in the current year, the 50th volume of the

den-tal journal published in the post-war Wrocław will be issued. Founded in 1960 from the initiative of Prof. tadeusz owiński, the magazine was orig-inally called “Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatolo-giczny”. in that time, it was the second (after the “Czasopismo Stomatologiczne”) scientific journal of dentistry in Poland. Until 2001, the magazine was published by the lower Silesia Branch of the Polish Stomatological association, and after that date by Wrocław Medical University and Polish Stomatological association. the round anniversa-ry brings an opportunity to present the magazine’s

history and to reminisce about the authors and continuators working for the “dental and Medi-cal Problems”.

the magazine’s history has been divided into three periods: the period of 1960–1971 with Prof. ta-deusz owiński as the editor-in-chief; the period of “Wrocławska Stomatologia” in the years 1972–2001, and the period of the “dental and Medical Prob-lems” since 2002.

The years from 1960 to 1971

the 15th anniversary of dentistry in the

post-war Wrocław was the opportunity to launch the first jubilee volume of the “Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatologiczny” (Fig. 1). the founder, Prof. ta-deusz owiński, was the editor-chief of the in-augural issue of annals (Fig. 2). a select editorial board included the future professors: adam Masz-telarz dMd, Stanisław Potoczek Md dMd, Fran-ciszek Mraz dMd, tadeusz Pawela Md dMd. the cover design, which lasted until 2001, was done by Stanisław Szuba Md dMd. the magazine was published by the lower Silesia Branch of the Polish Stomatological association. Prof. tadeusz owiński launched the magazine with a

reminis-cent article summarising fifteen years of academ-ic dentistry in the post-war Wrocław. in that time, the Wrocław’s dentistry was rebuilding the head-quarter on the foundation of the institute of den-tistry working prior to the war, recreating teach-ing and scientific personnel, as well as organisa-tional structures within the university and the Polish Stomatological association. the scientific part of that volume consisted of 7 papers: Fran-ciszek Mraz described the case of healing over the jaw cavernous tumour, Kazimiera and ta-deusz Pawela presented a topic of third molars pu-rulent inflammation, alicja Badurowa discussed a treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis with the use of adrenal cortex preparations, Stanisław Potoczek discussed the popularisation principles

of oral hygiene, anna ankiewicz-Majewska pre-sented an application of fluorescence in dentistry, Henryk Schnitzer and leopold Meloch evaluated the usefulness of a complete denture, and Bogumił and andrzej Wołczański described a technique for preparing a crown-root inlay from a self-curing material.

after two years of break, the second vol-ume of the “Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatolo- giczny” was launched in 1963. it contained papers presented during the Vi congress of the Section of dental Surgery PtS. the last, third volume of the “Wrocławski Biuletyn Stomatologiczny” was issued in 1964. it was composed of 32 papers, with a dominance of dental surgery topics, among oth-ers, one of the first papers of tadeusz Pawela on eosinophilic granuloma.

the annual magazine changed the title into “Wrocławska Stomatologia” in 1965 (Fig. 3). a se-lect editorial board included: editor-in-chief Prof. tadeusz owiński Ph.d., editorial secretary: sistant Professor Stanisław Potoczek Ph.d., as-sistant Professor adam Masztalerz Ph.d., Noe-mi Wigdorowicz-Makowerowa Ph.d., assistant Professor tadeusz Pawela Ph.d., Bogumił Płonka dMd, Ph.d. and Franciszek Mraz dMd, Ph.d. in that year, the editorial policy regarding the re-view process was presented for the first time. in the years 1966/1967, the joined jubilee issue

sum-marizing the first twenty years of dentistry in the post-war Wrocław was published. Since 1970, the abstracts of papers in russian have not been any more required.

