(PI. X X X I )
Pierwszy z nich opracowywał obszar południowo-wschodni leżący w granicach Czechosłowacji, drugi polską część fliszu centralnych K arpat (tzw. flisz podhalański, R a d o m s k i 1957, 1958).
— 260 —
dwu regionówr, niemniej jednak zarysowuje się pewien ogólny obraz w a
runków panujących w omawianym basenie fliszowym. Zostanie on nie
dzieleń stratygraficznych we fliszu centralnych K arpat autorzy byli zmu
szeni ograniczyć się niejednokrotnie do regionalnego ujęcia tem atu. Cza
sowe uszeregowanie niektórych obserwowanych zjawisk będzie mogło nastąpić z chwilą ujednolicenia stratygrafii dla całego omawianego ob
szaru.
KIERUNKI TRANSPORTU I PRZYPUSZCZALNE POŁOŻENIE OBSZARÓW ŹRÓDŁOWYCH MATERIAŁU FLISZU CENTRALNYCH KARPAT
Przedstawione na tabl. XXXI kierunki hieroglifów prądow ych i w ar
Jedno
cześnie kierunki te są bardziej zmienne niż w partiach centralnych ba
senu. Podobne stosunki zaobserwowali S. D ż u ł y ń s k i i A. S l ą c z k a (1959) w w arstw ach krośnieńskich centralnej depresji.
stępujących tutaj w środkowym eocenie ( P i c h a 1957) piaskowcach arkozowych znaleziono kierunki z południowego zachodu.
rientow anym i odwrotnie.
Najlepiej udokum entow any jest południowo-wschodni obszar źród
łowy. M ateriał fliszu okolic Preśova i Levoćskiego Pohoria pochodzi z m a
sie sedym entacji różnych ogniw fliszu, będzie mogła zostać określona do
piero w czasie dalszych badań zarówno sedymentologicznych, jak i stra
tygraficznych.

ZAGADNIENIE „WYSPY TA TRZA Ń SK IEJ”
Osobne zagadnienie stanowi rola, jaką odgrywały T atry w czasie gro
madzenia się osadów fliszu centralnych Karpat. Podczas transgresji środ
kowego eocenu T atry stanowiły ląd, który ulegał silnej erozji ( K u ź n i a r 1907, 1909, 1910, P a s s e n d o r f e r 1951, 1958).
Niektórzy autorowie przyjm ują, że T atry dostarczały m ateriału do ba
senu fliszowego przez cały czas jego istnienia ( G o ł ą b 1952, 1954, P a s s e n d o r f e r 1958, C h m e l i k 1958). Inni ( G r z y b e k i H a l i c k i 1958, R a d o m s k i 1958, A n d r u s o v 1959) stoją na stanowisku, że Tatry stosunkowo szybko zostały całkowicie zalane morzem eoceńskim.
Argum enty przeciw istnieniu „wyspy tatrzańskiej” są z n atu ry rzeczy głównie argum entam i o charakterze negatywnym. W w arstw ach chocho
wane ku domniemanej wyspie. Więcej światła rzuci na to zagadnienie szczegółowe opracowanie m ateriału zlepieńcowego występującego we fli
szu podhalańskim.

A b s t r a c t : F our source-areas contributing d etrital m aterial to the flysch basin of the C entral C arpathians are distinguished on account of the distribution of tu rb id ity cu rren t directions. The source areas w ere situated north-w est, south
west, n o rth -ea st and so u th -east of the p resen t-d ay boundaries of th e basin. The existence of currents flowing from various directions was stated in some regions w ithin one stratig rap h ic m em ber. In some areas the cu rren ts flowed from opposite directions; these areas form ed the deepest p arts of the basin during th e sedim enta
tion of the C entral C arpathians Flysch. The influence of th e T a tra m assif on the sedim entation of the investigated flysch deposits is discussed.
