names of a ultural area in the borderland of Western and Eastern Europe at

the 2nd millenium BC. For over half a entury a dis ussion has been going on

overthetaxonomi identi ation( hronologi alandspatial)andgeneti andethni

interpretationofthis ulturalunit.

In thedebate, the1980'sand 1990'smark a signi ant ognitive turn aused

bythegrowthofthe orpusofsour es,theuseofsystemati methodsforthestudy

ofmobilesour esandtheproliferationofregional 14

Cdatings.

The present volume of "Balti -Ponti Studies" is an attempt to register this

breakthrough and a proposal fora new ttingof the Trz inie phenomenoninto

thesynthesisofEarly BronzeAge Europe.The re ordsin lude rudimentsofnew

regional systematizations,foundationsof their hronologiesbased onradio arbon

datings and a dis ussion of theme hanisms of so io- ultural hanges whi h gave

risetotheTrz inie ulturalarea andlater ontributedtoitsdisintegration.

Mierzanowi e Culturesand, towardstheirend,with theLusatianCulture(Fig.1).

Many typesofprodu tion anprovidenoorlittlehelpin dening the

identi-fying elements of theTrz inie Culture. Metal artifa ts are of nouse, unless one

wantstousethemfor hronologi alidenti ationortodes ribethe onta tsT

rz i-nie Culture ommunitieshadwithother ultures.Intheeasternzoneofthe ulture,

bronzewasneverabasi material,thereforenospe i typeofmetallurgyhad

de-velopedhere,thoughitmightbeassumedthatsomerepairworkandsomeattempts

atmakingbronzeobje tswere made.

Flintwork,thebasi type ofprodu tion,doesnotprovidemu hhelp, either.

Themainreasonforitisthesmallnumberof intartifa ts ininventories,

parti u-larlyin ompa tsets.Whiletheydoallowonetoprovethattheywereprodu edin

theBronzeAge,this doesnotenableone, however, to on ludewhi htoolforms

or kindsof toolforms an serve as identifyingmarkers of the ulture. Some

ten-den ies, however, an be easily observed in the Trz inie Culture, e.g. the large

number of ake tools, s aled pie es, knife tools and on ave tools with gradual

retou h, s rapers and side s rapers as well as bifa ial tools [Taras 1997a℄. In this

perioda newtype of si kle appeared, namelyone inwhi h thebroadest part was

just over the base (Fig. 2:6, 6:9, 12) and the working edge, straight or on ave,

sometimeshad denti ulateretou h (Fig. 6:12).The des ribed toolform marksan

1. The addition of granite breakstone to lay. The pottery is made of lay with

an admixture ofgranitebreakstone(usuallyquite ample). Vessel surfa esare very

smooth, and fra turesare mono hromati , porous orlayered. These features are

typi al of the Trz inie Culture te hnologyin thearea in question in its lassi al

stage.Withtimesome hangeswereintrodu edandso,intheterminalstage,assite

2.The hara teristi shapeoftherim.Thetypi alwayofformingtherimis

thi ke-ningand uttingitobliquely or,rarely, horizontally.Thiskindwas gradually

repla- edbynon-thi kened, utandroundedrims. Intheterminalstage non-thi kened,

roundedrimsdominate(Fig.7-9)[Taras1995:63-75;Gosik1997:63-68℄.

3.Basi vesseltypes:S-shapedpot,proledbowl,hemispheri albowl.Thedominant

kind are S-shaped pots of several types (Fig. 2:1, 2, 11, 12; 3:1, 3; 4:1-4; 6:1, 8,

10),andthedieren es on erntheirproportions,andparti ularlythelevel ofthe

widest part of the belly [Taras 1995:63-75℄. Pots of various forms an be found:

tulip-shapedones,wheretherimisbiggerindiameterthanthebelly(Fig.3:4),pots

with a funnel-shapedne kdistin tlyseparated bya fault(Fig. 7:2, 5,8),spheri al

onesandthosewith ylindri alne ks(Fig.8:1).

The proportionsof pots hange gradually: the belly is raised (vessels with a

\shoulder"), thene kisshortened,theheight ofvessels issmaller (lowpots),the

bottomgetssmallerandnarrow-bottomed(pointed-foot)potsbegintoappear(Fig.

9).Inlaterphasesfewer andfewerde oratedpotsaremade.

Bowlsarerepresentedbyhemispheri alforms(inminority)andS-shaped,

pro-ledonesof varioustypes(Fig. 3:2;5:1, 2,4, 6, 9;6:3,5,13; 7:1,3, 4,11; 8:3,4).

Thistypeofvesselsis hara terisedbyverysophisti atedornamentation,whi h an

bestillfoundevenintheterminalphase(Fig.7:1,3,4,11;8:3,4),i.e. intheperiod

whenthenumberofde oratedpotsisde reasing.

Various kinds of beakers havebeen as ribed to theTrz inie Culture. These

are: forms with hollow stems, beakers with depressed or atta hed knobs on the

bellies (Fig.6:11;7:6,9,12)and owerpot-like(mortar-shaped)ones(Fig.5:5).

