NA CZTERDZIESTOLECIE OŚRODKA DOKUMENTACJI ZABYTKÓW
A utor słów m otta, znakom ity historyk sztuki, pisał:
„Działanie w inno zm ierzać do osiągnięcia zakreślonych sobie celów, do przekształcania istniejącego stanu rze czy i u rzeczyw istn ien ia stanu rzeczy uznanego za cen nie jszy ” (podkreślenie — K. G.). Jego artykuł w yw ołał
wówczas dyskusję w naszym środow isku. Wszak k o n serw atorstw o jest także poznaw aniem , gdyż w trakcie szeroko pojętych działań konserw atorskich rozszerza my naszą w iedzę o badanym podm iocie, niezależnie od tego, czy badaczem jest historyk sztuki, historyk architektury, konserw ator czy też archeolog. N iew ąt pliwie jednak Jan Białostocki w pierwszym zdaniu swego eseju miał rację — konserw atorstw o jest działa niem , aktyw nym działaniem . Jednym z przejaw ów tej aktyw ności jest dokum entacja zabytków.
Z arządzenie pow ołujące do życia O środek D o k u mentacji Z abytków zaczyna się następująco: „W celu
usprawnienia inw entaryzacji za b y tk ó w dla racjonalne go planow ania ich odbudow y i konserwacji zarządza się, co następuje: § 1. Tworzy się z dniem 1 stycznia 1962 r. »Ośrodek D oku m en ta cji Z a b ytkó w « , zw a n y dalej O środkiem . § 2. D o zadań O środka należy prze prow adzenie centralnego rejestru, ew idencji i d o k u m entacji pom ocniczej za b y tk ó w nieruchom ych i ru chom ych2.” Dziś m oże budzić sprzeciw słow o „odbu d o w a ”, ale wówczas jeszcze świeże były ślady w ojen
nych zniszczeń. O kreślone lapidarnie w zarządzeniu M inistra zadania były ogrom ne. Ich realizację i d o ro bek O środka przedstaw iano już przy okazji dw óch jubileuszy: 10-lecia i 2 5 -lecia — rów nież na łam ach „O chrony Z ab y tk ó w ”3. Przez czterdzieści lat te zada nia ulegały pewnym przekształceniom, ale przede wszyst kim zostały znacznie rozszerzone. N a obraz działalno ści O środka składa się zasadniczo doro b ek jego dzia łów i to ich pracę prezentują szeroko dalsze artykuły. Niniejszy tekst pełni rolę sw oistego w prow adzenia.

W idniejące w nazwie naszej instytucji słow o „doku
m entacja” to w edług Słow nika języka polskiego: „zbiór d o k u m e n tó w uzasadniających coś, m ateriały źródło we, d o w o d y ”. I dalej: „dokum entacja naukow a: gro m adzenie, opracow yw anie i rozpow szechnianie w ybra nych w iadom ości (...) w celu ich praktycznego zastoso w a n ia ”4. Czem u ma służyć zbiór dokum entacji, jakimi
są setki tysięcy kart ewidencyjnych zgrom adzonych, opracow yw anych i nadal zbieranych w O D Z ? Komu służy dział archiw um , setki fachow ych publikacji w y danych przez O D Z oraz wyspecjalizow ana biblioteka?
O środek jest podstaw ow ym , m erytorycznym zaple czem M inistra K ultury — G eneralnego K onserw atora Z abytków oraz konserw ato ró w w ojew ódzkich. Z w ła szcza od czasu, gdy w ram ach reorganizacji tych służb w 1991 r. uległy likwidacji w ojew ódzkie Biura D o k u m entacji Zabytków . Stw orzona i koord y n o w an a przez O D Z w ielopostaciow a dokum entacja to podstaw a roz poznania dziedzictw a kulturow ego w kraju. To m ate riał, od którego zaczyna form ułow anie swej opinii kon serw ato r decydujący o w pisie do rejestru zabytków (albo o skreśleniu obiektu lub przedm iotu z rejestru). O d tego m ateriału zaczyna pracę historyk badający dw ory szlacheckie czy zabytkow e organy w kościo łach. A utorzy Katalogu za b y tk ó w sztu ki w Polsce, w y daw anego przez Polską A kadem ię N auk — prace nad każdym kolejnym tom em katalogu rozpoczynają od rozpoznania w naszych kartotekach. Ta dokum entacja nie jest zam kniętym , archiw alnym zespołem . Tak jak krajobraz kulturow y nie jest zam kniętym rezerw atem . Jest wciąż uzupełniana, uaktualniana. W ciągu ostat nich kilkudziesięciu lat zm ieniała się m etodyka k o n ser w atorska, zm ieniało się podejście do w ielu grup zabyt ków i wraz z tym zm ieniały się, a raczej rozszerzały

zadania O środka. Jego trzon stanow ią trzy głów ne działy badawcze: A rchitektury i Urbanistyki, Sztuki i Rzem iosła A rtystycznego (dawniej — Z abytków Ru chom ych) oraz Archeologii. Bez nich nie byłoby dzi siejszej wiedzy o dziedzictw ie kulturow ym w Polsce. Ich prezentacja zam ieszczona dalej mówi sama za sie bie. Lecz O D Z to także kilka innych, istotnych dzia łów, o których należy rów nież k ró tk o w spom nieć.
