"Mineralogical study of the osteoporosis phenomenon in human femoral head in relation to the X-ray densitometry examination"
The doctoral thesis has interdisciplinary character and is an example of using the mineralogical approach and analyses to address processes and pathological states occurring in the human skeletal system. The subject of analysis was the femoral head, which has been examined by both mineralogical and medical devices. The material for the investigation was retrieved from the patients who had implanted a hip joint endoprosthesis. The study involved a comprehensive DEXA and mineralogical analysis of density and mineralization of bone apatite which, along with collagen, is a building material of trabecular bone of the femoral heads. Densitometry allowed to determine the place of the greatest decline in bone mineral density (advanced osteoporosis) and create a model showing the spatial distribution of osteoporosis in the tested bones. The mineralogical studies were carried out using polarizing microscopy and a Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with the EDS analyser, and by X-ray diffraction analysis. These studies allowed for (i) the observation of the morphology of the trabecular bone with intratrabecular space and the network of collagen fibers mineralized by bone apatite; (ii) determine the size of individual trabecular and the space between the trabecular and (iii) an estimation of the ratio between calcium and phosphorus in the examined femoral heads.