in the years from 1966 to 1971, over 30 papers were issued regularly. in 1971, even the double issue (the first issue was dedicated to a topic of teeth re-moval in the context of general medicine and tech-nical dental aspect) was published. in that period, the authors of all papers were the academic mem-bers of Medical University. apart from typically dental topics, the magazine covered also the prob-lems of histopathology, anaesthesiology and an-thropology. the papers, which in the future will be-come the greatest achievements of Wrocław’s den-tistry School, are presented through the pages of the “Wrocławska Stomatologia” [2]. Certainly they include publications of Prof. Noemi Wigdorowicz- -Makowerowa dedicated to fluoride prophylaxis for caries, papers of Prof. Stanisław Potoczek on the re-lationship between general diseases and periodon-titis, first papers of Prof. adam Mastalerz on ortho-dontic treatment with the use of a fixed appliance, and papers of assistant Professor Bogumił Płonka Ph.d. presenting an original Wrocław’s method for the treatment of endentulous patients.

The years from 1972 to 2001

the editor-in-chief of the “Wrocławska Stoma-tologia” changed in 1972. this function was taken by Prof. Stanisław Potoczek (Fig. 4). Prof. tadeusz owiński (editor of the training department) and Prof. adam Mastalerz (editor of the Scientific de-partment) became vice-editors-in-chief. Upon res-ignation of Prof. tadeusz owiński from the edito-rial function in 1975, the newly selected editoedito-rial board, which would manage the “Wrocławska Sto-matologia” for the next 20 years, was chosen. the board included: editor-in-chief Prof. Stanisław Po-toczek, vice-editor-in-chief Prof. adam Masztalerz, editorial secretary Zofia Masztalerzowa dMd, Ph.d., until 1993 Halina Pawiłowska dMd, Ph.d., in the years 1994–1995 Barbara Zasłonka dMd, Ph.d. Until 1990, the editorial board includ-ed only the senior academic staff members from Wrocław: Prof. anna Majewska, Prof. Noemi Wi-godorowicz-Makowerowa (until 1985), Prof. Jerzy Brzeziński, Prof. Feliks Ćwioro, Prof. Feliks Mraz, Prof. Bogumił Płonka and Prof. tadeusz Pawela (until 1979).

in that time, most of the published papers were of authors from Wrocław (over 90% of pub-lications). the magazine was a place for publica-tions representing the Wrocław’s dentistry School. they included among others: papers of Prof.

mi Wigdorowicz-Makowerowa on stomatogna-thic system dysfunctions, papers of Prof. Stanisław Potoczek team on biochemistry of saliva, papers of Prof. adam Masztalerz on orthodontic diag-nostics and treatment, and papers of Prof. Feliks Ćwioro on orthognathic surgery.

the annals were divided into thematic parts: dental and maxillofacial surgery, orthodon-tics, prostheorthodon-tics, conservative dentistry, perio-dontics and other papers and reports. in 1983, the “Wrocławska Stomatologia” obtained the iSSN 0239-4596 signature [3].

the publication of papers dedicated to pain in 1979 and presenting a point of view of dentists, but also of the psychiatric, laryngologist and pharma-cologist is recognised as an innovative approach.

in 1983, the papers of Prof. Jerzy Brzeziński ex-plaining the role of Meckel’s cartilage in the proc-ess of jaw growth were published in the magazine. in 1984, four review papers of Prof. tadeusz Pawe-la on the tooth roots extraction and the conduc-tion anaesthesia were issued. in the years 1987– 1990, epidemiological papers dedicated to occur-rence of caries and periodontium diseases in the context of clinical trials conducted in 1986 for the World Health organisation were published. these papers were performed by team of doctors from department of Conservative dentistry.

Many annals had an anniversary and jubilee character. the following anniversaries were cel-ebrated: the 30th anniversary of the division of

dentistry of Wrocław Medical University in 1977,

the 35th anniversary of Wrocław Medical

Univer-sity in 1980, the 25th anniversary of the magazine

“Wrocławska Stomatologia” in 1985, the 50th

anni-versary of the Polish Science in Wrocław in 1995, and the 50th anniversary of the division of

den-tistry in Wrocław in 1998 [3]. Zygmunt Szpilka Ma, director of Zakład Graficzny Poczty i tele-komunikacji we Wrocławiu had major merits of the issuance of “Wrocławska Stomatologia”.