M uzealnictw o jest działem , który zajmuje się g ro m adzeniem , opracow aniem oraz udostępnianiem w ie dzy o polskich muzeach. Ewidencja muzeów, infor macje o ich zbiorach, działalności naukow ej, w ysta w ienniczej i wydawniczej jest system atycznie aktuali zow ana i publikow ana co jakiś czas w form ie synte tycznego przew odnika po polskich m uzeach. Ponadto dział wydaje periodyk „M uzealnictw o” prezentujący m ateriały inform acyjne, historyczne i badaw cze zwią zane z m uzeami.
Dział A rchiw aliów i Z b io ró w N aukow ych posiada zespoły o różnej prew eniencji, m .in. spuścizny bada czy, zawierające m ateriały dotyczące problem atyki hi
storycznej i konserw atorskiej wielu zabytków. To m.in. Teki Łopacińskiego, Teki Glinki i Teki Ciołka. Będąca częścią działu Fototeka to unikatow y zasób negatyw ów i odbitek pozytyw ow ych, w ielokroć odnoszących się do nieistniejących już zabytków. W dziale tym bardzo wcześnie zainicjow ano — przy w spółpracy Działu Wy daw nictw — wydaw anie m ateriałów źródłow ych prze chow yw anych w zasobach muzeów, bibliotek i archi wów, a niezbędnych przy pracach badawczych histo ryków sztuki i konserw atorów . To katalogi archiw al nych rysunków architektonicznych, planów i pom ia rów (głównie X V III- i X IX -w iecznych), czy też p ro jektów znanych w przeszłości i do dziś cenionych a r chitektów. Badacze cenią sobie nadzwyczaj tych kilka naście tom ów — bez nich prace studialne byłyby nie zwykle u trudnione. W m om encie publikacji w latach siedem dziesiątych i osiem dziesiątych poziom m eryto ryczny i edytorski katalogów stawiał je na rów ni z ów czesnymi analogicznym i w ydaw nictw am i zachodnio europejskim i. Już wówczas nie ustępow aliśm y czołów ce Europy.

W zarządzeniu M inistra pow ołującym O środek był zapis o prow adzeniu specjalistycznych wydawnictw. O d czterdziestu lat Dział W ydaw nictw systematycznie wydaje kilka periodyków i serii wydawniczych. Ogrom tych prac obrazują trzy tom y bibliografii pt. W ydaw
nictw a Ośrodka D okum entacji Z a b y tk ó w w Warsza wie (za lata 1 9 6 2 -1 9 7 5 , 1 9 7 6 -1 9 8 4 , 1 9 8 4 -1 9 9 4 ) za
wierające p onad 6400 pozycji bibliograficznych! Ale nie tylko liczba publikacji im ponuje. W dorobku Dzia łu jest kilka serii i kilkanaście książek, bez których w arsztat pracy historyka sztuki i konserw atora nie m o że się obejść. Ponad setka tom ów cieszącej się wielką renom ą Biblioteki M uzealnictw a i O chrony Z abytków (BM iO Z), ukazującej się w seriach А, В i C, prezentuje zróżnicow aną tem atykę. O d kom pendium przepisów praw nych dotyczących ochrony dziedzictw a k u ltu ro wego, poprzez m ateriały z konferencji kon serw ato r skich, po cykl słow ników term inologicznych, np. zło- tnictw a, tkanin i architektury obronnej, czy też „Infor m ator A rcheologiczny”. To także specjalistyczne publi kacje dotyczące technologicznych zagadnień konser
wacji zabytków m alarstw a, kam ienia i m etalu, skóry, papieru i tkanin — unikatow e nie tylko w skali kraju.
