Foreword
The Marine Engineering Society i n Japan has lield f o u r I S M E Symposiums, during ihe period f r o m 1973 through 1990. Each o f these symposiums has been quite successftil, thanks to the many participants f r o m botli Japan and abroad and Üieir vigorous discussions o f scientific- and engineering-related topics.
In recent years, there has been increased emphasis on the quahty :uid reliability o f marine engines and related equipment systems, i n a d d i ü o n to the empliasis that lias tradiuoitilly been placed on their efficiency and durability. This lias been affected by growing needs i n areas such as polluüon-control systems to protect tlie global environment, energy-supply systems, and operating systems.
The F i f t h International Svmposium on Marine Engineering, to be held i n Yokohama. 17-21 July 1993. wiU promote the exchange of i i i f o n n a ü o n and the sharing o f experiences, and include discussions concerning the progress and future o f marine engineering, focusing on Uie theme "Towards the Higher Quaht}' and Reliabilit>^ o f Marine Enguies. Equipment and Systems." The symposium w i l l deal w i t h topics such as the following.
Pollution Free Systems Environmental Conscn-ation Robotics and Automation Systems Safety' and Man-Machine Systems Energy Conversion Systems Operation and Iiifomiation Systems
New Propulsion Systems and Power Electronics
We were pleased by the wide response f r o m experts in nimiy countries to our call for papers. However, because o f time hniitations during üic sj'mposium. there were many fine papers that could not be accepted.
Tlie \ olumes o f the Svmposium Proceedings include all the papers presented, as well as the texts o f üie Special Lecture, die tliree Kcvnotc Lectures, and Uie f o u r Panel Discussions o n Marine Diesel Engine Emissions, Advanced Energy Systems. Safct>' and Advanced Operation o f Marine Propulsion Plants, and Marine Diesel Engine Lubrication.
We hope üiese y-olumes w i l l be useful to those involved wiUi the science and technology o f manne engineering sy stems, and Ü.al Ihev w i l l SCTS'C as importmit resources f o r facilitating future developments m
Üicsc areas. It wiU giN'c us great pleasure i f they help idenüfS' problems and improve the quality and reliability of marine engineering svsteras. and otlicrwisc play a significant role in tliis field.
The publicauon o f these volumes is the result of Uie helpful efforts o f many o f our colleagues. We wish especiallv to thank die members o f the E x c c u ü v e Conunittee, particularly P r o f S. Hayama. P r o f M . Horigome. P r o f M . Osakabe. Prof H . Okada, P r o f Y . Hatanaka. P r o f S, Iwaiiioto. P r o f E. Nakagawa. Prof T Takamasa, M r . Y . A o k i . Prof Y . Suzuki. M r . T.
