Household refuse is produced in big quantities. Its storage, handling and transport necessitate important equipment.
In this documentation study the actual social trends in the field of environment protection and labour and health law are described, because of their effects on the technical equipments.
Aspects of the environment policy are: the concentration of the refuse treatment plants, which stimulate the containerisation and multimodal transport; the reduction of the refuse production, which stimulate the application of differentiated tariffs ("diftar"); and the improvement of hygienic conditions {stimulating underground storage). Aspects of the labour and health laws enhance the mechanisation and automatisation of the loading systems, the standardisation of the mini-holders and the refuse collection holders, and stimulate also the use of underground storage systems.
The standardised above-ground mini-holders and collection holders are described. The advantages and disadvantages of seven different types of underground storage systems are discussed.
The refuse collection vehicles are described: the traditional rear-Ioading vehicle, but also the more recent side-Ioading and front-loading vehicles. Because of the containerisation and the labour law requirements the side-loader and the front-loader will gradually become more frequently used than the rear-loader.
The registration means and the identification means, which are necessary for the differentiated tariffs {diftar) are described for the above-ground systems, the underground systems and for the collection vehicles.