Biblioteka istniejąca od początku, od 1962 r., liczy obecnie ponad 60 000 w olum inów — książek i czaso pism. Profil zbiorów, początkow o bliższy historii sztuki i m uzealnictw u, z czasem uległ specjalistycznej e w o lu cji. O becnie jest jedyną w Polsce placów ką mającą księ gozbiór poświęcony zagadnieniom inwentaryzacji i d o kum entacji zabytków, a także problem atyce kon serw a torskiej, zarów no w zakresie teoretycznym , jak i p ra k tycznym. D rogą zakupów oraz w ym iany m iędzynaro dowej biblioteka posiada wiele zagranicznych, specja listycznych periodyków (stale w spółpracuje z 80 k ra jowymi i zagranicznym i instytucjam i). Z akupy aukcyj ne pozw alają na uzupełnianie zbiorów o cenne, h isto ryczne publikacje, niezbędne przy pracach s tu d ia ln o - -k o n serw ato rsk ich . O sobny rozdział w dziejach O środka to pow ołanie w latach 1 9 9 1 -1 9 9 2 dw unastu oddziałów terenow ych — Regionalnych O środków Studiów i O chrony Śro dow iska K ulturow ego — zgodnie z now ym statutem O D Z zatwierdzonym przez M inisterstwo Kultury i Sztu ki w 1990 r. Ich utw orzenie było jednym z głównych elem entów przeprow adzonej wówczas reorganizacji służby konserw atorskiej. Powstanie tych filii w histo rycznych krainach Rzeczypospolitej w yprzedziło p o dział adm inistracyjny kraju z 1998 r. — istnieją one praw ie w e wszystkich obecnych w ojew ództw ach. Po wstanie Regionalnych O środków m iało być swoistą rekom pensatą likwidacji Biur Dokumentacji Zabytków, ale jednocześnie podstaw iono przed nimi zadania znacznie am bitniejsze. Badania środow iska kultu ro w e go miały być prow adzone na wyższym poziom ie i m ia ły usystem atyzow ać wiedzę na jego tem at, d o p ro w a dzając z czasem do pow stanie pełnej syntezy wiedzy 0 krajobrazie kulturow ym kraju. O środki Regionalne w spółpracują z urzędam i konserw atorskim i oraz tere now ą adm inistracją rządow ą lub sam orządow ą m.in. przy tw orzeniu opinii i wytycznych konserw atorskich,' a także wykonują opracow ania studialne na tem at dzie dzictwa kulturow ego. Ich praca w ypełniła lukę, jaka pow stała po likwidacji Biur D okum entacji Z abytków 1 rozw iązaniu wielu placów ek Przedsiębiorstw a Pań stwowego Pracownie Konserwacji Zabytków (PP PKZ). Po tym drugim przedsiębiorstw ie, które praktycznie przestało istnieć na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych
przejęły w użytkow anie ich obszerne, w artościow e ar chiw a dokum entacji, studiów i opracow ań badaw czych i są obecnie ich opiekunam i.
D ziałalność O D Z nie byłaby m ożliw a bez bliskiej w spółpracy z w ojew ódzkim i konserw atoram i zabyt ków. Wszak nikt tak dobrze nie zna bieżących potrzeb w terenie i to oni przenoszą tam program d o k u m en ta cji dziedzictw a kulturow ego. Przez lata O środek jed nak pom agał (i nadal pow inien pom agać !) w spółtw o rzyć i koordynow ać program y badaw cze oraz d o k u m entacyjne, które w znacznym stopniu także finanso wał. Dzięki tem u istnieją dobrze opracow ane ew iden cje np. zabytkow ego budow nictw a wiejskiego czy in strum entów muzycznych, a A rcheologiczne Zdjęcie Polski jest tak dalece zaaw ansow ane. O środek pom agał w przygotowaniu pracow ników wojewódzkich Biur D o kum entacji Z abytków (BDZ) — dziś już nieistniejących — w w ykonyw aniu niełatwej dokum entacji. W tym celu organizow ano konferencje naukow e i szkolenia, a także obozy naukow e dla pracow ników służby k o n serwatorskiej oraz studentów. W arto pamiętać, że utw o rzoną w 1991 r. Państw ow ą Służbę O chrony Z ab y t ków zasilili pracow nicy rozw iązanych BDZ, którzy stanow ią obecnie trzon kadry służby konserw atorskiej.
Przygotow anie i realizacja różnych zadań nie byłaby m ożliw a bez w spółpracy z naukow cam i, ze środow is kiem akadem ickim . O środek inicjow ał i organizow ał wiele interdyscyplinarnych sesji naukow ych pośw ięco nych m etodyce badawczej, a w szczególności p o trze bom konserw atorskim . K ooperow ano w tym zakresie także z PP PKZ. Pokłosiem tych sesji były z reguły publikacje zam ieszczone we w spom nianej Bibliotece M uzeów i O chrony Zabytków .
