Looking
back
I wantto share my reflectionswith you on the pastyear, reminiscingaboutthefirstninemonthsinwhichEuPAOpen Proteomics (EUPROT), the newjournal ofthe European Pro-teomicsAssociation(EuPA),sawthelight.
TheeditorialboardofEUPROThashadplentyofchallenges: getting acquainted with the Elsevier electronic editorial submission system and finding good reviewers within an acceptabletimeframetotryandmeettheambitiousgoalsof bothrapidandhighqualitymanuscriptprocessing. We whole-heartedlyappreciatethepatience fromall theauthors and reviewersaswealllearnedhowtorunanewjournal.
Iwanttothankthemanyreviewerswho,oftenincomplete anonymityandentirelyvoluntarily,didtheirutmosttomeet thedemandsofahighqualityElsevierscientifictitle.Together withagreatteamofenthusiasticassociateaswellasguest editors,andthecompetentsupportbytheElsevierbackoffice, bothinAmsterdam,Boston,Ireland,andIndia,theyformthe verycoreofthehighqualitypeerreviewedjournal,EUPROT

Even moreimportantly, I wantto communicateour future vision for EUPROT. How will we make sure that our jour-nal maintains its spirit and momentum in the year (s) to come?Thisisnotasevidentasitmay seem. For instance, the Open Access publishing model, although principally embracedbymost, ifnotall, modernscientists, isyeta con-ceptwhichneedstomatureintheheadsofmany.Authors are stilladjusting tothe ideaofpayingforarticle process-ing charges. We are presently experiencing a challenging transition period, in which a new balance is being estab-lishedbetweensubscriptionbasedandopenaccessjournals. Personally I am convinced that open access will prevail as one of the important publishing models of the future. Alsosciencefundingagencieshaverealizedthis, andnewly grantedmodernprojectapplicationsnowinvariablycontain an investment proposal section to budget for publication charges.
In2014,youwillnoticethatvariousEuPAinitiativeswill be reflected in several special sections of EUPROT. A first thematic specialsection of the journal isdedicated to the proteomicssubdiscipline,Peptidomics.Otherthematicissues are beingplanned.Laterinthespringwewillhavespecial sectionsdevotedtothepastEuPA2013annualmeetinginSt. Malo(Bretagne,France)aswellastothelast‘PathProt’ (Path-Prot6)meetinginOeiras(Portugal).Passionateguesteditors arealreadyworkingeagerlyonthesesections.
Also, asectionofthejournalisdesignatedforEuPA Com-munications and another tothe EuPACompany Club. Always in line with the mission of EuPA, ‘strengthening and pro-moting fundamental proteomics research and applications acrossnationalborders’,alljournalsectionswillbeaimedat internationalproteomicsscientistsworldwide, youngandold, academicandindustrial.
