the 2nd millenium BC. For over half a entury a dis ussion has been going on
overthetaxonomi identi ation( hronologi alandspatial)andgeneti andethni
interpretationofthis ulturalunit.
In thedebate, the1980'sand 1990'smark a signi ant ognitive turn aused
bythegrowthofthe orpusofsour es,theuseofsystemati methodsforthestudy

The present volume of "Balti -Ponti Studies" is an attempt to register this
breakthrough and a proposal fora new ttingof the Trz inie phenomenoninto
thesynthesisofEarly BronzeAge Europe.The re ordsin lude rudimentsofnew
regional systematizations,foundationsof their hronologiesbased onradio arbon
datings and a dis ussion of theme hanisms of so io- ultural hanges whi h gave
risetotheTrz inie ulturalarea andlater ontributedtoitsdisintegration.

THE TRZCINIEC SOCIO-CULTURAL SYSTEM AT THE
OUTSET OFITS CAREER
I have raised the issue of the ne essity to investigate the spreading of the
Trz inie Culture in the western zone of its range in the ontext of the de line
oftheEarlyBronze Age ivilization already inseveral publi ations[Kadrow1995;
Górski,Kadrow1996℄. In thispaper Ishall attemptto re onstru t thefall of the
\EarlyBronzeworld".Thefallgave waytothedevelopmentof ultureswherethe
so io- ulturalpro essunfoldedalongnewprin iples.OneofthemwastheTrz inie
Culture.
1. ANOUTLINEOFTHEHISTORYOFDEVELOPMENTOFTHE
CULTURALUNITSOFTHEEARLYBRONZEAGEINEUROPE
Inhislatestapproa h,JanMa hnik[Kozªowski,Ma hnik1996℄pla esthe
ori-ginsoftheBronzeAgeinEuropeinthedrainageoftheMiddleandL owerDanube
inthetime orrespondingtothede lineoftheVu edolCulture.Undertheimpa tof
Aegean-Anatolianin uen es|around2500-2400BC|several ultures ameinto
beingin ludingSomogyvar-Vinkov i,Mak o-Kosihy-
Caka,S hne kenberg-GlinaIII.
Theywereall hara terized byasigni ant degreeofsimilarityofmaterial ulture
traits. It should be stressed, however, thatthese populationsknew only the
te h-nologyof making opper (possibly gold) goodswhi h were produ edona rather
small s ale.
A omparisonoftherangesofsu hDe lineNeolithi ulturesasCordedWare
and Bell Beakers with thepla es where sour esof opper and tin were available
givesaroughestimateofthebordersofthese ondary radleoftheEuropeanEarly
beenlo atedinsouthernand entralGermany,theCze hRepubli andtheadja ent
portionofAustria.Theentirelynew ulturalqualitythatwasbeingborntheretook
form,tosomedegree, undertheimpa tofthesaidMiddleDanube ultural enter.
Attheturnofthe3rdmillennium BC, theredevelopedsu h ulturesasStraubing,
Adlerberg,Unterw olblingand
Uneti e(Fig.1).Onlythe rsttwooftheabovelisted
ultures had a developed inventory of metal artifa ts, mainly ornaments, already
around 2200 BC. Somewhat later, about 2000 BC, metallurgy developed in the
remaining two ultures, too. It is from that moment that bronze artifa ts began
to appear in mass quantities. Besides already known small wire and sheet metal
produ ts, asting of larger obje ts, e.g. raised-edge axes, began on a large s ale
(Fig.2).
Thislatter stage of theEarly Bronze Age is related tothe lassi al phase of
the
Uneti e Culture. Paradoxi ally enough, theoldest \ lassi al"
Uneti e bronze
obje tsappeared innorthern(Melz)and entral(HelmsdorfandL eubingen)
Ger-manyandin Wielkopolska( kiMaªe). Admittedly,these assemblages do ontain
elements from theCarpathian Basin (gold Lo kenringin Helmsdorf) [ f. Gr oler
1907℄ and Transylvania (SantDragomiresti-type i e-axe in Melz) [ f. Rassmann,
S hokne ht1997℄,but theynolongerde ide onthe hara ter oftheassemblages.