W okresie czterech dziesięcioleci O D Z przeszedł znaczną przem ianę. Zaczynał od zatrudnienia ośmiu osób pracujących w kilku pokojach w Pałacu Prym a-, sowskim przy ul. Senatorskiej. Potem , od 1970 r., była specjalnie odbudow ana dla jego potrzeb kam ieniczka przy ul. Brzozowej 35, która do dziś jest symbolem naszej instytucji, m ocno zakorzenionym w św iadom o ści środow iska konserw atorskiego w Polsce. Szybko rozwijająca się praca dokum entacyjna, zwiększające się zadania O środka spow odow ały, że już pod koniec lat siedem dziesiątych XX w. zaczęło tam być ciasno. Pod koniec lat osiem dziesiątych pracow ało tam praw ie czterdzieści osób — dziś naw et tru d n o sobie w yobra zić, w jakich w arunkach to się odbyw ało. Przez wiele lat dyrektor, prof. Wojciech K alinow ski, czynił starania 0 otrzym anie większej siedziby. Pewnym rozw iązaniem m iało być przekazanie w 1979 r. zdew astow anego, za bytkow ego dw orca kolei w arszaw sko-w iedeńskiej w G rodzisku M azow ieckim , który jeszcze w XIX w. przestał pełnić swą funkcję. M iał on być docelow o magazynem tych zbiorów, które były rzadko w ykorzy styw ane, co przy czynnej działalności instytucji było 1 tak problem atyczną propozycją. Jego rem o n t jednak ciągnął się bardzo długo. W lutym 1991 r., po w ielo
letnich staraniach, dzięki pom ocy ów czesnego M in i stra Kultury i Sztuki — Izabelli Cywińskiej i G eneral nego K onserw atora Z abytków — Tadeusza Z ielnie wicza, now y d yrektor O D Z , M arek K onopka, mógł święcić przeniesienie większości działów pękającego w szwach O środka do nowej siedziby — w Alejach Ujazdowskich 6. Działy M uzealnictw a oraz W ydaw nictw pozostały przy ul. M azow ieckiej. W w y rem o n tow anym budynku dw orca w G rodzisku M azow iec kim znalazło później schronienie olbrzym ie archiw um kilku w arszawskich oddziałów PP PKZ. Często zaglą dają do niego badacze z całego kraju.
Ranga O środka w ynika z jego zadań. Zostały one niezwykle trafnie określone u jego zarania. N atom iast za ich realizację są odpow iedzialni dyrektorzy. N ie m ożna tu pom inąć choćby tych, którzy już odeszli na zawsze. Twórcą tej instytucji był prof, dr Kazimierz M alinow ski (dyrektor O D Z w latach 1 9 6 2 -1 9 6 6 ), ówczesny d yrektor Z arządu M uzeów i O chrony Z a bytków w M inisterstw ie K ultury i Sztuki. Był w spół autorem ustawy o ochronie d ó b r kultury z 1962 r. O n określił strukturę i zadania O D Z i był jego pierwszym dyrektorem do 1966 r. Zręby przez niego zbudow ane stanow iły podstaw ę pracy dokum entacyjnej w polskim konserw atorstw ie. Był inicjatorem i organizatorem pionierskich konferencji pośw ięconych technologicz nym zagadnieniom konserw acji dzieł sztuki, czym d o prow adził do zbliżenia trzech akadem ickich ośrodków konserw atorskich: krakow skiego, toruńskiego i w ar szawskiego. Jego osoba jest niesłusznie zapom niana przez polskich konserw atorów . Później przez kilka lat kontynuow ała jego program i w spółtw orzyła nowy dyrektor M aria C harytańska (dyrektor O D Z w latach 1 9 6 6 -1 9 7 4 ). M iędzy innym i w tedy rozpoczęto fo to graficzną dokum entację lotniczą zabytkow ych m iast i grom adzenie zbioru m onografii m iast polskich. W te dy rów nież przystąpiono do przygotow ania k o m p u te ryzacji zbiorów Działu Z abytków Ruchom ych. Jej za sługą była odbudow a kam ieniczki przy ul. Brzozowej na siedzibę instytucji. W 1978 r. pow ołano Dział A rcheologii. W latach 19 9 0 -1 9 9 5 dyrektorem był M arek K onopka. Po nim ,
do początku 2001 r. szefował naszej instytucji dr arch. R obert Kunkel, a od 2001 r. dyrektorem jest M ichał U rbanow ski. N ie sposób przyw ołać tu w szystkich ini cjatyw i działań dyrektorów . Ale te osiągnięcia O śro d ka nie byłyby możliwe bez w spółpracy zatrudnionych tu ludzi. O ni stanow ią tę nieliczną, ale liczącą się armię w spółtw orzącą w izerunek instytucji. Przew inęło się ich przez te dziesięciolecia wielu. N iektórzy z nich to dziś pow szechnie znane w środow isku autorytety.