INTRODUCTION
The flysch basin of the Central Carpathians has been studied in p re
vious years independently by both authors 1. R. M a r s c h a l k o worked in the south-eastern p art of th e basin in Czechoslovakia, and A. R a d o m- s k i in the Polish p art of th e basin i. e. in the Podhale Flysch (R a d o m - s k 1 1957, 1958). In sum m er 1959 both authors visited briefly the rem ain
ing parts of the basin. Because of the lim ited tim e devoted to this study, th e data obtained there are less accurate th a n in the parts of the basin studied independently. However a general picture of the distribution of cu rren t directions was obtained. F u rth e r research is needed to throw mo
re light on the problem, and therefore the aim of this paper is to point out some aspects of special interest, rath er th an to present the definite ansver to the question of supply of detrital m aterial to the sedim entary basin of the Central Flysch.
The authors acknowledge the assistance of the M inistry of High Schools in Warsaw, and the M inistry of Education and C ulture in B rati
slava, which made possible their collaboration. Thanks are also due to Doc. dr M. M a h e l ' for facilitations during the w ork in Czechoslovakia.
The sediments of the C entral Flysch are filling tectonic depressions between folded elements of the Slovakian block of the Central Carpa
thians and the Pieniny K lippen Belt. The present-day erosional bounda
ries of the m ain area" of occurrence of the Central Flysch are extending along the outcrops of pre-T ertiary rocks of the Fatra, Nizke T atry and Cierna Hora on the south and south-west. In the w est the Central Flysch basin is divided by the tectonic elements of Choc and T atra into two separate regions: the O rava-Podhale-Spis region in the north, and the Liptovska K otlina region in the south. The north boundary of th e Cen
tra l Flysch basin is formed by the Klippen zone 2.
The contact of the C entral Flysch w ith the surrounding structural units is partly sedim entary and partly tectonic. Conglomerates and sand
stones containing local m aterial and formed during the Middle Eocene transgression (bazalny vyvoj of the Czechoslovakian authors) are un d er
lying the Flysch series. A t places, num m ulitic limestones are developped, lying concordantly over the conglomerates and under the Flysch. The con
glomerates and sandstones are present along the southern border of the C entral Flysch basin and on the norther slopes of the Tatra. Instead, the boundary of the Central Flysch w ith the K lippen Zone, w ith th e southern slopes of the Tatra, and w ith Tertiary rocks east of the m eridian of P re- sov has a tectonic character.
The Central Flysch series of the Carpathians ranges in age from Mid
dle Eocene up to Lower Oligocene ( M a t e j k a 1927, B i e d a and H o r - w i t z 1931, A n d r u s o v 1938, 1956, B i e d a 1946, K a n t o r o v a 1954, B e n e s o v a 1957, L e s k o 1958, M a r s c h a l k o and S a m u e l 1959)
1 The flysch sedim ents filling -this basin are called h ere for sake of sim plicity
„C en tral Flysch”, following th e te rm generally accepted by Czechoslovakian geo
logists.
2 Besides th e described basin, the C en tral Flysch is cropping out in a few sm all isolated areas which are not included in the p resent study.

and is approxim atively 3 000 m etres thick. Disturbances caused by Mio
cene orogenic movements are small. The Flysch beds are dipping steeply only near the contacts w ith the surrounding Mesozoic stru ctu ral units.
The Flysch series is composed m ainly of intercalating conglomerates, sandstones and shales. O ther rocks, as ferrugineous dolomites and m an
ganese ores are playing a quite subordinate part.
Coarse-grained sandstone beds display usually various types of graded bedding, often followed by lam ination near the top of th e bed. Fine-grain
ed, thick bedded sandstones are most frequently homogenous, while the thin-bedded ones are either lam inated or display current bedding. C ur
rent bedding is prevalent in some members ( R a d o m s k i 1958). Slump structures are of widespread occurrence ( G o ł ą b 1954, G r z y b e k and H a l i c k i 1958, R a d o m s k i 1958).