Havingape uliartraitoftheirown,theyarerepresentativesofanewandsingular
ivilizational enterthat ameintobeinginthenorthernperipheryoftheemerging
Uneti eCulturalCir leabout2000BC(Fig.1:2).Forthenext200years,theCir le
wasin its lassi alphaseadominant ulturalfa torin broadlyunderstoodCentral
Europe.Italsoexertedastrongin uen eonthedevelopmentof ulturalgroupsin
southernEngland(Wessex),southernS andinavia(beginningsoftheNordi Cir le)
and in Spain(El Argar Culture). Emulations oreven importsof
Uneti e daggers
are foundinGree e andAnatolia, too.
Intheperiodunderdis ussion,areas ofCentral-WesternEurope,despitea
di-visionintothree fundamentallydi erent provin esofburial rituals
(Ble hkreiskul-turen,
Uneti eandNordi ),arestronglyuni edinthattheyaresaturatedwithhuge
amounts of diverse metal goods. Sonumerous an appearan e of su h goods was
aresponsetoagreatdemandforprestige obje tsbylo al ommunities,whi hisan
indire tindi ationofadvan edpro essesoftheirspontaneousso ialdi erentiation
or ranking [L arsson1986; Vandkilde 1996℄.In addition, these goodstookpart in
ideologymaterializationpro essesofso ietiesundergoingtransformations[L arsson
1986℄.Equallyimportantwasthefa tthatmanyofthesegoods(ne kla eswitheyes,
raised-edgeaxes)servedasobje tmoney?[Shennan1993;Sommerfeld1994℄.Ithas
tobe made absolutely learthatthis\money"didnotfun tionthenasa measure
ofmarket value ontrarytothe ulturesofthe ontemporaneousMiddleEast [ f.
Klengel 1995℄.Itwas rather a measureof\transa tions"entered intowith a deity

Middle East, whi h, to be sure, knew the te hnology of smelting bronze already
earlier,neverdevelopedprodu tionofgoodsmadeofthisalloyonsolargea s ale
asdidtheso ietiesofthewesternpart ofCentralEurope.
Aspe i hara teristi of theCentral-Western European ivilization is then
a greatadvan e of pro esses ofinternaldi erentiationofso ietiesin the
environ-mentofte hnologi allyadvan edmetallurgyandadevelopedlong-rangeex hange.
This is eviden ed by an in redibly heavy demand for symbols of prestige in the
formofmetalobje ts.Thebasi typeofso ialtiesmusthave ontinuedtobeblood
ties(e.g. lans)withunderdeveloped ornon-existentterritorialor politi al
stru tu-res[ f. Harding 1984; Rowlands 1984; Sherratt1984℄.Unlikethe MiddleEastern
BronzeAge,theso ialdi erentiationwasnota ompaniedbyelaboratestru tures
of territorial states, urbanization or omplex forms of authority. Apartfrom
systems( ase ofHammurabi), s riptusedto preservetradition,et . Consequently,
theso io- ulturalstru turesinthatareawerenotpermanentwhile ultural hanges
didnottake theformofa ontinuousa umulationofexperien efromthepast.
During the rst four enturies of the Bronze Age there emerged as many
as three independent enters of ultural and te hnologi al innovations. The rst
overedtheareasoftheUpperDanube(2200-2050BC),these ondstret hedover
theterritoryofthenorthernrangesofthe
Uneti eCulture(2050-1900BC)whilethe
third omprised Bohemia andMoravia (1900-1750BC. The lastmentioned enter
was hara terized byanunusuallyhigh on entrationofhoardsin ludingso- alled
\obje t"money[Gerlo 1993;Innerhofer1997℄.
Thefourth enter,developinginthenortheasternpartoftheCarpathianBasin
in 1750-1400BC as a omplex of F uzesabony, Mad'arov e and Veterov Cultures
(Fig.1), onstitutesanewquality in thehitherto ivilizational arrangement ofthe
EarlyBronzeAge.Itdevelopedin lose onta twiththeAegeanworld.Beginnings
ofmorepermanentpoliti alandterritorialstru tures,proto- ities(Bar a,Otomani)
[ f. Bintli 1984℄,monumental stonear hite ture (Spissky
Stvrtok),relatively
nu-merousgoldobje tsnexttori hbronzeprodu tionandnumerousstylisti elements
testifyto losesimilarities to theMy enaean Culture [Vladar1973℄.It an be
su-spe ted that, together with those material ulture omponents, the world known
from theoldeststrataof Homer's worksmade its debutin theCarpathianBasin.