Publikacja pośw ięcona jubileuszowi O D Z miała m ieć pierw otnie inną form ę. W iosną ubiegłego roku, kiedy pow stał pom ysł uczczenia czterdziestolecia O środka, zaplanow ano m .in. w ydanie specjalnej księgi pam iątkow ej. Jednak sytuacja ekonom iczna u niem oż liwiła publikację w takiej form ie, jaką zaplanow ano. Z rezygnow ano więc z syntetycznej historii czterdzie stu lat instytucji. O dpadły „nieurzędow e” dzieje O D Z , jego ludzi, w ydarzeń anegdotycznych czy też p o p u la r nych kiedyś objazdów naukow ych. Pozostało om ów ie nie doro b k u działów, które śladem poprzednich jubi leuszy zostaje przedstaw ione w łaśnie na łam ach „O c h ro n y Z abytków ” .
W ciągu ostatnich dw unastu lat w naszym kraju n a stąpiły wielkie, historyczne zmiany, które w płynęły także na kondycję O środka D okum entacji Zabytków . W ydarzenia polityczne i społeczne — lepsze i gorsze — niem al bezpośrednio przekładają się na sytuację naszej instytucji. W środow isku konserw atorskim d o chodzi do głosu pokolenie, dla którego zabytki i dzie dzictwo kulturow e nie zawsze muszą oznaczać to samo, co znaczyły dziesięć lat tem u czy ćwierć w ieku tem u dla nas. Paradoksalnie, w yzw olenie z systemu to ta lita r nego nie przyniosło takich liczących się przem ian w przedm iocie naszej pracy — w ochronie dziedzictw a — o jakich marzyliśmy przed 1989 r. At the tim e, his article p ro d u ced a lively discussion am ong conservators. After all, conservation also de notes cognition, since in the course of w idely co m p re hended conservation undertakings we expand our know ledge about the exam ined subject regardless w hether the researcher is a historian of art, a historian of archi tecture, a conservator or an archeologist. Indubitably, Jan Białostocki was correct in m aintaining th at the art of conservation is an activity, one of w hose sym ptom s is the d ocum entation of historical m onum ents.
The ruling w hich established the C entre for the D ocum entation of H istorical M onum ents (O D Z) be gins w ith the declaration: “In order to render the in
ventories o f historical m o n u m e n ts more efficient for a rational plan o f their reconstruction and conservation, the follow ing is ordained: §1. The ‘Centre for the D o cum entation o f H istorical D o cu m en ts’, kn o w n as the Centre, has been established on 1 January 1962. §2. In the course of forty years, those tasks u n d erw en t certain transform ations, predom inantly involving th eir considerable expansion. T he image of the activity p u r sued by the Centre is com posed basically of the achieve m ents of its departm ents, w hose w ork is discussed in m ore detail in fu rth er articles. T he d o cu m en tatio n created and co o rd in ated by the C entre com prises a foundation for identifying national cultural legacy. This is the m aterial w hich assists every conservator in form ulating his ow n op in io n w hile deciding to include a certain object in to the register (or to delete it). This is also the m aterial w hich serves a historian em barking on re search in to gentry m anor houses or old organs in Polish churches. T he authors of Katalog za b y tk ó w sztu ki

issued by the Polish Academy of Sciences, start their w ork on each consecutive volum e w ith becom ing ac q uainted w ith ou r files. Ju st as the cultural landscape is n o t an enclosed reservation, d o cu m en tatio n is by no m eans a closed archival com plex but rem ains supple m ented and b rought up to date. C onservation m ethods have changed in the course of several past decades as has the appro ach to num erous groups of historical m o num ents; hence the transform ation and expansion of the C e n tre ’s tasks. T he core of the C entre is co m posed o f three prim e research departm ents: A rchitec ture and Town Planning, A rt and Crafts (form erly — M obile Historical M onum ents) and Archaeology. W ith out them our p resen t-d a y know ledge about cultural legacy in Poland simply could not exist. Their presenta tion speaks for itself. T he C entre contains also several o th er essential departm ents which deserve to be briefly m entioned.
T he D ep artm en t of M useum Studies gathers, p re pares and renders available know ledge about Polish m useum s. M useum registers, inform ation about col lections, as well as scientific, exhibition and publica tio n activity are system atically b ro u g h t up to date and published in the form of a synthetic guide to Polish m useum s. T he D epartm ent also issues the periodical “M uzealn ictw o ”, w hich presents data and historical and research m aterial associated w ith m useums.