The stratigraphy of the Central Flysch is not yet established in de
tails. Stratigraphic divisions applied in various parts of the basin are not correlated. These shortcomings of the stratigraphy are a handicap for paleogeographic research. The presented conclusions shall be probably changed in some details w hen a progress in stratigraphy will be made.
The Central Flysch series can be divided into three stratigraphic mem
bers. The lowest m em ber called Zakopane beds in Poland, and corres
ponding w ith the term „ilovcove suvrstvie severnej a jużnej facie” used by the Czechoslovakian authors (C h m e 1 i k 1958, L e s k o 1958, P r i e- c h o d s k a 1956) is characterised by a predom inance of shales. Coarse
grained conglomerates are present at places (Sambron, Tokarnia) at the base of this member. These conglomerates display all th e characteristic features of turbidites, differing thus from the underlying transgressive conglomerates, w hich cannot be attrib u ted to tu rb id ity currents.
The middle m em ber of the Central Flysch series called Chochołów beds in Poland ( G o ł ą b 1950) and „pieskovcovo-ilovcove suvrstvie” in Czechoslovakia (C h m e 1 i k 1958, P i c h a 1957) is characterised by thick- bedded sandstones.
The upper m em ber called Ostrysz beds in Poland ( G o ł ą b 1950) and Bielopotocke pieskovce in Czechoslovakia ( A n d r u s o w 1938), C h m e - 1 i k 1958) is characterised by a predom inance of sandstones, p artly feld- spathic.
The stratigraphy of the Central Flysch is different in the region north of Cierna Hora. The sediments deposited by the Middle Eocene transgres
sion are covered there by thick conglomerates ranging in age from U pper Eocene up to Lower Oligocene. These conglomerates are gradually passing towards the north-w est into fine-grained Flysch sediments ( M a r s c h a l - k o 1959, M a r s c h a l k o and S a m u e l 1959, L e s k o 1958).
DIRECTIONS OF TRANSPORT OF THE CLASTIC M ATERIAL
The directions of transport in the C entral Flysch basin w ere determ in
ed chiefly on account of directional sole m arks i. e. flute casts and prod casts 1. Besides, current bedding directions w ere m easured in outcrops
1 Descriptions of sole m arks, m ethods of determ ining th e c u rre n t direction, and a discussion of results are to be found in th e papers listed in th e references;
yielding no directional sole marks. The results of these m easurem ents a re presented on a m ap (PI. XXXI). .
The directions of tu rb id ity currents carrying the d etrital m aterial w ere different in various parts of the C entral Flysch basin. Several regions can be distinguished there:
1. The Orava — Podhale — Spis region.
2. The Sam bron region
3. The Levocske Pohorie region 4. The Liptovska Kotlina region
5. The Presov region (north of Cierna Hora).
1. T h e O r a v a — P o d h a l e — S p i s r e g i o n
The orientation of inorganic sole m arks in the w estern p art of this region (in the neighbourhood of Dolny Kubin) indicates direction of tran sp o rt from north-w est and south-w est tow ards the axis of the syn- cline formed there by the Central Flysch. C urrent directions parallel to th e present-day boundaries of th e basin are prevailing farth er east. The
se longitudinal current directions are persisting as far as Haligovce, about 90 kilom etres east from Dolny Kubin. The currents flowed to the north- -east in Orava, then changed their direction in Podhale, flowing there eastw ard, and th en tu rn ed again flowing to the south-east in the Spis area. The current directions are sim ilar in all stratigraphic m embers of the Flysch series in this region.
Some beds w ith flute casts indicating currents flowing to the w est are present in the Zakopane beds in the Spis area, among other beds w ith m arks of eastw ard flowing currents. These are the signes of changes in th e current system, w hich are very distinct farth er east 1.
