zbio-THE PRESENT AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES OF THE STATE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN WARSAW In
May
2008 the StateArchaeological
Museum in Warsaw celebrat-ed its 80th
anniversary'.
Both in the past and at present the Museumhas united the functions of a research institute with that of an
ex-hibition
gallery.
It has a staff off 120, two thirds of whom are mu-seum sciencespecialists.
Among
them areforty
or soprofessional
archaeologists,
six with a PhD orprofessor's
degrees.
Most of themuseum staff are concerned - within the frameworks of
depart-ments
taking
care of the collections - with scientificanalysis
andinterpretation
of collections, excavation and withdeveloping
exhi-bition scenarios.
istry
of Culture and NationalHeritage.
This demonstrates thesig-nificant involvement of the State
Archaeological
Museum in protec-tion ofarchaeological
heritage
in Poland.The Museum continues to
publish
itsyearly
journal
"Wiadomo?ciArcheologiczne':
the oldestarchaeological
publication
of its kind inPoland, in
publications
include
monographs
ofarchaeological
sites and scientificcatalogues
of the collections,particularly
of thoseoriginating
from areas ofpre-1795
Poland, and exhibitioncatalogues.
The staff of the StateArchaeological
Museumpublish
atotal of seventy or so scientific andpopular
publications
every year. In 2008, after a break of manyyears, the Museum revived its
"Materia?y
Staro?ytne
i Wczesno?rednio-wieczne" series which featureslarger
monographs
andanalytical
studies.The second
largest
unit associated with follow up work on thecollections is the
Department
of Conservation and the FacsimilesSection. The
Department
carries out conservation work ofvirtu-ally
all types ofarchaeological
object,
except for verylarge
timber elements. TheAnthropology
Laboratory
of the Museumspecialises
inanalysis
of human remains,mostly
from cemetery sites excavatedby
the Museum's ownarchaeological
expeditions.
An extensivedepartment
is concerned wit hcataloguing
the collections which derive from over 11 000 sites, mostly
from theterritory
of presentday
Poland as well as from theterritory
which was part of the Polish Commonwealth until 1795. The Museums extensive archivalmate-rial - documentation from
past and present
archaeological
research,legacies
of manyleading
Polisharchaeologists
etc, is stored andinvestigated
in theDepartment
of Documentation. The Museumhas a
specialised
ScientificLibrary
of ca 60 000 volumes.Many
ofthem are
unique
copies
in Poland. TheLibrary
is open to allresearch-ers,
including
also students ofarchaeology.
Over the years, the Museum staff have been
carrying
out research andpublication
grants of the State Committee of Scientific Research;the results of their efforts are
published
in the form ofcomprehen-sive
monographs
of thekey
archaeological
sites in Poland. The edi-torial board of the MonumentaArchaeologica
Barbarica serieswell- known to
European
archaeologists
specialising
in Roman IronAge
is alsoplaced
in the Museum. Of fourteen titles from this seriesalready
published
six were writtenby
Museum staff.The next field of
activity
pursued
by
the Museum is disseminationofknowledge
onarchaeological
heritage
and education. Apermanentexhibition on Polish
prehistory,
thoroughly
modernisedrecently
by
deploying
state-of- the-art audiovisual solutions, will soon begiven
also a fulI version inEnglish.
Two other permanent exhibitions intended tocomplement
the school curriculum are ''ABC ofRoman-esque"
and ABC of "Gothic Architecture".Finally,
there is astanding
exhibition which
highlights
the Late Bronze fortified settlement atBiskupin
- the best knownarchaeological
site in Poland. The StateArchaeological
Museum has thelargest
archaeological
finds storage
facility
in Poland - theStorage
and Research Unit atRybno
in western Mazowsze, about 70 km to the west of Warsaw. Seven storage houseshelp
store mass material such as pottery andflints,
fragments
of timber structures etc. There is also a smalIeon-servations
workshop
and accommodation of museum staff members andarchaeologists
from other institutions who visitRybno
tostudy
the collections.
Every
year the Museumorganises
a series of temporaryexhibi-tions
drawing
on its own collections andplaying
host to exhibitionsfrom museums across Poland and abroad. One of these was the
highly
successful "BetweenMycenae
and the Baltic"brought
by
theEast Slovak Museum in Ko?ice, a year later, the exhibition "Vandals
-Keepers
of the Amber Route',developed
incooperation
with theArchaeology
Institute of Marie Curie-Sk?odowskaUniversity
inLublin, turned out to be a sensation. In 2006 a
major
event was thepresentation
of authentic artefacts fromTroy
as part of theexhibi-tion
"Troy
- the Dream of Heinrich Schliemann"prepared
in coop-eration with the Berlin Muzeum fur Vor- undPruhgeschichte.