Since 1991, the academic staff members from outside Wrocław, at the beginning only from Poznań, Gdańsk and Białystok, have joined the ed-itorial board, as well as Prof. Urszula Kaczmarek and Prof. Marek Ziętek since 1993. Since 1994, the technical supervision over the magazine has been passed to the department of Publishing of Medi-cal University.

Upon retirement of Prof. Stanisław Potoc-zek and his resignation from the function of edi-tor-in-chief on december 16th, 1995, the new

edi-torial board of the “Wrocławska Stomatologia” was chosen, consisting of: editor-in-chief Prof. Bogu-mił Płonka (Fig. 5), vice-editor-in-chief Henryk Kaczkowski dMd, Ph.d., editorial secretary Hali-na Panek dMd, Ph.d. and Sławomir Makacewicz dMd, Ph.d. one year later, the first colourful fig-ures appeared in the “Wrocławska Stomatologia”, and since 1998, a format of the magazine has come back to B5. in the years 1998–1999, a joined volume of the magazine was published containing, among others, historical articles on the development of the department of dental Prosthetics, department of orthodontics, department of Maxillofacial Surgery and department of Conservative dentistry. For 40th

anniversary of the “Wrocławska Stomatologia” in 2000, Prof. Stanisław Majewski from Kraków wrote a special editorial article entitled Alma Mater Jagiel

lonica kolebką polskiej stomatologii uniwersyteck iej (alma Mater Jagiellonica – the place where the

Polish academic dentistry began).

Upon retirement of Prof. Bogumił Płonka and his resignation from the function of editor-in-chief in 2001, tomasz Konopka dMd, Ph.d. be-came a new editor-in-chief, and it was him to issue the last annals of the magazine under the name of “Wrocławska Stomatologia”.

in the years from 1960 to 2001, 1335 papers were published in total in the “Wrocławski Biule-tyn Stomatologiczny” and then in the “Wrocławska Stomatologia”. they consisted of: 346 (25.9%) of original papers, 532 (39.8%) of review papers, 346 (25.9%) of clinical cases and 110 (8.2%) of oth-er papoth-ers. in those years, the magazine was the main source of review papers for doctors at the time of specialisation. the “Wrocławska Stomato-logia” contained almost exclusively the articles of the academic members of faculties and institutes of the Wrocław Medical University. it is a perma-nent contribution to the academic achievement of Polish dentistry.

The years from 2002 to 2012

in 2001, from the initiative of Prof. leszek Paradowski, the former rector of Wrocław Med-ical University, a character of the magazine was changed into definitely more scientific and

in the years from 2002 to 2012, 891 papers were published in total in the “dental and Medi-cal Problems”. they consisted of: 490 (54.9%) orig-inal papers, 242 (27.2%) review papers, 135 (15.1%) clinical cases and 23 (2.8) other papers. a

com-parison made between a dominant type of papers published before 2002 and after this date indicates that the magazine’s profile changed from the in-structional into the scientific one, which tries to become popular also abroad.

in the years 1960–2012, 50 volumes of the den-tal journal were published in Wrocław. 2226 pa-pers were published in total: 825 original papa-pers (37%), 775 review papers (34.8%) and 481 (21.6%) clinical cases. Many famous authors of Polish den-tistry started the career through the pages of the magazine. these publications enabled many au-thors to get a scientific promotion. Such situation is a practical contribution into developing Polish dentistry and dentistry as a part of medical sci-ence. it is also a reason for pride and giving thanks to people who helped us to succeed. We would es-pecially like to thank the authors of published pa-pers, because due to their work the consecutive ed-itorial boards could have worked.

the dental journal in such an academic cen-tre as Wrocław must continue to last, because we have a strong and reliable foundation on which to grow.