The analysis of turbidity current directions m easured east of the Spis area suggests, th a t the origin of coarse-grained beds disappearing tow ards the west in the Polish (i. e. western) p art of the Spis can be explained in a different way th an it was done in some earlier papers ( R a d o m s k i 1958, 1959). Flute casts indicating a w estw ard current direction w ere found on the sole of one of such beds in sum m er 1959. It is possible, th a t a p a r t of the Flysch beds, and especially the coarse-grained ones, were deposited in this region by turbidity currents flowing to the west. The existence of such a direction of transport for the entire Flysch series in th e Polish p art of the Spis area was suggested by G r z y b e k and H a- 1 i c k i (1958), and by W a t y c h a (1950).
2. T h e S a m b r o n r e g i o n
Coarse-grained conglomerates deposited by turbidity currents, and black clayey shales, sometime resembling the Menilite shales of the O uter
1 The supply of d etrital m a te ria l by tu rb id ity currents flowing from various, and sometimes even opposite directions was described for th e first tim e from the K rosno beds (Oligocene in th e O uter C arpathians) by S. D ż u ł y ń s k i a nd A . S ł ą c z k a (1958).
— 2 6 6 —
Carpathians, are form ing there the lowest m em ber of the C entral Flysch.
The coarse-grained conglomerates (lower complex od C h m e l i k 1958) were deposited by turbidity currents flowing from th e east-northeast.
The middle m em ber composed of alternating sandstones and shales, and called Sam bron beds by C h m e l i k (1958), corresponds probably w ith the Zakopane beds in the Polish Podhale area. Two opposite direc
tions of turbidity currents w ere stated in this region. Some beds display flute casts indicating currents flowing from the west; these cu rren t m ay be considered to be the prolongation of the longitudinal currents of the Orava — Podhale — Spis region. O ther beds w ere deposited by tu rb id ity currents flowing from the north-east and east. In the opinion of the au
thors the described region coincides w ith the deepest part of the basin which was filled by turbidity currents flowing both from the w est and from the east as well as from the north-east.
3. T h e L e v o c s k e P o h o r i e r e g i o n
The Sam bron beds are covered by a thick sandstone complex in the Levocske Pohorie region. T urbidity currents flowing from the north-east were predom inant there. However flute casts indicating currents flowing from the south-east are present on some beds. This direction is especially strongly m arked in the area north of Cierna Hora (Ma r s c h a l k o 1958).
Similar current directions w ere stated east and south-east of the Ta
tra. Currents flowing from the north-east and south-east w ere equally frequent there. The la tte r direction is prevailing in area situated south- -east of the T atra ( M a r s c h a l k o 1958). The beds cropping out in this region are somewhat older th an the sandstones of the Levocske Pohorie.
The oldest m em ber of the Central Flysch in this region — correspon
ding w ith the Zakopane beds — is probably som ewhat older th an the Sam bron beds ( K a n t o r o v a 1954, P r i e c h o d s k a 1956). The sand
stone beds of this m em ber w ere deposited by currents flowing from the east. The same directions are present in the eastern p art of th e Liptov
ska K otlina region.
4. T h e L i p t o v s k a K o t l i n a r e g i o n
Because of poor exposures and inadequate knowledge of stratigraphy the m easurem ents of current directions made in this region are not suf
ficiently accurate, and fu rth e r research is needed to obtain a more com
plete picture of cu rren t directions. Sim ilarly as in the Orava — Podha
le — Spis region there is evidence of currents flowing from the south- -w est obliquely to the axis of the basin in the w estern p art of the Lip
tovska Kotlina. Exposures are scanty in the central p art of the region, bu t currents flowing from the w est parallel to the axis of the basin w ere stated there. C urrents flowing from th e east appear suddenly east of Strba, in the eastern p a rt of the Liptovska K otlina region.
The relation of these tw o areas w ith contrasting cu rren t directions is not clear. Two explanations are possible:
a) currents flowing from opposite directions w ere present in the same stratigraphic member, like in the Sam bron area, and the m arked differ
ence between current directions in the central and in the eastern p art of the Liptovska Kotlina region is caused by the small num ber of expo
sures. If this explanation is correct, it m ust be assumed th a t the deepest p a rt of the basin shifted from the Sam bron area to the eastern p art of th e Liptovska Kotlina region.
b) A nother possibility is, th a t the opposite directions of currents are present in members differing in age. However, the first explanation seems m ore probable, by analogy w ith observations made north of the Tatra.