Othertypesofvessels,likemugs,jugs,amphoraeor atplatesares ar ely

re-presentedinthesitesoftheTrz inie Culturein entral-easternPoland.Fragments

4.Typi alornamentation:horizontal,verti alandobliquegrooves, on entri ar hes,

horizontalatta hedboards[Taras1995:table1℄.Themotifsareoften ombined,e.g.

horizontalgrooveswith festoonsin theformof ar hesare frequentlyfound

espe- iallyonproledbowls.Horizontalgroovesalternating withverti alonesareoften

ombinedwith a ir ular rowof verti al or obliquepri ks.Atta hedordepressed

knobsareusedtode oratebeakersonstems,mugs,jugsand,thoughratherseldom,

proledbowls.Inlaterphasessmalldepressionsandhollowsappearonvesselne ks

andobliquegrooves onbellies.The most typi alde orative motifoftheTrz inie

Culture are lay spindle whorls (Fig. 2:9; 5:8) and\horn-like whorls". The latter

arefoundalongtheeasternborderofPoland,e.g.inDube zno(Fig.2:10),Hanna,

Rogatka,Gu iów,Teptiukówandare obviouslya ontinuationofthephenomenon

knownatthattimeintheUkraine.Simultaneouslyother\oriental"elementsappear

inpottery[Taras1995:mapNo.5℄:de orativemotifsintheformofobliquegrooves

bounded by horizontal ones (Gu iów, ›uraw e), \dangling" triangles (Jeziernia,

›uraw e), therepetitionoftheshapeandproportionsofbowltypestypi alofthe

KomarówCulture(Tyszow e,Gu iów)and,intheterminalstage,narrow-bottomed

(pointed-foot)vessels [Taras1997:374℄orvesselhandlesoftheNouaCulture type

(Podlodów).

TheTrz inie Cultureisasso iated with aspe i form ofenvironment

o u-pationand thestru tureof settlements. Althoughour knowledge of thestru ture

is still not satisfa tory, it is possible to observe assemblies of 1-3 settlements of

permanent hara ter (0,5-1ha in area) and several smaller onesaround grave

si-tes.Su ha on entrationwasfoundnearthetumuliinTyszow eondGu iów.The

settlementsare sometimeslo ated onsandy meadow terra es ofbig valleys, more

oftenontheedgesofsmall valleys, usuallyonsandysoils. Inmost ases,then,the

settlementsare situatedonthefrontiersof settlementzones (soil-wise). The

rela-tively highmobility ofsettlement, typi alof theearly phase, de reased withtime,

parti ularlyinuplandareas.

Takinginto onsiderationthear haeologi alandnaturals ien esour esknown

sofar,thee onomyoftheTrz inie Culture ommunitiesintheareainquestion an

bedenedastypi allyagri ultural,mostprobablywithlivesto kfarmingdominating

over rop ultivation.

Theunsatisfa torydegreetowhi hthesettlementshavebeenexaminedmakes

it impossible to re onstru t losely their organization and onstru tion.It an be

onlysaidthatthepreferredtypeofhouseswereoverground,post onstru tions,

re -tangularinshape,sometimeswith2 hambers,e.g.in›uraw e[Gurba,Kutyªowski

1970℄,Wronowi e-Paprzy a[Koj1987:193-194℄,Hrubieszów-Podgórze[Nied¹wied¹,

Panasiewi z 1994:52-53℄.

Thedominanttypeofgrave isa barrow,usuallyover 10min diameter. Most

me-ised onhillsdominatingthearea, e.g.inHali zany [Broni ki1997:56℄.Their

fun -tion was usually not only to over the remains of the dead; under the mounds

some remation graves have been dis overed, e.g. in Gu iów [Rogozi«ska 1961℄,

Lublin-D¡browa (?) [Kªosi«ska 1987℄, biritual | in Gu iów [Rogozi«ska 1963℄,

Kazimierzów 1

. Some eviden e for the fa t that together with remation skeleton

burialwas pra tised anbe providedbytheempty,regular grave pitsfoundinT

y-szow e [Ku±nierz1989:Fig. 9℄andZienki [Broni ki1997a:53℄. Alsoin Dube zno,

an example of a se ondary skeletonburial overed with a remation layer

onta-ininganimal remains was ex avated.Intheterminalstage, thetraditionofraising

barrows gradually disappears and at graves begin to appear, where bones have

been remated toa dierentdegree, e.g.in Tyszow e[Gosik1997:29℄orTrz inie

[Choty«ski1911:61-63).

Among the grave goods, relatively moderate in number, pottery dominates.

It islo ated in various ways. Whole pots are pla ed in the entre of the barrow,

neargravepits,orthesuspe tedburialpla e,e.g.inTyszow e.Intentionallybroken

vesselsarepla edindierentpartsofthebarroworbelowit,usuallyingroups,e.g.

inGu iów[Rogozi«ska1961;1963℄,Dominikanówka[Ma hnik1960:80℄,Dube zno

[Taras1995:202℄.

