I t seems obvious t o t h i n k t h a t A l e x a n d e r t h e G r e a t e n d o w e d t h e city with a βουλή ; a n d t h a t c o n s e q u e n t l y t h e city possessed also an assembly. T h e A l e x a n d r i -nes seem t o h a v e i n h e r i t e d t h e a t t r i b u t i o n s of t h e M a c e d o n i a n a r m y , which did n o t exist a n y m o r e in t h e I I c e n t . T h e old deno-m i n a t i o n of t h e a s s e deno-m b l y of t h e Macedonian a r deno-m y ( p o p u l u s , 'όχλος, τα πλήθη) seem t o design n o w t h e people of A l e x a n d r i a . T h e ga-t h e r i n g s of ga-t h e A l e x a n d r i n e p o p u l a ga-t i o n are p r o b a b l y regular as-semblies, c o n v o c a t e d on d e t e r m i n e d occasions a n d a t periodical regular d a t e s .