T he D ep artm en t of Archival M aterial and Scientific C ollections possesses sets of assorted origin, i. a. the legacies o f various researchers, such as the Łopaciński Folios, th e G linka Folios, and the C iołek Folios, w ith m aterial pertaining to the historical and conservation aspect of num erous m onum ents. T he P hotographic C ollection, w hich is p art of the D epartm ent, consti tutes a unique resource of negatives and positive c o p ies, m any of w hich refer to n o n -e x ta n t m onum ents.

C o -o p e ra tio n w ith the D epartm ent of Publications initiated the publication of source m aterial found in m useum s, libraries and archives, indispensable for re search conducted by historians of art and conservators — archival catalogues of architectural draw ings, plans and m easurem ents (m ainly e ig h te e n th - and nine teen th -cen tu ry ) or projects by architects celebrated in the past and esteem ed up to this day. Researchers attach great im portance to those volum es, w ith o u t w hich their w ork w ould be greatly ham pered. At the tim e of their publication during the 1970s and 1980s, the scientific and editorial assets of the catalogues placed them at a level equal to th a t of analogous West E uro pean w orks. Already at th a t tim e, we w ere on par w ith the leading representatives of Europe.
T he m inisterial ruling w hich established the C entre included an entry about specialist publications. For forty years, the D epartm ent of Publications system ati cally issues several periodicals and series. T he scale of this undertaking is illustrated by the three volum es of a bibliography entitled: W ydaw nictw a Ośrodka D o k u

1984 and 1 9 8 4 -1 9 9 4 ) containing m ore than 6 400 bibliographical items! N o t only the num ber of the publications is impressive. T he overall accom plish m ents of the D ep artm en t include several series and up to tw enty books simply indispensable for the w orkshop of the historian of art and the conservator. M ore than a h u n d red volum es of the renow ned Library of M u seum Studies and the P rotection of H istorical M o n u m ents (BM iOZ) appeared in series A, В and C, em bracing diverse topics — from a com pendium of legal regulations concerning the p ro tectio n of cultural leg acy and m aterial from conservation conferences, to a series of term inological dictionaries, for exam ple, on goldsm ithery, fabrics and defensive architecture, or “Inform ator Archeologiczny”. The output includes also publications about the technological aspects of the conservation of m onum ents of painting, stone, m etal, leather, paper and fabrics — a venture unique n o t only on a dom estic scale.
At present, the Library, w hich accom panies the C en tre from its very beginning, i. e. from 1962, is com posed of m ore than 60 000 volum es of books and periodicals. In tim e, the profile of the collections, originally m ore valuable for an historian of art and a researcher interested in m useum studies, evolved to w ards specialisation. Today, the C entre is the only Polish institution w ith a book collection on the inven tories and d ocum entation of historical m onum ents as well as a wide gam ut of conservation problem s, both

theoretical and practical. Acquisitions and international exchange enabled the Library, w hich constantly c o - o p erates w ith 80 Polish and foreign institutions, to pos sess m any foreign specialist periodicals. A uction p u r chases m ake it possible to supplem ent the collections w ith valuable historical publications required for con servation w ork and studies. A database of the book collection is being created in M ikro CDS ISIS since 1993, and includes a particularly valuable base of articles from about sixty Polish periodicals.
T he conservation activity pursued by the C entre encom passes the organisation of various conferences and courses in ten t on training w orkers of C onserva tion Offices and Bureaus for the D ocum entation of H istorical M onum ents about the p ro p er execution and conducting of registers. O th er tasks include num erous conservation opinions prepared by the Team of Ex perts on A rchitecture, Town Planning and the C ultural Landscape (part of O D Z since 1993) for the G eneral Conservator of Historical M onum ents and voivodeship conservators.
A separate chapter in the history of the C entre was the establishm ent in 1 9 9 1 -1 9 9 2 of twelve regional departm ents — Regional C entres for Studies and the P rotection of the C ultural E nvironm ent — in accord ance w ith a new O D Z statute confirm ed by the M inistry of C ulture and Art in 1990. T heir creation was one of the prim e elem ents of the reorganisation of conserva tion services conducted at the tim e. T he fo undation of those branches, located in the historical regions of the country, preceded the adm inistrative division of Po land, carried out in 1998; today, they exist in alm ost all voivodeships. T he appearance of the Regional C en tres was envisaged as a sui generis com pensation for the liquidation of the Bureaus for the D ocum entation of H istorical M onum ents; at the same tim e, the C en tres w ere entrusted w ith m uch m ore am bitious tasks. The exam ination of the cultural environm ent was to be conducted on a higher level and render know ledge m ore system atic; w ith tim e, it was to generate a com plete synthesis of know ledge about the Polish cultural landscape. Regional C entres c o -o p e ra te w ith conser vation offices and the local governm ent or self-gov ernm ent adm inistration, i. a. w hile preparing conser vation directives and opinions as well as studies co n cerning cultural heritage, thus filling the gap w hich em erged after the closure of the Bureaus for the D ocu m entation of H istorical M onum ents and the dissolu tion of num erous outposts of the State Enterprise Ateliers for the C onservation of H istorical M onum ents (PP PKZ). The C entres inherited copious and valuable archives of the d o cu m entation, studies and research conducted by the E nterprise, w hich, for all practical purposes, ceased existing at the beginning of the 1990s; today, they are the lawful guardians of the collections.
