T h e t e s t a m e n t of Antonius Silvanus d a t e d 142 A.D. designated the person of H i e r a x as a procurator. T h e word procurator is h u t a translation of t h e word έπίτροπος. I t is beyond a n y d o u b t t h a t t h e E g y p t i a n law k n e w t h e executor of a t e s t a m e n t . T h e a p p o i n t m e n t of Antonius Silvanus as a t e s t a m e n t a r y executor meets perfectly w i t h t h e Greco-Egyptian law. B u t t h e execution of a t e s t a m e n t corresponds also to t h e general principles of t h e classical R o m a n law; t h e n his a p p o i n t m e n t as a procurator is n o t c o n t r a r y to this l a w .

The a u t h o r speaks of t h e j o i n t will of a certain P y t h i o n a n d a priestess being p r o b a b l y simultaneously his wife. This t y p e of t e s t a m e n t is a t t e s t e d u p to now only in R o m a n E g y p t considered for an original p h a e n o m e n o n of t h e G r e c o - E g y p t i a n law; its appe-arance in t h e Greek domain of t h e Hellenistic period s u p p o r t s t h e idea t h a t t h e joint-will t a k e s its origin f r o m Greece.
