A lth o u g h carb o n is obviously th e ch eap est re d u cin g a g en t, a c arb o n -a rc fu rn ac e is necessary fo r th e re a c tio n , th e re d u c tio n te m p e ra tu re bein g in excess of 2000°C . M uch hnver te m p e ra tu re s a re possible w ith the o th e r re d u cin g a g en ts b u t th e cost of th ese su b sta n c es m ilita te s a g ain st th e successful d ev elo p m en t of th e processes.