Nexttobloodtiesthat ontinuedtoplayanimportantroleasaba kboneofso ial
lifethereappearedstrongterritorialtiesaswellasloyaltytothedynasty.Itisexa tly
fromHomerthatwe knowofthelatter hara teristi andthe ultofheroeswhose
featsareremembered insongs[Hauser 1974;Hammond1977;Lu e1987℄.
The fth ivilizational enter,thebeginnings ofwhi hshouldbe datedas
on-temporaneous with the F uzesabony, Mad'arov e and Veterov omplex, was the
ir le ofNordi ultures[Vandkilde1996℄.Despite noti eablein uen es fromthe
CarpathianBasinithadaverysingular hara ter.
Nexttotheabovementioned ultural enters,thedevelopmentofEpi-Corded,
CarpathianCulturalCir le(ECCC) an beobserved[ f.Ma hnik1972℄.Rea hing
ba katleast to2300BC,itsbeginningspre edethemature ulturesoftheBronze
Age.Initsemergen eadominantrolewasplayedbytheCordedWareCultureand
to some degree theBell Beaker Culture with persistentsoutheastern inspirations.
Unlikethe
Uneti e ir le andBle hkreiskulturen, whi hdevelopedundera
predo-minant in uen e of theBell Beaker Culture (BBC), ECCC's image (asthe name
itselfshows)was hie yformedbytheCordedWare Culture[Kadrow1995℄.
A strong territorial behavior of Mierzanowi e Culture populations, ECCC's
major omponent, was manifested by a stable network of large and long-lasting
head settlements. Extreme onsisten ywas also exhibited in observing stri t rules
wasonlyinlo algroupsofthelatephase(e.g.SamborandSzarbia)thatranking,or
spontaneousinternaldi erentiationofso ieties, ametotheforewhi hhadalready
prevailed elsewhere sin e the domination of the BBC. A low number of metal
obje ts, pra ti ally nobronze goods,with few othertypesof artifa ts whi h ould
be taken forprestige obje tstestifyto a verylow intensity, as ompared toother
ivilizational enters, of so ial di erentiation pro esses within the Mierzanowi e
Culture[Kadrow1995℄.
Worthnoti ingisthefa tofindependent ulturaldevelopmentofthedis ussed
ir leinalongtimeperspe tive.However,itisnot learwhetheritwasane e tof
notparti ipatingin thelong-range,inter ultural ex hange ofmainlymetalobje ts.
It may have been quite the opposite, namely, the isolationism of human groups
of this ulture was too diÆ ultan obsta le to over ome for possible initiators of
a long-range ex hange. Examples of quite a few imitations of metal prestige
ob-je ts (popularin ivilizational enters) whi hwere madebyMierzanowi e Culture
populationsfromotherraw-materials, mainly stone( intaxes, si kles, spearheads
ordaggers,et .),suggestyetanotherhypothesis.TheMierzanowi e ulture
popula-tions,bytheveryfa tofimitatingthem,manifestedtheirinterestinprestigeobje ts
anda greatdemandforthem.Consequently,theabsen eofmetalobje tsmadeof
thoseraw-materials thatwere exploited in Bohemia, Central Germany or onthe
Upper Danube from their territory an signify a deliberate elimination of these
populationsfromtheex hangesystemofmetalgoodsbytheirprodu ersandusers
[Kadrow1997℄.
2. THEBEGINNINGSOFTHETRZCINIECCULTURE
Thevastexpansesoflandtotheeast andnorthoftheabove outlined ultural
omplexeswere o upied bygroupsidenti edbya generalnameofsub-Neolithi ,
forestor East-Europeanat theonsetoftheBronze Age[Ko±ko 1996℄.In the3rd
millenniumBC, thedominantamongthemwastheComb-likeandStrokedPottery
CulturerepresentedbyLinin-typepottery[Wi±la«ski1979℄.The ulture'ssettlement
points on entratedinMazowsze [Ko±ko1996℄while single,dispersed settlements
rea hed as far as the mouth of the Oder in the west and the Middle Dnieper
intheeast.Atthede line oftheNeolithi , inthisarea andin theterritorieslying
fartherwest,i.e.inDenmark,northernGermany,atthemouthoftheRhineoreven
in England ertainelements appeared that onne ttogetherthese vastterritories.