T he activity of the C entre for the D ocum entation of H istorical M on u m en ts w ould be im possible w ith o u t
close c o -o p e ra tio n w ith voivodeship conservators of historical m onum ents, best acquainted w ith cu rren t requirem ents and engaged in adapting the program m e of the docu m en tatio n of cultural legacy to local c o n ditions. For years, the C entre assisted (and should continue doing so!) in c o -creatin g and coordinating research and docu m en tatio n program m es w hich, to a considerable degree, it also finances. These efforts m ade it possible to produce w e ll-p rep ared registers of, for exam ple, historical rural architecture or musical instrum ents, and fu rth ered the progress achieved by the Archeological P hotograph of Poland. T he C entre also helped to train the personnel of voivodeship Bu reaus for the D ocum entation of H istorical M on u m en ts — today n o n -e x iste n t — for the p rep aratio n of fre quently challenging d ocum entation. For this purpose, the C entre organised scientific conferences and tra in ing courses as well as excursions intended for students and em ployees of conservation services. It is w o rth rem em bering th a t the State Service for the Protection of H istorical M o num ents, created in 1991, was staffed by the em ployees of the dissolved Bureaus, w ho today com prise the basic core of conservation services.
T he p rep aratio n and realisation of various tasks could n o t have been accom plished w ith o u t the collabo ratio n of scholars and academ ic environm ents. T he C entre initiated and organised num erous interdiscipli nary scientific sessions devoted to research m ethods, and in particular to conservation requirem ents. Such c o -o p e ra tio n involved also PP PKZ. T he outcom e of those sessions included, as a rule, publications issued in the above m entioned Library of M useum Studies and the P rotection of H istorical M onum ents.
For the past four decades O D Z experienced consid erable transform ations. It began as the em ployer of eight staff m em bers w orking in the Prim ate’s Palace in Senatorska Street. In 1970, a house in 35 Brzozowa Street was specially reconstructed for its purposes; today, it rem ains a symbol of our institution, strongly en ro o ted in the consciousness of Polish conservators. Rapidly growing docum entation tasks and the increased efforts of the C entre were the reason why already at the end of the 1970s the existing offices proved to be cram ped. At the end of the 1980s they were used by alm ost thirty persons, and the conditions in w hich the latter w ere com pelled to w ork appear to be inconceiv able. For m any years, D irector Prof. Wojciech Kali now ski endeavoured to obtain m ore spacious facilities. A solution of sorts was the ad ap tatio n in 1979 of a devastated railway station of the W arsaw -V ienna line in G rodzisk M azow iecki. T he building, w hich already during the n ineteenth century no longer fulfilled its original function, was to act as a storehouse for the m ore rarely used collections, a suggestion w hich ap peared to be controversial considering the w ork p e r form ed by the institution. T he repair of the railway station proved to be extrem ely tim e-consum ing. In
February 1991, M arek K onopka, the new D irector of O D Z , finally transferred the m ajority of the D ep art m ents to a new seat in 6 Ujazdowskie Avenue, thanks to th e su p p o rt of Izabella Cyw ińska, the M inister of C u ltu re and A rt, and Tadeusz Zielniew icz, the G eneral C onservator of H istorical M onum ents. T he D ep art m ents of M useum Studies and Publications rem ained in M azow iecka Street. Subsequently, the repaired rail way station in G rodzisk M azow iecki becam e a refuge for th e enorm ous archive of several W arsaw d e p a rt m ents of PP PKZ, frequently used by researchers from the w hole country.