2. STAGESOFDEVELOPMENT

The hangesoftheTrz inie Culturewiththe ourseoftimein entral-eastern

Poland anbe re onstru tedasfollows(Fig.10).

The ultureappears intheupland partof theLublinRegion asa ompletely

formed,externalphenomenonprobablyatthebeginningofperiodBA2.The

early--Trz inie (early lassi al) ir leis hara terisedbyhighsettlementmobility|small

andtemporarysettlementsand amps.Someburialsitesprovideeviden eforsu h

dating.ThebarrowinDube znopointstoarelatively earlyo upationofthearea

bythepeople oftheTrz inie Cultureandtheeviden e isprovidedbythedating

ofthehearthbelowthemound|3520

on the analysis of the materials, mainly erami ones, rather than on laboratory

dating.Thisstage anbe also represented bysmall settlementsinL as Sto ki,site

7,W¡wolni a, site6andNowyMajdan,site1.

In pottery,all basi te hnologi al and stylisti elements are present: the

ha-ra teristi form of the rim, engraved ornaments and relief strips and forms su h

as the S-shaped pot,the hemispheri al and theproled bowl. At the end of the

periodthere appear learsignsof su essful onta tsor\absorption" ofthelo al,

post- ordstru tures bytheTrz inie Culture. Atthis stage, therelations between

obse-wi e-Paprzy a, site 5 [Kadrow 1988℄, Mohyliany [Sveshnikov1967:Table XIII:14℄,

Wªodzimierz Woªy«ski[Taras1995:Table XXVII:1℄andothers.

The regional in uen e gets stronger in the developed lassi al period, whi h

started at theearliest in BA2/BB1| at thebeginnings ofBB1, as a re e tion of

the lo al, diversiedba kground andas a result of various onta ts. It is easy to

observe onta tswith theSouthas well as hara teristi , mainly fortheBugriver

zone, onta ts with the East and South| East (a lo al trend in the Trz inie {

KomarovCultureszone).

The lassi al stage is the periodof stabilisation for theTrz inie Culture. In

theareainquestiontwodistin tstylisti andsettlementstru tures anbeobserved:

the western one | in the western part of the Lublin Upland and in the north

| westoftheSandomierz Basin,andtheeastern one|in thewestern Volhynia

Upland,theeastern part oftheLublinUpland, Rozto ze andthenorth|east of

theSandomierzBasin.Northoftheseareas|inPolesie andPodlasie|thereare

verystrong \old Trz inie " tenden ies, exemplied by traditional formsof vessels

andtheirornamentation.

In theremaining areas the basi set of pottery and de orative elements gets

mu hri her.Besidesvariousformsofpotsandbowls,newones,su hasmugs,jugs

and beakers begin to appear. New ornamentation motifs are used together with

thebasi onesthatstilldominate: pri ks,small depressions, outlinedknobs,wide,

oblique anneluresandothers.

The evolution and regionalization of the Trz inie Culture an be observed

in thegradual de rease in the number of lassi al stylisti markers and their

re-pla ement with newones, e.g.theproportionsof vessels hange| themaximum

diameter of thebelly is lo ated in the upperhalf of the vessel. The hanges are

hara teristi already towardstheendofthelate lassi al phase. Some hangesin

burial ustoms an be observed, too. The barrow andtheform of burial (layered

remation,suspe tedskeletonburial)arestillsigni ant,however,sometimesthere

are no traditional grave goods. Broken pottery and other obje ts are lo ated at

random in mounds. The phase lasts untilthe beginning of the3rd period of the

BronzeAge(BD).

The loseoftheTrz inie Culture isthetime oflooking fornewmodelsand

balan ing of opposing in uen es: theones from Volhynia and the Noua Culture

zone in the basin of the upper Dniester river, and those from the ir le of Urn

FieldsCulturesandmainlyfromtheearlyLusatianCulture.Italltakespla einthe

rsthalf oraroundthemiddleofthe3rdperiodoftheBronzeAgeandlastsuntil

theturnofthe3rdperiodoftheBronze Age.Thesepro esses havebeenre ently

observed in the settlementsexamined in the basin of the Bugriver, in Tyszow e,

Teptiuków,PodlodówandHrubieszów{Podgórze.

In thewestof theLublin Region, low vessels (tall bowls orvases) dominate,

apartfromslimvesselswithsmall bottoms.Thein reaseinthenumberof

unorna-mented pots andthe presen e of ri hly de oratedbowls an be observed here as

well.

The dis ussionover therole oftheTrz inie Culturein theformation ofthe

LusatianCultureintheLublinRegionleadstothefollowing on lusions:thelo al

peoplegraduallygotassimilatedintotheLusatianCulturegroupsofCentralPoland

type.Thepro ess,however,didnotleavepermanent tra es.It anbeobserved,for

instan e, in the emetery oftheLusatian Culture in Woªkowiany 2

,where

narrow--bottomedvesselswereusedasurns,whileothervesselswerede oratedwithmotifs

typi aloftheTrz inie Culture.Thestylisti reli s arealso visibleinothersitesof

theearlyLusatianCulture.