F u rth e r studies are needed to bring a definite solution of the problem.
5. T h e P r e s o v r e g i o n
Thick, coarse-grained sediments w ere deposited im m ediatly off the Cierna Hora massif w hich is composed of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks.
A Wildflysch facies, characterised by huge subm arine slumps is devel- opped in the south-eastern p art of the region. The conglomerates dis
play an increased proportion of graded bedding towards the west, bu t there are also beds of m edium -grained sandstones showing current bed
ding of the torrential type. The thickness of the cross-bedded sandstone layers is ranging up to 60 cm. Sometimes graded sandstones are filling erosional channels which m ay reach 2 m etres in depth. Such beds contain blocks of sandstones of Middle Eocene age eroded from the substratum of the Flysch ( M a r s c h a l k o 1959). F lute casts indicate currents flow
ing from the south east. F arth er w est the currents flowed from the east and east-south-east. Coarse-grained conglomerates and sandstones are gradually wedging out, and are replaced in the north-w estern p art of the region by fine-grained sandstones and shales. These changes of lithology are rapid, and therefore it is impossible to correlate individual beds even on small distances.
Currents flowing from the north-east deposited some of the fine-grain- ed sandstone beds in the northern part of the region.
Little is known about the sedim entation of the U pper Eocene and Lo
w er Oligocene Flysch w est and north-w est of Presov. Various directions of currents indicated by flute casts and current bedding w ere m easured in this p a rt of the basin. Currents flowing from the south and from the w est w ere im portant there. The relation of the area situated north-w est of Presov to the other regions is not clear, and fu rth e r research is needed in this p art of the basin.
PALEOGEOGRAPHIC CONCLUSIONS
The presented distribution of current directions allows to determ ine to a lim ited extend the position of source areas of d etrital m aterial and th e paleogeography of the Central Flysch basin.
— 268 —
Four distinct „near-source” zones can be distinguished in the Central Flysch basin. They are characterised by current directions more or less perpendicular to the axis of the basin and more variable th a n in the cen
tra l p art of the basin.
These near-source zones are situated west of Dolny Kubin, w est of Liptovsky Mikulas, east of S tara Lubovna and north of Cierna Hora.
One of the source areas of d etrital m aterial was situated somewhere in the region of Dolny Kubin, north and south-w est of the present-day area covered by the C entral Flysch. Feldspathic sandstones present there in the middle m em ber of the Flysch series w ere deposited by turbidity currents flowing from the south-west. It is possible th a t the d etrital m a
terial of these sandstones was carried from the crystalline massif of Mala Fatra.
The position of the source area, w hich contributed the d etrital m ate
rial to the w estern p a rt of the Loptovska Kotlina region, is not clear.
C urrents flowing from the south and south-w est w ere traced w est of Liptovsky Mikulas. It is possible therefore, th a t the d etrital m aterial w as coming from the Nizke Tatry. However, the occurrence of the C entral Flysch south of the Nizke T atry makes doubtful such a position of th e source area.
A buried massif w hich contributed detrital m aterial during the sedi
m entation of the Central Flysch is probably present north-east of S tara Lubovna, on the east end of the basin. The influence of this massif per
sisted from the lowermost p art of the Zakopane beds up to the youngest sandstones of the Levocske Pohorie. Currents carrying the d etrital m a
terial from this massif flowed far south, where they alternated w ith cur
rents flowing the south-east, i. e. from the Cierna Hora source area.
