PREFACE

D ue to the gracious kindness o f the authorities o f the University in B iałystok, on M arch 5 th, 1999, in the Auditorium o f the Econom y Section, o f the university, in an atm osphere o f jubilation, the C hair o f O rthodox Theology o f the University in Białystok inaugurated it’s activity. This is the result o f the efforts o f the hierarchy o f our C hurch to increase the opportunities in our society to com e to know the theology, history and spirituality o f the Orthodox Church.

The Section o f O rthodox Theology, o f the Christian A cadam y o f T heology in W arsaw , which was called into being in 1957, w as the continuation o f the College o f O rthodox Theology o f the U niversity o f W arsaw . The C hair o f O rthodox Theology o f the University in B iałystok is a continuation and expansion o f the process o f education o f the U niversity o f W arsaw in the area o f theology. The U niversity in B iałystok was, after all, the filia o f the University o f W arsaw for fourty years. „N o one is like unto G od”. God, the m ost high W isdom , in His Providance, guides His Church and all who believe. The presence o f yet another unit o f education in our Church, is for us a sign o f D ivine Providance, and we accept it as an expression o f the W ill o f God, for w hich we are profoundly grateful to the M ost High.

The C ollege o f Orthodox Theology o f the University o f W arsaw used to publish an annual theological journal, called „E lpis” („H ope”). It published the scholarly papers o f the professors and teachers o f the College. In total there were thirteen editions o f the journal.

A fter the w ar, the publication o f „Elpis” w as not resum ed. A t it’s first w orking m eeting, the staff* o f the C hair o f Orthodox T heology o f the U niversity in Białystok, ratified the decision, that the C hair o f O rthodox Theology, being the continuation o f the College, will resum e the publication o f „Elpis”, as well as the other publicational activities o f the College.

In 1931 edition o f „Elpis”, the M etropolitan o f W arsaw and All o f Poland, Dionisios, wrote, in the preface, „The title („Elpis”) had sym bolic m eaning for several reasons, forem ost o f which was, our conviction that Orthodox Theological Science, in our conditions, in and under the care- o f the University o f W arsaw , is going to develop and with tim e will truly blossom, due to the faithful work o f the College o f O rthodox Theology.”

■ R esum ing the publication o f „Elpis”, by the Chair o f O rthodox Theology, our desire is that the words o f M etropolitan D ionisios, o f holy m em ory, will also be a reflection o f our own intentions.

W e hope, that the present annual publication o f „Elpis” (in the future bi-annual or even quarterly), will be a worthy continuation o f the previous issues o f this journal. W e shall m aintain a double num eration: the new num eration beginning with „1” and the num eration o f the C ollege’s „Elpis”, being „14”; in this way dem onstrating the continuation o f the publication o f the former editions.

Furtherm ore, in order to assist the reader in becoming fam iliar w ith the previous editions o f „Elpis”, in the present edition, we are including a com plete bibliography o f the positions published in the previous editions.

In June o f 1999, the Chair o f Orthodox Theology o f the U niversity in Białystok, in conjunction with the Brotherhood o f Saints Cyril and M ethodios organized an academ ic conference, in Białystok and at Supraśl, on the theme: „The Orthodox Church in the C om m onw ealth o f Poland” . The papers, from this conference, are published in the present edition. In future editions, we shall publish the papers o f our faculty, as well as other works written by Orthodox theologians, with the intention o f m aking the Orthodox Church known to those who would intend to com e to know it.

M ay Alm ighty God grant His abundant blessings on those w ho will w ork tow ard the publication o f „Elpis”, in the hope that this endeavor will be beneficent to many, and will be gratefully received by the reading public.

I w ould like, here, in this place, to express my m ost heartfelt and sincere gratitude to His M agnificence, Professor Adam Jam róz, R ector o f the University in Białystok, and to the High Senate o f the U niversity in Białystok, for their willingness and assistance in organizing the C hair