Thefollowing
year saw theopening
of the exhibition "Treasures ofAncient Latvia" - the first ever
presentation
in Poland of the richarchaeological
heritage
of this Balticrepublic.
As in the past also now the State
Archaeological
Museumeon-tinues to engage in
lively
excavationactivity.
In the first decades of the 215t century it ran 4-9 excavationcampaigns
every yearinves-tigating
Late Palaeolithic toEarly
Medieval sites in Central and NEPoland. Under the Polish law this is the main method of
acquiring
collectionsby
the Museum since allarchaeological
artefacts areproperty of the State and all commerce in them is
illegal.
Most ofthe
investigations
were commissionedby
and funded from there-sources of the Provincial
Inspector
of Monuments and from theresources of the
newly
initiatedoperational
programs of theOne of the most
significant
events ever for the Museum was theopening
in December 2007 of the exhibition "Treasures of theMid-dle
Ages"
organised
from the collections of the Medieval andMod-ern
Age
Department
of the Museum. In the summer of 2008 thisdisplay
was viewedby
atruly
impressive
number of visitors at theWikinger
Museum in Haithabu - more than 109 000guests in
just
three months. There are
plans
to take this exhibition to other venuesin Poland and abroad, eg
Riga,
Berlin andPrague.
at all to sustain the model
represented
by
our institution in the past.By
this I mean, first of all, the scientificactivity
of the museum.Perhaps,
archaeologieal
investigation
in its broad sense shouldbe-come the concern
only
ofarchaeology
institutes of universities andof the Polish
Academy
of Science? Similar views have beenexpressed
on occasion
by
representatives
of thearchaeologieal
milieu. It seemsnevertheless that scientific
analysis,
interpretation
andpublieation
ofarchaeologieal
collections, in other words, of source materials, isanatural field of
activity
ofarchaeologists
working
in museums suchas the State
Archaeologieal
Museum. Discontinuation of thisactiv-ity
would reduce the access ofarchaeologists
toarchelogieal
artefacts and increase thedisproportion
between thepublished
andunpub-lished material.
In its educational
activity
the Museum works in closecooperation
with schools.
Every
year some 2000 museum classes areorganised,
hel d on didactie
premises
of the Museum and involve eg, themak-ing
of pottery and beads, basieweaving
techniques,
and coin -mak-ing.
Every
year the Museum opens its doors to some 50 000visi-tors - 80% of them children and
teenagers. The
danger
posed
by
thechangeover
from the model of aspe-cialised
archaeology
museum to an institution concernedexclu-sively
with dissemination ofarchaeology
is real.According
to someviews museums should transform into institutions whieh cater to
the tourist
industry
or even of the leisureindustry.
Increasingly
often, museums are seen to function as venues for various type of
mass events, festivals, shows, etc, some of whieh are not
compatible
with the
profile
of the museum at all. This trend has beenaffecting
also museums of
archaeology
whieh, next tofielding
presentations
of
experimental
archaeology,
have become thesetting
for there-enactment of historie al events. In addition, the
general
publie
ap-parently
accept this role of museums as the main one, happy
to leavethe
viewing
ofdisplay
galleries
to schoolchildren.Over many years the Museum staff have been involved in various
outdoor
projects
aimed atpromoting
thearchaeological
heritage.
Of these the mostpopular
arepresentations
ofexperimental
archae-ology.
They
are heldduring
thearchaeologieal
festival inBiskupin,
at the "Scientific Pienie" of Radio BIS network. and
during
the "SlavHeritage
Days".
As many other countries Poland has witnesseda
growing
popularity
of events associated with reconstruction andre-enactment of famous historie al events. The historie
building
of the Warsaw Museum and itssurroundings
provide
asetting
for oneof such re-enactments - the
taking
of the Arsenal on 29 November1830.
A
major
challenge
for the Museum is how to finance its activities. The main source of its
budget
are funds allocatedby
theself-govern-ment of the Mazowsze
province;
a smaller amount - 10-15% of thebudget
comes from tieket sales, fees, rental of facilities. Thelargest
portion
ofexpenditure
is on salaries and associated costs(health
and retirement
insurance).
