Acceptor number (AN) is a measure of Brønsted

acidity. It is determined from the

31

P NMR chemical shift of

a triethylphosphine oxide (tepo) probe molecule.

Complexing tepo with a Brønsted acid induces a change in the chemical shift

of the

31

P nucleus.
