Mechanisation of cargo handling asks for mutual adaption of cargo, handling equipment and ship. The handling of bulk has led to the development of special ships and loading and discharging facilities with a mainly continuous transport. Efficient discontinuous transport of general cargo will only be possible when it is made up to permanent transport units of standardized dimensions, adapteds to the requirements of loading and mechanical stowage. The application of an international modular system for cargo transport media is of considerable importance. Analysis of the transport suggests application of ships with side-ports and "open-hath' ships.
