1. Presented data - unless otherwise stated - refer to the Wroclaw voivodship.

2. Data are presented following the European Classification of Activities (EKD) scheme, replacing Classification of the National Economy (KGN) used so far. EKD, elaborated on the basis of the publication of the European Communities Statistical Office EUROSTAT, is an objective classification and it is systematized collection of types of socio-economic activities in the national economy.

Data grouped by sections, divisions and - in some cases - by groups were prepared on the basis of the second edition of the EKD introduced by the instructions No 83 of the CSC (Central Statistical Office) President of December 31, 1990 (Official Gazette of the CSC, No 30, entry 151) coming into force on January 1, 1991.

Additionally used grouped: category Industry refers to the EKD sections: Mining and quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity, gas and water supply.

3. Informations for some groups of units were introduced according to the scope of statistical surveys by the size of employment as of November 30 of year preceding survey.

Economic units were grouped into the following groups:

- small - with employment 5 people and less,

- medium - with employment from 6 to 20 people, and from 6 to 50 people in sections: Mining and quarrying, Manufacturing and (to 1992) Construction,

- large - with employment over 20 people, and in sections: Mining and quarrying, Manufactu­

ring and (to 1992) Construction over 50 people.

4. Units by form of ownership are classified in the following sectors:

- public sector includes units of state ownership (of State Treasury and state legal persons), communal ownership and mixed ownership with a public sector capital majority,

~ private sector includes units of private domestic ownership, private foreign ownership and mixed ownership with a private sector capital majority.

5. Data - unless otherwise stated - are presented in accordance with organizational status of the national economy.

6. Data according to sections, divisions and groups of the EKD are compiled - unless otherwise stated - by the enterprise method.

Enterprise method (subjective) means, that the whole units of national economy are accepted as a basis of grouped all data describing their activities by classification levels and territorial arrangements.

When statistical data, grouped by the enterprise method, include informations about components of units of the national economy (auxiliary units of budgetary units, establishments, foundation), which carry out other activities than mother unit, general notes to the chapters of Yearbook or notes to tables inform of it.

7. Units of the national economy are understood as legal persons, independent organi­

zational units without status of legal personality and natural persons carrying out economic activities.

Economic units are understood as units carrying out economic activities, that is, producing goods and services aimed at drawing a profit and on the account of the unit carrying out the activity. There are not understood as economic units: budgetary units, research and develop­

ment institutions, higher schools, foundations, social, political, union organisations and others which are formed to organize social, cultural and political life or to carrying out the state tasks.

8. Grouped of products was prepared on the basis of the fourth edition of the SWW (Systematic List of Products) introduced on January 1, 1991 (including future changes).

Grouped of commodities in the chapter "Foreign trade" was prepared also in accordance with Polish Combined Nomenclature (PON) introduced on January 1, 1994.

9. Grouped of employment and councillors by occupational groups was prepared on the basis of classification of occupations introduced by instructions of Minister of Labour and Social Policy of April 20, 1995 (Official Gazette No 48, entry 253)

10. Following the introduction of the law on denomination of Polish currency (Official Gazette No 84, entry 386) and the instructions No 28 of the CSO President of October 31, 1994 (Official Gazette of the CSO, No 15) on adjusting the statistics to the law, data on value basis are presented in the new currency unit (the denomination ratio is 10000:1).

11. Data at current prices refer to factual (of a given year) income gained, expenditure beard or value of production or services. In tables, in which the price explanation is not given, statistical data are at current prices.

12. Relative figures (indices, percentages) are compiled, as a rule, on the basis of absolute figures expressed with more precision than those given in tables.

13. Index numbers - in cases of classification changes, changes in methodology and changes in system of constant prices for given periods - are compiled according to the chain method.

14. While computing per capita figures (per 1000 population, etc.) for data as of the end of a year (for example number of telephones, number of physicians) the number of population is taken as of December 31, whereas data describing the magnitude of the phenomenon within a year (for example vital statistics, production) - the number of population is taken as of June 30.

15. When breaking down data according to towns and villages towns include also urban units located in mixed (urban-countryside) gminas. The remaining parts of such gminas are

classified as villages.

16. Methodological notes concerning the basic concepts and methods of data processing are given in the general notes for the respective chapters.

17. Due to data processing technology, in selected cases the totals of elements may differ from the figure "grand total".

18. In regard to the sections names of the EKD abbreviations are used:
