The subject of this dissertation is the application of molecular dynamics (MD) and swarm intelligence optimization for investigating the structure of polymers. The second group of techniques is a subclass of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. A special subject of interest is the structure of polymer crystallites. In the course of this work, a methodology combining the use of MD, AI and different experimental results as input and verification data was developed. This dissertation describes the research carried out within three distinct scientific projects with a common background. The objective of the first was determining a model of the crystallite of the polymer system of polyaniline doped with camphorsulfonic acid (PANI/CSA). By applying the combined study methodology, a model compatible with all available experimental data was developed. Such a model was not available in literature. The aim of the second project was modeling the interactions between layers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) of different tacticity and molecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), based on hexadecanethiol, deposited on the gold (111) surface. MD simulations of such systems suggested a polarization of the PMMA layer at the PMMA/SAM interface. The effect seemed to be highly sensitive to the local tacticity of the polymer chain. The third and final project concerned modeling the structure and dynamics of doped systems based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Models obtained by use of MD and AI suggested that the structure may be different depending on the type of counter ion, which is contrary to what is usually assumed.