While it an bea epted that ertainstylisti inspirations(sinuouspotform),
whi h later had a de isive impa t onthe Trz inie Culture's erami produ tion,
ame from Danish and NorthGerman ommunities at the de line of theSingle
Grave Cultureandlater alsofrom Iwno enters(e.g. manysigni ant
ornamenta-tionpatterns),itseemswrongtorestri ttheareaoforiginoftheTrz inie Culture
onlytothenorth-westerndire tionwith respe ttoitslo ation.The apparent
oin- iden eoftherangesoftheComb-likeandStrokedPotteryandTrz inie Cultures
[Ko±ko1996,Fig. 2℄suggests thatthelatter mayhavealso rystallized inthe
envi-ronmentoftheformer.The on entrationof sub-Neolithi sitesin Mazowszeand
the hara teristi sofTrz inie Culturepotteryfoundtherepointtothisregionasyet
anotherimportant enter(nexttoKujawy)oftheoriginofthis ulture[Czebreszuk
1996℄.
3. THEREASONSOFTHEFALLOFTHECENTRALEUROPEANEARLY
BRONZECIVILIZATION
KristianKristiansen [1994℄ believedthattheessen eof ivilizational and
ul-tural hanges in the Bronze Age andin the earlier periodsof the Iron Age was
there urrent, rhythmi al domination oftwo su essiveso io- ultural systems:(a)
an agri ultural one,settled (frequently withdefensive settlements),with large and
moderately egalitarian emeteries and (b) animal-raising one, more mobile, with
onspi uousgraves of distinguishedindividuals. These so io- ulturalsystemswere
notonlyinterrelatedintime(whi hwasmentionedabove),butalsoinspa e.Type
'a' systemswere typi alof entral areas while type 'b' ones of peripheries. A
hara terized bystable relationsbetween entralareas andperipheries. Instage II
the ivilizational enter vanished with its pla e being taken by the so io- ultural
systemtypi al ofthe periphery.In stage III a new ultural enter was formed. In
this pro ess an important role was played by theimpa t from the ivilizationally
advan ed regions of theMiddle East andthe eastern Mediterranean [Kristiansen
1994℄.Theoutlinedme hanismisverywellillustratedbythepro essofsuper eding
the ulturesoftheEarlyBronze ivilizationbythoseoftheTumulusCir le.
In the ase underdis ussionhere, i.e. the questionof mutual intera tions of
the entralareasoftheCentralEuropeanEarlyBronze ivilizationandthenas ent
Trz inie Culture,anotherstru turalelementshouldbeintrodu ed.Whatismeant
hereare so io- ulturalsystemsthatdidnotparti ipate inthevigorousex hange of
ideas, goods or populationmovements along the enter-periphery line. From the
pointof view ofthe dynami sof hange, theadja ent territoriesof sub-Neolithi
ulturesneighboring thearea inthenorth-eastremained ompletely dormant.For
thisreasonthey annotbe onsideredaperiphery,buttheyshouldbede nedrather
asmarginalzonesinrespe tofthe enter.Onlytoaverylowdegreeandsuper ially
were themarginal zonesa e tedbythein uen esfromtheECCC, whi hmay be
eviden edbytheassemblageCpotteryoftheLinin-type[Kempisty1973;Wi±la«ski
1979℄.Materialeviden eofmutualpermeationofideasbetweentheearlieststageof
theTrz inie CultureandthegroupsofthelatephaseoftheMierzanowi eCulture
are also extremely s ar e [Górski, Kadrow 1996℄. The opening of the Trz inie
Culturetoextraneousin uen es,forinstan epre-Lusatianmetallurgi algoodsand
pottery patterns hara teristi of theF uzesabony and Mad'arov e Cultures, took
pla e whenthe dominationofthe EarlyBronze ultures wasbroken northofthe
