SZABLON DO PRACY Z UCZNIEM

1. Giving out the rules by the teacher:

To build a question in Past Simple Tense we need an auxiliary verb “did”.

This auxiliary verb appears before a subject in the sentence but we have to remember that the main verb has then the base form.

E.g.:

― Mary cooked dinner yesterday.

― Did Mary cook dinner yesterday?

― What did Mary cook yesterday?

― When did Mary cook dinner?

E.g.:

― John wrote a letter to his brother last Sunday.

― Did John write a long letter to his brother?

― What did John write last Sunday?

Questions about a subject we build in a different way. We do not use an auxiliary verb and the main verb has the past simple form. E.g.:

― Who wrote the book?

― Who cooked dinner yesterday?

― Who made you so happy two days ago?

Questions with the verb “be” (was/were) and “can” (could) we build by inversion. E.g.:

― John was ill last week.

― Was John ill last week?

― Who was ill last week?

E.g.:

― Tom could swim when he was six.

― Could Tom swim when he was six?

― What could Tom do when he was six?

2. Writing simple and “wh” questions

E.g. Susan cleaned the room yesterday. 1. Steve had a bad cold last week.

Did Susan clean the room yesterday? 2. We were very tired three days ago.

What did Susan do yesterday? 3. I went to the cinema yesterday.
