Blessed Water and Chalk for Epiphany Home Blessing

The Feast of the Epiphany (January 3, 2016) is the traditional day for blessing homes and other buildings by marking the lintels of doorways with chalk. The markings commemorate the three Magi. The markings for 2016 are 20+C+M+B+16. Those letters represent the three initials of the Magi’s names written between the numbers of the year separated by four crosses.

They are also the Latin abbreviation for “Christus Mansionem Benedicat”, which means “Christ Bless this House.” Available will be blessed water and chalk at all Masses on January 3rd. You are invited to take these home with you. The prayer for you to use at home will also be provided.

The FAMILY MASS

This upcoming year, we are starting a new tradition in our parish - The FAMILY MASS.

Our first Family Mass will be on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at 12:30 pm. All are invited and kids can dress up as kings and queens (it is the Epiphany Sunday). We are going to have a Family Mass once a month and we hope you can join us! Our young parishioners are going to help as lectors, ushers, greeters and gift bearers. Anyone that would like to help during the Family Mass should contact Renata Sosin at 847-296-9051 or email: rsosin@stbmp.org.

Both the Adult and Children's Choir will be singing at the Masses. Family Mass will replace our Children’s Liturgy of the Word because the homilies will be directed to our youngsters as well.

przebrać za królów i królowe (jest to niedziela Trzech Króli).

Plenary Indulgence for the Observance of the Jubilee of Mercy Holy Year December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016

Pope Francis has granted special Indulgences to the faithful who observe and take part in the celebration of the Jubilee of Mercy. In this year, the Pope has noted, ‘‘we need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace.’’ By participating in any of the various observances of this Year, and while fulfilling the usual conditions (see below), one may gain this special Indulgence.

What must one do in order to receive the special Plenary Indulgence?

In order to gain this special Indulgence, a Catholic is required first to make sacramental Confession, re- ceive the Eucharist at Mass, make a profession of faith and offer prayers for the Supreme Pontiff's inten- tions.

In addition to and in conjunction with fulfilling these conditions, one may then take part in any of the following observances of the Jubilee of Mercy.

Each time one visits, in the course of a pilgrimage, the Cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus, or a designat- ed Jubilee Parish, and there walks through the designated Holy Door, and makes a brief visit. Parishes designated in the Archdiocese of Chicago are listed on the second page of this summary.

Those for whom, for various reasons, it will be impossible to enter the Holy Door, particularly the sick and people who are elderly and alone, e.g., confined to the home, the Holy Father noted, “For them it will be of great help to live their sickness and suffering as an experience of closeness to the Lord who in the mystery of his Passion, death and Resurrection indicates the royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness. Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial, receiving communion or attending Ho- ly Mass and community prayer, even through the various means of communication, will be for them the means of obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence.”

For those who are incarcerated, whose freedom is limited, the Jubilee Year has always constituted an op- portunity for great amnesty. They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapels of the prisons. May the ges- ture of directing their thought and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell signify for them their passage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom.

The Pope has asked the Church in this Jubilee Year to rediscover the richness encompassed by the spir- itual and corporal works of mercy. The experience of mercy, indeed, becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as Jesus himself taught us. Each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence.

Furthermore, the Jubilee Indulgence can also be obtained for the deceased. We are bound to them by the witness of faith and charity that they have left us. Thus, as we remember them in the Eucharistic celebra- tion, thus we can, in the great mystery of the Communion of Saints, pray for them, that the merciful Face of the Father free them of every remnant of fault and strongly embrace

them in the unending beatitude.

The Holy Family

Every parent knows the trials of raising children. There is the wonder of watching someone grow and learn and

discover new things. There is satisfaction as a child takes to heart the

morals and values that a parent seeks to share. There is sadness, and even grief, when some difficult problem or illness besets a son or daughter. There may even be anger or despair if, as a child grows, he or she rejects what a parent holds dear. Needless to say,

family life is complicated, never perfect, sometimes full of joy,

sometimes crowded with pain.

Today's Gospel gives a hint that the life of the Holy Family was not always the perfect example we might imagine.

Trials and struggles were a part of their life too. As the Gospel story relates today, Jesus basically skipped out on

Mary and Joseph, not an unusual practice for an adolescent. But also not

the kind of thing we would typically associate with a well-behaved teenager.

In other words, the Holy Family is exhibiting the traits and behaviors that

are part of the dynamic of ordinary family life.

And that is good! It serves as a reminder to all of us that their example is that of a family not so different from our own. On this feast the church lifts

up the Holy Family for us to imitate.

The prayer for the day asks God to help us be like them "in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity." No matter the structure of our family household, we are called to put into practice the eternal love of God, first revealed in the mystery of

the family of the Trinity, and then lived out concretely in human life in the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It is the bond of charity that holds any family together, a love that penetrates deep into our souls and abides in our hearts no matter the joys

or sorrows that life brings.

BAPTISMS

In order to prepare for their child’s Baptism, parents are asked to attend Baptismal Preparation. Sessions in Polish are held on the first Sunday of each month in Polish at 8:45 am in the Rectory. Sessions in English are by appointment. Please call the rectory at least 1 month in advance to make arrangements.

Baptism is celebrated on the 1st Sunday of the month in English.

Baptisms in Polish take place on the 2nd Sunday and the 4th Saturday

of each month—please check the availability of dates with the parish office first.

WEDDINGS

Couples preparing for marriage should make an appointment to meet with the

pastor to set their wedding date before they commit themselves to a date for a banquet hall. This appointment must be made at least six months before their wedding date.

Couples are required to participate in Marriage Preparation Sessions (PreCana), which are available either through the Archdiocese or our own

Marriage Prep program. Weddings are celebrated on Fridays and Saturdays.

There are times that St. Thomas Becket’s Parish is unaware that one of its members may be ill at home or in the hospital. If this applies to anyone in your family or circle of friends and you would like them prayed for, visited or to receive communion, please contact the Rectory.

SAKRAMENT CHRZTU ŚW.

Sakrament Chrztu Św. w jęz. polskim jest udzielany w drugą niedzielę i w czwartą sobotę

miesiąca—prosimy o wcześniejsze potwierdzenie daty z biurem parafialnym! Rodzice zobowiązani są do uczestniczenia w przygotowaniu do Sakramentu Chrztu Św: w jęz. polskim w pierwszą niedzielę miesiąca o godz. 8:45am. W okresie Wielkiego Postu Sakramentu Chrztu Świętego nie udziela się.

SAKRAMENT MAŁŻEŃSTWA

Pary proszone są o kontakt z biurem parafialnym w celu ustalenia daty ślubu i spotkania się z księdzem przynajmniej sześć miesięcy przed ślubem. PreCana - przygotowanie do Sakramentu Małżeństwa - obowiązkowe. Kurs w języku polskim w naszej parafii odbędzie się w dniu 23 styczeń, 2 kwiecień i 21 maj w 2016 r. Sakrament Małżeństwa udzielany jest w piątki i w soboty.

SAKRAMENT CHORYCH

Duszpasterstwo (polskojęzyczne) dla osób starszych i chorych. Nawiedzanie domu chorego z Komunią Św. i modlitwa.
