PROF. DR HAB.ADAM MALICKI (7 I 1907—27 V 1981)
W połowie 1981 roku zmarł w Lublinie jeden z założycieli wydawnic
twa Annales Universitatis Mariae Curie-Skłodowska, pierwszy i długo
letni — do końca życia — redaktor sekcji geograficznej (Sekcja B).
W Zmarłym geografia polska traci wybitnego swego przedstawiciela.
Profesor Adam Malicki był geografem fizycznym, przede wszystkim geo
morfologiem, ale Jego twórczość naukowa jest tematycznie bardzo roz
legła. Prace geomorfologiczne koncentrowały się głównie wokół proble
matyki lessu, w którego badaniach ma duże zasługi naukowe i organiza
cyjne, dalej krasu (w Jugosławii i w Polsce), erozji wodnej i innych.
Jego zainteresowania obejmowały także geografię ogólną (m. in. podręcz
nik akademicki Wstęp do geografii) i historię geografii. W dorobku Pro
fesora Adama Malickiego znalazły się też prace z innych dziedzin geo
grafii, jak klimatologia, geografia osadnictwa, toponomastyka, kartome- tria i inne.
Wszechstronność zainteresowań Adama Malickiego szła w parze z no
watorstwem koncepcji. Swoimi poglądami wyprzedzał w wielu przypad
kach późniejszy rozwój danych działów geografii. Charakteryzowało Go wielkie wyczucie istoty geografii. Był zwolennikiem jedności geografii.
Dał temu wyraz m. in. w jednym z ostatnich swych artykułów pisząc
„[...] ci którzy nie chcą pogodzić się z myślą o jedności geografii [...] nie zdają sobie sprawy z tego dziwnego faktu, że jedynie geografia dostąpiła tego wątpliwego zaszczytu, że jakoby nie stanowi jednolitej, określonej dyscypliny naukowej”.
Profesor Adam Malicki — uczeń E. Romera, wychowanek Instytutu Geografii Uniwersytetu Jana Kazimierza we Lwowie, był po II wojnie światowej jednym z założycieli Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie, gdzie przez 37 lat działalności pełnił różne funkcje akade
mickie, był prodziekanem wydziału (1947/48) i prorektorem uniwersytetu (1951—1954). Był przede wszystkim profesorem uniwersyteckim i nie
kwestionowanym twórcą lubelskiego ośrodka geograficznego. Olbrzymie są Jego zasługi na polu dydaktycznym i wychowawczym. Pod Jego kie
runkiem wykształciło się 200 magistrów geografii, 22 doktorów i 7 dokto

rów habilitowanych. Wielu spośród Jego wychowanków uzyskało tytuły profesorskie.
Naukowa sylwetka Profesora znajduje swe odbicie w redagowanych przez Niego 34 tomach Annales, które zawierają na 8983 stronach 298 ar
tykułów. Zwraca uwagę świadomie kształtowany szeroki profil wydaw
nictwa, obejmujący możliwie wszystkie dziedziny geografii i geologii, a także kierunki pokrewne, jak geobotanikę, zoogeografię, fenologię i in
ne. Taki profil wynikał zarówno ze zrozumienia potrzeb bardzo zróżnico
wanego kręgu odbiorców na świecie, jak i z pojmowania istoty geografii jako nauki z natury swej bardzo rozległej i wielokierunkowej.
Testament po zmarłym Profesorze Adamie Malickim to nie tylko testament naukowy — myśli i idee geograficzne, ale także testament mo
ralny — pamięć Człowieka szlachetnego i bezinteresownego, pamięć Po- laka-patrioty.

Professor Adam Malicki, one of the founders of the Annales Univer- sitatis Mariae Curie-Skłodowska Press, the first editor of the geographical section (Section B), which function he performed for many years until the end, died in the middle of 1981 in Lublin.
The Polish geography has lost in him its outstanding representative.
Professor Malicki was a physical geographer, first of all a geomorpho
logist, however, his scientific activity was thematically very broad. His geomorphological works were concerned mainly with the problems of loess, in the study of which he has great scientific and organisational merits, furthemore with karst (in Jugoslavia and Poland), water erosion and other subjects. His interests also comprised general geography (among others an academic handbook ’’Introduction to Geography”) and the history of geography. In his output there are also works from other branches of geography, such as climatology, geography of settlement, toponomastics, cartometry and others.
Professor Malicki’s versatility of interests went hand in hand with innovation of ideas. His opinions in many cases outride the later devel
opment of particular spheres of geography. He was characterised by a great intuition of the essence of geography. He was an advocate of unity of the science. He expressed it among others in one of his last articles writing ”[...] those who do not want to accept the idea of unity of geography [...] do not realise the strange fact that it is only geography that attained the doubtful honour of supposedly not making a uniform, definite scientific discipline”.

Professor Adam Malicki, a pupil of E. Romer, an alumnus of the Institute of Geography of the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów, was after World War II one of the founders of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin, where for 37 years of his activity he performed various academic functions, such as the vice-dean of the department (1947/48) and the vice-rector of the university (1951—1954). He was first of all a university professor and an unquestioned creator of the Lublin geography centre. His didactic and educational merits are immense. Under his direction 200 masters, 22 doctors and 7 assistant professors were educated. Many of his pupils received a professor’s title.
Professor Malicki’s scientific profile is reflected in the 34 volumes of the Annales edited by him, which on 8983 pages contain 298 articles.
Worthy of notice is the consciously shaped broad profile of the Press, comprising as many as possible branches of geography and geology, as well as the related studies, such as e.g. geobotanics, zoogeography, feno- logy and others. Such profile resulted from the understanding of the needs of a very differentiated circle of recipients around the world, as well as from perceiving the essence of geography as science from the very nature extensive and multidirectional.
The late Professor Malicki’s testament is not only of a scientific kind — geographical thoughts and ideas, but also of a moral one — the memory of a noble and disinterested man, of a Pole and a patriot.
