East, Prof. A ndrzej A ndrusiew icz, and also a professor o f philosophy from Pedagogical U niversity in K rakow Jan Szm yd and a doctor o f sciences o f physical culture Juliusz M igasiew icz, a professor at University o f Physical Education in W roclaw . Thus, to ensure high content-related level o f contents presented in ou r Y earbook the texts are review ed separately by experts in given fields, as well as additionally in the layout o f the w hole volum e. In addition, for giving opinion on this volum e for m otions for points o f Copernicus Index and K B N w e asked an expert in the field o f martial arts and com bat sports, an em ployee o f the Institute o f O utside-European C ountries o f Polish A cadem y o f Sciences, Prof. Stanisław Tokarski Ph.D., - an orientalist, philosopher and sociologist.

H onorable Readers surely noticed the new form at o f th e Y earbook (A4). In order to gain m agical points o f the Com m ittee o f Scientific R esearch w e m ade som e m odifica­ tions in the regulations o f our m agazine according to indications o f C opernicus Index. W e ask especially A u ­ thors and R eview ers to g et acquainted w ith the new regulations and instructions for A uthors placed at the end o f the volum e. In particular, the significant novum is, how e­ ver, specifying the them atic profile o f our magazine. Thus the contents o f th e w orks should as closely as possible concern the problem s o f general theory o f culture (inclu­ ding e.g. sociology and philosophy o f culture, cultural anthropology), culture and psychophysical education, history and anthropology o f martial arts and research within the scope o f com bat sports. Thus w e will still approach m an and society in the holistic way: w e will interpret martial art and com bat sports on the borderline o f theory o f sport and hum anistic sciences; w e will present w ider cultu­ ral contexts and w e will prefer interdisciplinary' research. However, w e w ill limit the possibility o f publication o f w orks straying too m uch from the indicated profile.

This fifth volum e contains articles on history o f martial arts and com bat sports, philosophy, sociology and cultural anthropology, oriented to practical application o f theory o f sport and pedagogy, and also w ithin the scope o f m ilitaiy, m oral, esthetical and language culture. A part from this, this num ber contains a series o f discussions and review articles on new interesting books, announcem ents on conferences and inform ation on im portant scientific, sport or artistic events.A t the sam e tim e I am inviting y ou to o u r forum o f dialogue, w here w e publish content-related polem ics. W e do not avoid difficult subjects. T h e endeavor to the scientific truth is the obligation both in particular disciplines and from a w ider holistic perspective. This tim e Prof. W. Zabłocki in his text o f the opinion on th e scientific output o f Zbigniew C zajkow ski, our excellent collaborator, w ho w as granted this y ear the honorable doctorate honoris causa o f U niversity o f Physical Education in K atow ice, expresses his view on the theory o f fencing and m ethodology o f training. In turn, D r W o lters ex p resses his opin io n on th e su b jec t o f p ed a g o g y o f sport.

A part from many com plim entaiy assessments there also appeared tw o critical opinions on our magazine. W e will try not to repeat the mistakes made. On request o f Prof. W. Bożiłow I inform that I put his nam e in the previous volume without his written consent, for w hich I apologize. A s to other members o f Scientific or Editorial Comm ittee I am convinced o f durability o f settlements, even the verbal ones.

A leksander K ubinyi Ph.D., w ho used to w ork a t the Jagiellonian University, and at present w orks at the U niversity o f Rzeszów, jo in ed O ur Board. Soon w e are to start a closer cooperation w ith the Jagiellonian Library and w ith the C enter o f Japanese A rt and Technique “M anggha” in K rakow celebrating its 10th anniversary. O ur collabora­ tors from G erm any, H ungary and D enm ark are m ore and m ore active. Therefore the Editorial S taff decided to accept for publication the texts in the G erm an language. H owever, w e are w aiting for greater activeness and for articles o f Chinese, Japanese and K orean researchers. A lso coope­ ration w ith A m erican researchers is still far from being satisfactory. H ow ever, to the group o f collaborators joined shihan Jan D yduch, the holder o f the highest in Poland degree in the Japanese karate (7 dan), the leader o f Polish Federation o f K arate and the representative o f W OKO. A lso several other leaders o f Polish organizations o f martial arts expressed w illingness to start a closer cooperation.

O ur collaborator A drian Piórko invites to the websites o f the Internet portal w w w .oyam aportal.prv.pl and he obliges him self to follow the inform ation essential for the hum anistic theory o f martial arts on the Internet. There is being m ade the w ebsite o f our A ssociation w w w .idokan.prv.pl, edited by Paw eł Tuszyński. The m agazine is abstracted in C opernicus Index, for w hich, in tum , W ojciech B ajorek is responsible. W e have already sent the copies o f our Y earbook not to 16, but to 20 countries o f the world. I hope that if w e m anage in the tim e to achieve som e advantage o f English texts w ith greater participation o f foreign authors, w e will achieve significant position in the European m arket o f scientific periodicals.

O n the other hand, how ever, the scientific success is not the only aim o f our m agazine and w e w an t to publish it also for hum anization and education o f the environm ent - from a student to a coach and researcher - th e m ore so that in this w ay w e fill in som e gap in the Polish and w orld literary output.
