Me and Mark were talking outside the school when we saw a boy coming towards us. ‘That’s Tony!’ Mark told me, ‘The captain of the school football team. We went to primary school together but …’ I knew what he meant. Tony was one of the most popular boys at school, while Mark was far from that. As for me, I’d only been at this school for a few weeks and was still an outsider for many students. Tony came over to us.

‘Hi, I’m Tony’ he said. ‘You’re Adam, right? Hi, Mark’ he added. ‘Hi’ me and Mark answered. ‘Look, sorry about making fun of you in the canteen last week’ Tony went on. ‘No problem’ I said.

‘Look, Adam, I was thinking … Maybe you’d like to join our football team?’ I was surprised.

‘Why? I thought you had enough players.’

‘Actually, David’s out.’

‘He’s got injured or something?’

‘Not quite’ Tony looked embarrassed. ‘He’s a good friend of mine, so that’s what we want everyone to believe. Never had the heart for it, really. Now it’s OK, he prefers it that way.’

‘Why me? You’ve got no idea if I can play well or not’, I was really curious by now.

‘You know Jack Sandler, don’t you? He came to see my father the other day, they’re friends.

He asked me about you and was astonished I still didn’t have you in the team. The tournament starts next week, and we could do with a good midfielder.’

Jack Sandler was the football coach at my previous school. I wanted to play, but, instead, I said ‘It might not work out. It could take time before I’m really part of the team. And what about your coach?’

(3)

‘We’ve already talked about it. He wants to see you at football training this afternoon. 4 pm sharp.’

‘OK, I’ll be there.’ When Tony had left, Mark turned to me. ‘You didn’t tell me you were good at football! Wow, man! The school team!’

Before 4 pm, I was back at school. Tony and the others were already in the changing room. I came in and said ‘Hello’ to everyone. Some greeted me back, while others just nodded. Well, I wasn’t expecting to make friends at the first training session and, at least, no one appeared downright unfriendly. Tony showed me to my locker. ‘Get changed quickly, the coach is already waiting on the pitch.’

A moment later, I was outside. I’d been a little nervous before the training session, but the game was the only thing that mattered. The coach divided us into teams, and, then, we had a game of football. Although I hadn’t played for several weeks, I could see the other players respected my skills. It was a fine feeling. Afterwards, the coach stopped me.

‘Well played, Adam’ he said simply. ‘Why on earth didn’t you come to me earlier? Anyway, you’re in and now move on before you catch a cold.’ So, I just rushed back to the changing room.

Holiday problems

Last month we decided to drive to Scotland for a few days, for a short holiday. We were really looking it forward to a quiet rest in the country.

Unfortunately, a lot of things went wrong. First of all, the car was broke down just after we had left home, and we had to phone a garage and then wait by the side of the road for hours ago. By the time the car had been repaired, it was too much late to go on, so we went home. The next day we set off more early to avoid the traffic, but we had forgotten that it was a public holiday. Every one single person in the country must have had the same idea, so we found ourselves in a long traffic jam. We decided that the best thing to do was to take after a different road, and search for a hotel. First we got lost on a narrow country road, and then the car ran out of petrol. Finally, we gave up and went home for the second time.