T he rank of the C entre stems from tasks extrem ely aptly defined at its very outset; their realisation, h o w ever, is entru sted to consecutive directors. T he creator of th e institution was Professor Dr. Kazimierz M ali now ski (O D Z D irector in 1 9 6 2 -1 9 6 6 ), the th en D i recto r of the Board of M useum s and the P rotection of H istorical M o n u m en ts in the M inistry of C ulture and A rt and the c o -a u th o r of the statute ab o u t the p ro te c tion of cultural p ro p erty (1962). Prof. M alinow ski, w hose person has been undeservedly forgotten by Pol ish conservators, outlined the structure and tasks of C en tre, and the fram ew ork constructed by him co n stitu ted the basis of d o cu m en tatio n in Polish conser vation. H e was also the initiator and organiser of p ioneering conferences on the technological aspects of the conservation of art w orks, and co n trib u ted to a ra p p ro ch em en t betw een three academ ic conservation centres: Kraków, W arsaw and Toruń. Subsequently, for several years, Prof. M alinow ski’s program m e was co n tin u ed by D irector M aria C harytańska, w ho also d e vised its new version (head of O D Z in 1 9 6 6 -1 9 7 4 ). This period witnessed the inauguration of photographic aerial d o cu m en tatio n of old tow ns and the am assm ent of a collection of m onographic studies dealing w ith Polish cities. F urtherm ore, the C entre em barked upon a co m p u ter version of the collections of the D ep art m en t of M obile H istorical M onum ents. T he achieve m ents of D irector C harytańska included the reco n stru ctio n of the house in Brzozowa Street for the main seat o f the institution. Prof. Dr. W ojciech Kalinowski, engineer and architect (O D Z D irector in 1 9 7 5 -1 9 8 9 ) sym bolised fu rth er intensive developm ent: the initia tio n of the fundam ental program m e of registering arch itectu ral m onum ents, expanded by including buildings from the second half of the nineteenth cen tury and the tw en tieth century, and the in tro d u ctio n o f a new, m ore extensive index card. T he D epartm ent o f M obile M o n u m en ts initiated specialist docu m en ta tio n of church organs, musical instrum ents and goldsm ithery; at the sam e tim e, it continued the p io neering program m e of creating a co m p u ter database for th e index card collection. T he D ep artm en t of A r chaeology was established in 1978. In 1 9 9 0 -1 9 9 5 , the p ost o f D irector was held by M arek K onopka, fol low ed by Dr. R obert Kunkel, an architect (to the
beginning of 2001) and M ichał U rbanow ski (since 2001). It is simply impossible to m ention here all the initiatives and activities of the particular directors. T he attainm ents of the C entre w ould have been impossible w ith o u t the co -o p e ra tio n of its em ployees, w ho co m prise a small but significant group of people co-creat- ing the C en tre’s overall image. T h ro u g h o u t the past decades the staff included authorities w ho rem ain u n i versally recognised up to this very day.
Forty years of the C entre for the D ocum entation of H istorical M on u m en ts have yielded an enorm ous o u t put, w hich we shall present in g reater detail in a further p art of this publication. I started my tex t by citing Prof. Jan B ialostocki’s view about „activity aim ing at
the realisation o f a state o f things recognised as more valuable” (ars auro gem m isque prior)-, in o u r case, such
activity denotes the expansion of knowledge about cul tural legacy in Poland. I believe th a t today it w ould be possible to convince Prof. Białostocki th a t conserva tio n also denotes cognition, to a considerable degree achieved ow ing to the d o cum entation of historical m onum ents.

Originally, the publication m arking the jubilee of the C entre for the D ocum entation of H istorical M o n u m ents was to be presented in a different form . In the spring of last year, we planned to issue a special com m em orative book to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the C entre. N onetheless, the econom ic situation m ade it im possible to finance such a publication, and a synthetic history of the four decades of ou r institu tion could n o t appear. This m eans th at an “unofficial” history of the C entre and its w orkers, brim m ing w ith anecdotes and descriptions of the once popular scien tific excursions had to be om itted; we w ere left w ith a presentation of the accom plishm ents of particular departm ents w hich, as in the case of previous jubilees, shall be discussed in “ O ch ro n a Z ab y tk ó w ”.
In the course of the last twelve years, our country has experienced great historical changes w hich exerted an im pact also on the condition of the C entre for the D ocu m en tatio n of H istorical M onum ents. Political and social events — be they better or w orse — alm ost always directly affect o u r institution. Today, conserva tors are witnessing the influx of a generation w hose m em bers do n o t always ascribe the same significance to historical m onum ents and cultural legacy as we did some ten or tw enty five years ago. Paradoxically, lib eration from a totalitarian system did n o t bring about transform ations of the pro tectio n of cultural legacy as p ro m in en t as those for w hich we longed p rior to 1989. This is the reason w hy it is necessary to recount our achievem ents, b oth the ones dating from the difficult years of the past, and those originating from p re sen t-d ay reality.
