J.C. van Beckhoven Classification of vessels in accordance to their relation to terminal aspects. Literature survey, Report 99.3.TT.5244, Transport Engineering and Logistics.

In this report the relations between vessels and handling equipment are studied. First vessels of the bulk carrier, container and ro-ro type are classified according to the following division:

Bulk carrier type DWT [tonnes]

Handysize 10,000 - 35,000

Handymax 35,001 - 50,000

Panamax 50,001 - 80,000

Capesize 80,000+

Container vessel type Carriage capacity [TEU]

Feeder 100 - 499 Feedermax 500 - 999 Handy 1000 - 1999 Sub-Panamax 2000 - 2999 Panamax 3000+ Post-Panamax 4000+ Malacca-max 15000 - 20000

The ro-ro type vessels are classed according to the type of vessel rather than according to their carriage capacity. A large number of ro-ro vessels will fall into two or even three of these categories.

The aspects of vessels that will mainly influence the quay and the handling equipment are the following: Length

Breadth Draught No. ofholds

Graphs have been compiled using data from standard vessels, therefore the top of the range of the different vessels are not present in these graphs. On the X-axis the carriage capacity in TEU and the DWT are used in order to be able to have an indication of the dependency according to the divisions. All major dimensional aspects have been used on the Y-axis. For ro-ro vessels only a sub-division between ro-ro vessels and PCC's has been used in regard of the graphs. This is because of the fact that most ro-ro vessels will fall into several different categories and are therefore hard to separate which would be done in order to attain a representative overview of the aspects of each group.

Because the type of cargo also plays a role in the type of handling equipment and type of vessel that is used, attention is given to the different types, namely:

Major bulk cargo Minor bulk cargo General cargo

General cargo in this division mainly consists of containers.

In order to be able to relate the data from the graphs to the handling equipment the specific types of handling equipment are also given attention. The main divisions in the type of handling equipment are the following:

Bulk handling equipment Container handling equipment Ro-ro handling equipment

to the use of bulk handling equipment where there is continuous and discontinuous handling equipment. Another aspect is the use of general cranes that will be used for a wide variety of different types of cargoes; this can vary from bulk cargo to containers and other types of general cargo.
