1. Large-scale photoelectrochemical solar-to-hydrogen conversion has no practical future if the conversion devices are not based on earth-abundant and water-resistant materials (this thesis).
2. The Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombination at defect-rich surfaces or interfaces is one of the key issues that limits the application of silicon nanocrystals in highly efficient solar cells (this thesis). 3. In many published articles, the blackbody radiation signals in the Raman spectrum of the heated free-standing silicon nanocrystals are ignored, partly due to the focus on the more frequently studied photoluminescence mechanisms (this thesis).
4. The reduction of carbon dioxide into methane fuel by a photoelectrochemical device is a more practical approach than solar water-splitting due to the expensive cost of hydrogen storage.
5. Sharply focusing a laser beam of a low intensity on a small spot of the free-standing silicon nanocrystals will easily melt the material. However, focusing all the efforts on a narrow range of research topics will not always leads a researcher to solve scientific questions efficiently.
6. The transition of energy utilization, water and waste management, and food production towards sustainable practices is essential in the civilization process of human beings.

1. Fotoelektrochemische zon-naar-waterstof conversie heeft geen grootschalige toekomst wanneer de gebruikte apparaten niet zijn gebaseerd op veel voorkomende en water resistente materialen (dit werk). 2. De Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombinatie op defect-rijke oppervlakten of interfaces is één van de belangrijkste belemmeringen voor de toepassing van silicium nanokristallen in hoog efficiënte zonnecellen (dit werk).
3. In veel gepubliceerde artikelen worden de signalen van ‘black body’ radiatie in het Raman spectrum van de verwarmde, vrijstaande silicium nanodeeltjes genegeerd, gedeeltelijk door de focus op de vaker bestudeerde fotoluminescentie-mechanismen (dit werk).
4. De reductie van koolstof dioxide in de brandstof methaan door een fotoelektrochemisch apparaten is een meer praktische aanpak dan solar gebaseerde watersplitsing door de hoge kosten van waterstof-opslag.
5. Wanneer je met een lage intensiteit laserstraal scherp focust op een kleine gebied van vrijstaande silicium nanokristallen, dan zal het materiaal makkelijk smelten. Aan de andere kant zal het focussen van al je onderzoek op een klein gebied er niet altijd toe leiden dat een onderzoeker ook efficiënt wetenschappelijke vraagstukken kan oplossen.
6. De transitie van energie-gebruik, water- en afval management en voedselproductie naar een duurzame praktijk is essentieel voor het beschavingsproces van de mensheid.
7. Een van de uitdagingen in het publiceren van multidisciplinair onderzoek is om redacteuren en referenten met verschillende achtergronden alle concepten in het manuscript te laten begrijpen. 8. De procedure van het zoeken van een baan is een efficiëntie manier om uit te vinden hoe de maatschappij werkt.
9. Het overleven van een auto-ongeluk op de snelweg helpt een mens de waarden van leven, het leven en liefde beter te begrijpen.
10. Onze grootste kracht ligt niet in nooit gevallen zijn, maar in iedere keer weer opstaan na je val (Ralph Waldo Emerson – gebaseerd op Confusius).
Deze stellingen worden opponeerbaar en verdedigbaar geacht en zijn als zodanig goedgekerud door de promotoren prof. dr. M. Zeman en dr. A.H.M. Smets.
