T h e m a in b o d y o f th e fu n g u s , k n o w n as t h e m y c e liu m , is b u i l t u p o t a m ass o f fin e th re a d s o r hyphse : th e s e hyp hse, i n t h e case o f w o o d -d e s tro y in g fu n g i, p e r m e a te th e w o o d cells a n d a re a b le t o d ig e s t th e w o o d substances, w h ic h a re m a in ly c o m po sed o f m a t e r ia l e a s ily c o n v e rte d t o s u g a r.

T h e f r u i t i n g b o d y o f t h e fu n g u s , w h ic h is in m o s t cases t h e conspicuous p a r t , is u s u a lly f o r m e d o n ly a f t e r a la rg e a m o u n t o f m y c e liu m h as been fo r m e d . T h e s e f r u it in g b o d ie s , w h ic h a re f o r m e d in t h e o p e n , p ro d u ce e n o rm o u s n u m b e rs o f m ic ro s c o p ic spores : i t has b e e n e s tim a te d t h a t th e f r u i t i n g b o d y o f a d r y - r o t fu n g u s a fo o t s q u a re c a n t h r o w o ff som e 5 m illio n spores p e r m in u t e f o r a p e r io d o f s e v e ra l d a y s . T h e s e spores, o f course, f u n c tio n as seeds, a n d as a re s u lt o f t h e ir im m e n s e n u m b e rs i t is c le a rly im p o s s ib le f o r a n y p ie c e o f w o o d in t h e o p e n n o t t o co m e in t o c o n ta c t w ith spores s o o n e r o r la te r .
