P age 9: A b o u t t h e p u b l i c a t i o n o f „ A c t a T o m i c i a n a " , by W ład ysław Pociecha. Mr. Pociecha is treating of this publication of sour­ ces, well known to European historians. Thirteen volum es have ap p eared hitherto, printed for the K órnik L ib rary (printed at the expen se of the Kórnik L ibrary). The rest of the m aterial will be contained in about eighteen volum es more. The author com pletes and m akes corrections concerning the d etails of the life of S tan isław Górski, editor of this collection of sources in the X V I. century, estim ates the value of his work, criticizes the hitherto app lied method of publishing and deliberates what method should be applied for the future. The publication of the successive fourteenth volume is being prepared by Mr. Pociecha. The present stage of the work allow s to fix the date on which the printing of the fourteenth volume of „A c ta T om iciana" for the y ear 1947 will be started. This publication is financed by the Foundation „K órnik E stablish m en ts“ at Kórnik.

The author illu strates the p art which Poland p lay ed in the struggle for the Com m and of the B altic S e a (Dominium M aris Baltici) in the y ears 1560— 1572. The culminating point of this struggle fa lls in the period of the Northern Seven Y ear's W ar (1563— 1570), which w as ended with the treaty of p eace in Szczecin in the y ear 1570. M r. Bodniak discu sses P o lan d's program m e concerning the affairs of the S e a s in that period and its being brought into realization by king Sigism ond A ugust with the aid of a fleet consisting of priv ateers; he describes the origines and the organization of that fleet, her activity on the B altic S e a in the blockade of Sw eden and of the port of N arva, which w as cau sed by Poland and weighs the resu lts of that blockade for the years 1560— 1572. A t the sam e time the author pictures P olan d's diplom atic action, that aim ed at securing her concern on the B altic S e a and in the B altic region and more particularly at controlling the navigation from W est to N arva which at that time w as m aking much noise, as well as a t guarantying free navigation to and from the Polish harbours.

This ano­ nymous political treatise under the title, quoted above, has been published in print from a m anuscript in the year 1921 by the „L ib rary of Polish W riters" (Biblioteka Pisarzów Polskich). In the preface to this edition the authorship has been ascribed to Ja n Jan uszow ski. M r. Bodniak demon­

strates that in reality it w as M ikołaj K ossobudzki, secretary to the king Sigism ond A ugust, afterw ards senator, who w as responsible for its author­ ship. In the time between 1582 and 1585 he wrote treatise in Latin under the title: „D e adm inistranda R epublica com m entarius" and dedicated it to the king Stephen Batory. Jan u szow ski tran slated this treatise into Polish and changed the title for: „The K ing's M irror".

The author describes the authography of „B eniow ski", the work of Ju liu s Słow acki, one of the greatest Polish poets. She points out and gives the characteristic of the differences between the authography and the first edition of that work.

The author d eals with a copy from the first edition of G arczyriski's poem s which is kept in the Kórnik Library. Sh e publishes in print a poem of that poet with a dedication to Claudine Potocka, the authography of which is inserted in that volume.

P age 302: U n k n o w n m i n i a t u r e s of N a p o l e o n a n d a s k e t c h d e s i g n f r o m L o n g w o o d i n t h e K ó r n i k c o l l e c t i o n s , by Jó z e fa O rańska. The author gives a description of unknown contem po­ rary portraits of N apoleon and of a design from the year 1840 representing the house in which the Em peror w as living in St. H elena. Both the m iniatures an d the draw ing are kept in the M useum at Kórnik. The authors of the m iniature portraits were J . B. Isab ey and J . B ordes.

P age 306: R e c o r d s . This p art of the periodical gives inform ations about the conditions of existence of the K órnik Library under G erm an control in the years 1939— 1945 and contains its directory's accounts of the efforts, tending to heal the wounds of the war.
