"The influence of phase transformations during tempering on the
microstructure and properties of chosen steels"
Optimal steel properties, such as strength, hardness and abrasion resistance are obtained through chemical composition and appropriate heat treatment. In hardened state, steels are characterised by high hardness and strength values, however their ductility index is low. Martensite, achieved by means of hardening, is metastable, therefore it is possible to change its properties through tempering. Tempering is the most important procedure that determines the final properties of the produced steel product.
The aim of this work it to establish the kinetics of phase transformations during low and medium tempering, with special emphasis on the precipitation and transformation of carbides and their influence on irreversible temper embrittlement.
In this work, three types of alloyed steels were investigated. The kinetics of phase transformations of undercooled austenite and during heating from hardened state were described. Microstructural analysis was carried out for tempered samples using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The changes in precipitation length in relation to tempering temperature were determined, along with shape coefficient. The established microstructural parameters were presented in relation to changes in strengthening properties. Based on the obtained results, the most probable cause of type irreversible temper embattlement was indicated. A solution for eliminating this disadvantageous effect was proposed, on the basis of investigations carried out at AGH University of Science and Technology.
The innovative aspect of this work consists in presenting the possibilities of achieving greater properties of low and medium tempered steels by changing the heating method for tempering.
