CONGRESS OF POLISH STATISTICS

– REPORT AND THE PARTICIPATION

OF WROCŁAW UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS

RESEARCHERS

On 18–20 of April in Poznań, the Congress of Polish Statistics was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Polish Statistical Association. Co-organizers of the Congress were Polish Statistical Association, the Central Statistical Office, Statistical Office in Poznań and the Poznań University of Economics.

President of the Republic of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski, has assumed his honorary patronage over the Congress.

The purpose of the Congress was to remind the great history of activities of Polish Statistical Society, to enable the presentation of achievements, and to share insights between scientists gathered in academic institutions and employees of official statistics, who use in practice achievements in this field of science.

The meeting of many groups associated with the statistics also gave the opportunity to remind extraordinary achievements of Polish statisticians in the world.

Chairperson of the Organizing Committee was Assoc. Prof. Elżbieta Gołata from Poznań University of Economics. Chairman of the Scientific Committee was Professor Czesław Domański from the University of Lodz. Among the members of the Scientific Committee of Congress, there were also professors of Wrocław University of Economics: Krzysztof Jajuga and Walenty Ostasiewicz.

The Congress began with the plenary session, devoted to the presentation of achievements of Polish statistics. Professor Walenty Ostasiewicz presented a paper on the development of statistical ideas in Poland. He presented the history of statistics in Poland since the days of Jan Długosz, showing gradual changes in the science, and especially separation of practical and theoretical statistics and also mathematical and descriptive statistics. In this session Professor Krzysztof Jajuga also introduced his paper on the development of the Polish statistical ideas in economics. Professor Jajuga presented the achievements of 30 researchers from various historical periods as well as those of modern scientists. Chairman of this session was Professor Mirosław Krzyśko.

The next plenary session, chaired by Professor Czesław Domański, also concerned the development of Polish statistical ideas. In this session a very interesting lecture by

Professor Stanisława Bartosiewicz and Eżbieta Stańczyk, PhD, was presented. The intention of the authors was to make a partial comparison of three epochs of Polish history in the several, selected socio-economic issues. Topics dealt with in this paper are extremely rich, and because of inability to present it in a comprehensive way, the title of the paper was: Something about the Polish socio-economic history in the

years 1918–2008 (based on CSO).

The Congress was attended by many researchers and practitioners from Poland and from many European and American universities and statistical institutions. Among so many scientists, there was large representation of academics of the Wrocław University of Economics, who gave 14 papers. In other sessions, researchers from the Wrocław University of Economics, gave the following talks:

categorical data,

Justyna Wilk, PhD: Symbolic approach in regional analyses. –

During the Congress in the auditorium of the Adam Mickiewicz University an exhibition was opened: Polish Statistical Association in years 1912–2012 and Statistics in Wielkopolska.

Statistical Office in Poznań and the Polish Statistical Association organize a competition “Statystyka mnie dotyka” (“Statistics touches me”) in order to take care of the promotion of knowledge about the Polish official statistical services and statistical organizations. The competition is dedicated for high school students. During the Congress, the winners were officially presented.
