Dear participants o f the International Conference on Fast Sea Transportation - FAST2005!

I feel honored to have an opportunity to address you on behalf o f the Institute o f Marine

Engineering, Science and Technology - an international professional body and learned society for

all marine professionals.

As the Institute promotes the importance o f keeping up to date with the latest advancements and

theories within marine engineering, marine science and marine technology, I appreciate very much

the effort o f St-Petersburg Branch o f the IMarEST in launching the 8* o f the FAST series o f

conferences which are recognized world-wide as competent forums on the cutting edge o f

technologies in high-speed craft.

It is all the more important that the venue for this conference is the city o f Saint-Petersburg - the

world's renowned scientific and industrial center famous for outstanding achievements in fast ships

and marine vehicles.

I would also like to use this opportunity to welcome you to the next major conference organised by

the IMarEST, the World Maritime Technology Conference (WMTC2006)

The World Maritime Technology Conference promotes integrated solutions to industry-wide issues

while assessing the impact on global economies now and in the future. W M T C 2006 w i l l be held at

the Queen Elizabeth I I Conference Centre in London,

from

6-10 March 2006 and w i l l draw in

leading representatives across the ftill range o f maritime disciplines for a week o f technical

presentations, ideas exchange, networking and business promotion.

During the week W M T C 2006 w i l l feature over 180 presentations covering ten technical streams in

six daily parallel sessions; an exhibition; innovation sessions and a full social programme.

Welcome to the 8th hitemational Conference on Fast Sea Transportation (FAST2005), held in

Saint-Petersburg in June 27-30, 2005.

FAST2005 is the 8th in the series o f world-renown conferences, dedicated to fast sea transportation held

previously and with success in Norway, Japan, Germany, USA, Australia, United Kingdom and Italy. It

was conceived as a representative forum for discussion o f new concepts and designs o f fast sea ships

and vehicles, as well as other issues related to fast sea transportation, such as hydrodynamics, structures,

materials, propulsion, maneuverability and safety.

The conference was organised by Saint-Petersburg Branch o f the Institute o f Marine Engineering,

Science and Technology (BIMarEST) and Saint-Petersburg Marine Technical University (SMTU),

timed at the 2nd International Maritime Defense Show and dedicated to 75th Anniversary o f SMTU.

The Conference has been sponsored by the Institute o f Marine Engineering, Science and Technology

(IMarEST, U K ) , Office o f Naval Research Global (USA), Rolls-Royce pic

(UK),

Austal Ships

(Australia), Marintek (Norway), Krylov Institute (Russia), Arctic Trade and Transport Company

It was promoted by several journals, such as "Marine Engineers Review" (IMarEST), IMarEST News

(Bulletin) and Morskoy Vestnik (Russia). The official translator o f FAST2005 has been the company

"Ego Translating"

Without support o f the aforementioned organizations and continuous attention and help o f the

International Standing Committee o f FAST Conferences (chaired by K j e l l Holden) and o f the London

Headquarters o f the Institute o f Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, the launching o f

FAST2005 would not have been possible.

The keynote papers were presented by distinguished speakers from Australia, Finland, Japan, Russia,

United Kingdom, USA and cover such topics as innovative fast naval ship design and development, the

world fast craft market, mathematical models o f high-speed water flows, wing-in-ground effect

vehicles, regulations and safety.

The participants o f FAST2005 are represented by many countries o f the world: Australia, Belgium,

China, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand,

Norway, Portugal, Serbia, Sweden, Taiwan, Ulaaine, United Kingdom and the USA.

The Proceedings o f the conference, published in a CD-ROM format, contain more than 130 papers

dedicated to many aspects associated with fast ships and marine vehicles. The CD-ROM also includes

the list o f authors and information on sponsors o f the conference.

The FAST2005 International Conference has succeeded in collecting the most renowned experts in the

field o f fast sea transportation in one o f the most beautiftil maritime capitals o f the world - Saint

Petersburg in the middle o f FASTinating White Nights.
