Preface

The aim o f PRADS is to exchange Icnowledge in fundamental and practical design techniques on ships and mobile offshore structures. Ever since its birth in Tokyo in 1977, the goal o f PRADS has been achieved through the active participations to the Symposia held around the world during the last thirty six years. Five symposia including this PRADS 2013 were held in Asia, five in Europe and two in America. The numbers of hosting countries are really well-balanced between continents.

The globalization o f the world economy demands the various types o f ships for ocean transportation. Also the environmental regulations for greenliouse gas emission and the shortage of fuel oils are driving forces for the creation o f energy-saving devices and the advancement o f offshore technologies. The main theme o f this PRADS is Present and Future of Shipbuilding Technology.' Scientists and engineers, active in the fields o f ships and other floating structures, participate in this PRADS 2013 f o r the exchange o f the new knowledge for today and tomorrow.

The proceedings contain the papers presented in the 12th International Symposium on Practical Design o f Ships and Other Floating Structures (PRADS 2013) held at CECO, Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province, Korea, on 20th - 25th October, 2013. From 240 abstracts submitted, the Papers Committee selected 162 papers from 24 countries for presentation. The papers range from fimdamental to practical aspects, in the fields o f hull form design and optimization, production, environmental loads and stability, marine safety, structural design and fatigue assessment, noise and vibration, rules and regulation, energy saving devices, renewable energy, and L N G and CCS.

On behalf o f the Standing Committee o f PRADS and the local organizers we thank the authors for their contributions by these proceedings and the participants for their interests and valuable contributions in the discussion. We also express our sincere thanks to the sponsors and all persons who have been engaged in the preparation and performance o f the symposium.
