Approximation and Complexity, I
December 9, 2019 Each problem is worth 5 points.
1. Let
Pb4 = {v ∈ P4 : v(2) = 0}.
Find coefficients aj of the polynomial v(x) =P3j=0ajxj ∈Pb4 that best approximates the function
f (x) = x3− x2− x − 1 in the uniform norm on [−1, 1].
2. Let f ∈ C([0, 1]) and g ∈ C2π(R) be correspondingly defined as f (x) = 4x2 and g(t) = 2(1 + cos t) − sin2t.
Show that
dist(f, P2) = dist(g, V3).
3. For f ∈ C([0, 1]), let pn be the polynomial that best approximates f in the uniform norm on [0, 1] among all algebraic polynomials p ∈ Pn+1 satisfying
p(0) = f (0) and p(1) = f (1).
Show that
kf − pnk ¬ 2 dist(f, Pn+1).
4. Let xi = i/n for 0 ¬ i ¬ n. Let Vn be the linear subspace of C([0, 1]) consisting of functions that are polynomials of degree ¬ 1 on each subinterval [xi−1, xi]. Define the operator Ln : C([0, 1]) → Vn in such a way that Lnf is the element in Vn that interpolates f at the points xi; that is,
(Lnf )(xi) = f (xi) for 0 ¬ i ¬ n.
(a) Is Ln a projection onto Vn? (b) What is the norm of Ln?
(c) Does Lnf converge to f for all f ∈ C([0, 1])?
(d) If the answer to (c) is ‘yes’; can the convergence be arbitrarily slow?

Aproksymacja i złożoność, I
9 grudnia 2019 Każde zadanie warte jest 5 punktów.
1. Niech
Pb4 = {v ∈ P4 : v(2) = 0}.
Znajdź współczynniki aj wielomianu v(x) =P3j=0ajxj ∈Pb4 który najlepiej aproksy- muje funkcję
f (x) = x3− x2− x − 1 w normie jednostajnej na [−1, 1].
2. Niech f ∈ C([0, 1]) i g ∈ C2π(R) będą zdefiniowane nastepująco:
f (x) = 4x2 and g(t) = 2(1 + cos t) − sin2t.
Pokaż, że
dist(f, P2) = dist(g, V3).
3. Dla f ∈ C([0, 1]), niech pn będzie wielomianem najlepiej aproksymującym f w nor- mie jednostajnej na [0, 1] wśród wszystkich wielomianów algebraicznych p ∈ Pn+1
spełniających
p(0) = f (0) oraz p(1) = f (1).
Wykaż, że
kf − pnk ¬ 2 dist(f, Pn+1).
4. Niech xi = i/n gdzie 0 ¬ i ¬ n.
(Lnf )(xi) = f (xi) gdzie 0 ¬ i ¬ n.
(a) Czy Ln jest projekcją na Vn? (b) Ile wynosi norma Ln?
(c) Czy Lnf zbiega do f dla wszystkich f ∈ C([0, 1])?
(d) Jeśli odpowiedź na pytanie (c) wynosi ‘tak’ to czy zbieżność może być dowolnie wolna?