Theremaining
part of thebudget
isconsumed
by building
maintenance costs, powersupply,
etc.Ulti-mately
the Museum is left withonly
a very smalI fraction to pursueits statutory activities. It must be noted however that over the last
three years the Mazowsze
provincial
self-government
has come upwith substantial
supplementary
funding
to pay for the maintenanceworks on the Warsaw
building
(the
Arsenal)
and mostpartieularly,
atRybno.
It has beenpossible
to undertake amajor
remodelling
project
on twobuildings
of theStorage
and Research Unit and installmobile storage cases in one of them. This has increased over three
fold the
capacity
of the storage unit and willpossible
in future(after
similar facilities have been installed in another
unit)
thedismantling
of four units built of timber derivative material whieh do not ensureproper storage conditions. AIso in recent years the Museum was able
to secure resources from the Mazowsze self- government to finance
the
organisation
of exhibitions mentioned earlier, as well as themajor
modernisation of its ConservationsDepartment
andpurchase
of electronie
equipment
for the Museum.The next
question
whieh needs to be asked is about the natureof the
displays,
both permanent and temporary. Arethey
toeon-tinue as asort of an ordered
(but
probably
somewhatboring)
lectureon distant
people
and events,arranged
by
culture andchronology?
Or would it be
enough
to focus, in greater detailthough,
only
onkey
events such as transition from thehunter-gatherer
to thefarm-ing
and stockbreeding
economy, or on theorigins
ofearly
medievalstatehood, or, in asimilar manner, on certain processes such as
evo-lution of the
funerary
rite from the dawn of humanity
until the MiddleAges?
Obviously
it ispossible
to pose morequestions
of thiskind. And it is not easy to find an answer to them.
In the com
ing
years one ofimportant
projects
for the Museumwill be to
expand
itsrelatively
smalIdisplay
space. There areplans
to relocate the Museum
library
from the northern to the easternwing;
this would make access for visitors from outside the Museummuch easier. A new permanent exhibition would be housed in the
rooms on the first floor of the northern
wing.
In this way, room willhave been
gained
for the temporary exhibitions on theground
floor.This
project
calls for wide-scaleremodelling
works and seriousoutlays
on the newequipment
for thelibrary.
Another
pressing
issue is how to utilize the finecourtyard
of theMuseum
building
seriously
devastated in the wake ofrepair
works made to the easternwing
during
the late 1970s.According
toa
preliminary
architecturalstudy
the entirecourtyard
is to bepro-vided in future with an
underground
level whieh will accommodate educational facilities, a lecture and filmviewing
hall, cloakrooms,reception
rooms, etc. This should open up newpotential
forMu-seum activities,
particularly
during
thespring-summer
season,making
itpossible
to stage open air events and concerts in the 're-claimed'courtyard.
Thecourtyard
will come to function as a natu-raI
connecting
unit between the main entrance to the Arsenal fromD?uga
street(rather,
than at present, from the Krasi?skiPark)
anddisplay
rooms in the northernwing.
Obviously,
both theseprojects
require
suitablesupplementary
financing
by
theprovincial
self-government.
The future prospects of the Warsaw Museum
depend
on externalfactors, eg, the state
policy
on culture, nationalbudget,
economie situation etc, but also on theactivity
andplans
of the Museum. Asaresult of the administrative reform of 1
January
1999 most museumshave
passed
intocharge
of thenewly
enactedself-governments.
TheState
Archaeologieal
Museum also, a government institution fromthe time its
inception,
passed
into thecharge
of theprovincial
Ma-zowsze
self-government
authority.
Thisself-government
hasfully
accepted
the direction and the all-Polish character of the Museumsactivity.
It is alsofavourably
disposed
toward the Museums needs invarious fields, whieh has contributed eg, to the
improvement
of the level of techniealequipment
of the Museum and also tointensifica-tion of exhibition
activity,
as was noted earlier.Another
important
question
is whether now that we have entered21 st century and Poland has
joined
theEuropean
Union it ispossible
It seems that the future of a museum such as ours should
eon-tinue to base on the present model of
activity
enhanced,less,
by up-to-date
educational and outreachactivity.
Onedifficulty
is that museums are
by
their natu re conservative institutions. In thecase of
archaeology
museums an additional factor is thatthey
addto their
holdings
(primary
task of everymuseum)
in the process of research work such as excavation. Thisimposes
a certain mindseton many
archaeologists-museum
specialists
who rate researchactiv-ity
above all other forms ofdisseminating
archaeology.
Even so, letme venture my
opinion
thatdespite
all the reservations andcircum-stances outlined here
specialised
archaeology
museums such as theWarsaw Museum should retain their
special
form as the most endur-ing
institutions which standguard
over ourarchaeological
herit-age.
