W rozprawie zaprojektowano, wykonano i przetestowano mobilny system bezpieczeństwa dla osób niewidomych. Opracowane urządzenie do wykrywania dziur i uskoków terenu wykorzystuje dalmierz na podczerwień w celu wyznaczenia odległości pomiędzy urządzeniem, a poziomem drogi. Dla zapewnienia wykrycia nawet małych uskoków, niezbędne okazało się opracowania systemu stabilizacji drgań spowodowanych chodem użytkownika urządzenia. Zaproponowano unikalny, dwustopniowy algorytm stabilizacyjny oparty na punktach zerowej prędkości (Zero Velocity Points - ZVP), wykorzystujący akcelerometr, żyroskop oraz filtr Kalmana i zaimplementowano algorytm pozwalający na wykrywanie małych uskoków terenu, schodów, itd., niezależnie od wzrostu osoby niewidomej oraz różnic w sposobie chodzenia.
Drugim kluczowym elementem urządzenia jest wielokanałowy dalmierz ultradźwiękowy, opracowany i zastosowany w celu wykrywania obiektów znajdujących się na wysokości klatki piersiowej i głowy osoby niewidomej.
Opracowano i wykonano 6-punktową bransoletkę wibracyjną jako element sygnalizujący o wykrytych przeszkodach i zagrożeniach, ich rodzajach i odległości od nich, dzięki temu możliwe jest przekazywanie wielu informacji o otoczeniu i przeszkodach przy użyciu kilku kodów wibracyjnych i co ważne przy braku ingerencji w zmysł słuchu (bardzo istotne podczas poruszania się osoby niewidomej na zewnątrz budynku). System przetestowano z udziałem osób niewidomych i słabowidzących pod nadzorem nauczycieli ze Specjalnego Ośrodka Szkolno-Wychowawczego dla Osób Niewidomych i Słabowidzących w Krakowie.
In the following doctoral thesis a mobile safety system to assist the blind was designed and tested. The developed device uses an infrared rangefinder to determine the distance between the device and the ground to detect holes and faults in the territory. In order to ensure a probability of detecting even minute, few-centimeter downcasts it was necessary to develop a system to stabilize vibrations caused when a device user was walking. Using an accelerometer, a gyroscope and the Kalman filter, a unique two-stage stabilization algorithm has been developed and implemented; the algorithm was based on the points of the zero velocity points (Zero Velocity Points - ZVP). Regardless of how tall a blind peron is or the way he or she walks, the algorithm allows to detect small faults, stair, etc.
Another subsystem of the device is a multi-channel ultrasonic rangefinder, designed, developed and implemented to detect objects at the head- or chest level of the blind. A six-point vibrating bracelet has been developed as an interface that signals the detected obstacles and threatening or dangerous situations, as well as the situation type and the distance to them. Using several vibration patterns, the initial learning and once the user gets accustomed to this type of communication it is possible to transfer a lot of information about the surroundings and obstacles without the interference in the sense of hearing which is important for a blind person when being outside.
The system has been tested among the blind and partially sighted persons under the supervision of teachers from the Special Educational Centre for Blind and Visual Impaired People in Kraków.