There is m uch evidence of the south-eastern source area. The detrital m aterial of the C entral Flysch in the Presov region and in the Levocske Pohorie region came from the Cierna Hora massif as well as from the Gemerides and crystalline massifs situated farth er south-east in th e vici
nity of Kosice. The conclusions based upon the directional structures in the Flysch series w ere confirmed in this region by petrographic analyses of pebbles. It was shown, th a t the coarse-grained m aterial deposited im - m ediatly off the Cierna Hora is not derived from this massif, bu t rath e r from the crystalline rocks occurring in the vicinity of Kosice (PI. XXXI).
There are also pebbles of both crystalline and sedim entary rocks unknow n in this p art of the Carpathians. Instead, the clastic m aterial coming from the Cierna Hora massif was deposited farth er west, in th e southern p a rt of the Levocske Pohorie region.
THE PROBLEM OF THE „TATRA ISLAND”
The role played by the T atra massif during the sedim entation of the C entral Flysch is a problem of great importance. The T atra massif was dry land during the Middle Eocene transgression, and the advancing sea eroded strongly its m argins ( K u ź n i a r W. 1907, 1909, 1910, P a s s e n d o r f e r 1951, 1958). However, the presence of the T atra land is only
locally m arked in the lower p art of the Zakopane beds, and its persistence during the sedim entation of the upper p a rt of the Zakopane beds and of the younger members of th e Flysch series is doubtful. Some authors assum ed th a t the T atra land contributed d etrital m aterial to the Flysch basin during the Upper Eocene and Lower Oligocene ( G o ł ą b 1952, 1954, P a s s e n d o r f e r 1958, C h m e 1 i k 1958). O ther w riters ( A n d r u s o v
1959, G r z y b e k and H a l i c k i 1958) expressed the opinion, th a t the T atra massif was rapidly covered by the Eocene sea. The occurrence of pebbles of the high-Tatric and sub-Tatric sedim entary series in the Flysch sedim ents is not a decisive argum ent in favour of the provenance of the d etrital m aterial of the Podhale Flysch from the present-day T atra Mts.
Both the high-Tatric and the sub-Tatric series are widely distributed in the Internal Carpathians, and pebbles of rocks belonging to these series w ere transported either from the Tatra, or from some other now existing or eventually buried Mesozoic massif. The latter view is supported by the occurrence of rocks not present in the T atra as exotic pebbles in the Flysch ( A n d r u s o v 1959, G o ł ą b 1952).
The argum ents against the existence of the T atra island during the sedim entation of the C entral Flysch are, as a m atter of fact, chiefly of negative character. A distinct decrease of the num ber of conglomerate beds and of grain size is observed in the Chochołów beds from the w est tow ards the east, i. e. in the direction of flow of the turb id ity currents ( R a d o m s k i 1958, G r z y b e k and H a l i c k i 1958). No such changes w ere observed in the northw ard direction.
No directional structures indicating transportation of detrital m aterial from the T atra w ere found, even in the imm ediate vicinity of the T atra massif. Instead, flute casts indicating turbidity current flowing ju st to
w ards the T atra are found, especially east and south-east of this massif.
A detailed petrographic analysis of pebbles from the conglomerates in the Podhale zone w ill throw m ore light on this problem.
GENERAL CONCLUSIONS
The presented data indicate, th a t the elongated sedim entary basin of the Central 'Flysch received the detrital m aterial from four source areas, sym m etrically situated on its both ends. The role played by each of these source areas during the sedim entation of various members of the Central Flysch shall be determ ined more precisely by fu rth e r sedimentological and stratigraphic studies. Petrographic investigations of conglomerates and sandstones would be of special interest, especially in these regions w here diffirent directions of transport w ere stated.
F u rth e r sedimentological studies shall provide additional m easure
m ents of current directions especially in the briefly studied regions.
The precise determ ination of the relation of the coarse-grained, probably p artly littoral, sediments off Cierna Hora to the typical Flysch should be of great importance. The unsignificant tectonic disturbances of the C entral Flysch facilitates greatly the sedimentological studies. The re

suits of such studies shall not only elucidate the paleogeography of this p art of the Carpathians, b u t will also be of great value for th e methodo
logy of sim ilar studies in other geosynclinal regions.
