CONCENTRAZIONE DELLE SOLLECITAZIONI ATTORNO AI FORI DUOMO NE! MADIERI DI
NAVI BULK CARRIERS
- INTRODUZIONE
Pertanto sono state fatte anche in questo caso le seguenti ipotesi;
si è ritenuto di poter concentrare nei nodi tutto il carico agente sul madiere sostituendo un cer-to numero di forze concentrate al carico distribuicer-to ed alle reazioni mutue effettivamente concen-trate nei nodi (B T. R I NA. no 3);
si è supposta trascurabile la torsione dei madiere;

CONCENTRATION OF STRESSES AROUND THE MANHOLES ¡N THE FLOORS OF BULK CARRIERS
I - INTRODUCTION
The tests shown in this report had for their object to check experimentally the stress distribution particularly in the end areas of a floor of a bulk carrier, in presenceof man holes.
In order to compare the behaviour of a bored floor to that of a floor without holes, aspecimen was prepared having shape and size substantially equal to those of a floor without holes used for a previ-ous series of tests (see B. T. no. 25). Such a specimen, comprising a floor with associated two
pla-ting strips corresponding to the double bottom inner plapla-ting to the bottom and to four portions of gir-ders, is shown in fig. 1. Figs. 2 and 3 show in a schematic way the modifications made in the spe-cimens used for the present series of tests, which reproduce in scale 1.4, in Aq 42 steel, the essen-tial characteristics of the bottom of a bulk carrier, having the following size
3. Still in order to effect tests comparable to the results obtained for a floor without holes, load con-ditions similar to those the specimen of fig. 1 was subject to, bave been considered.
Therefore, the following hypothesis were advanced in this case too:
it was believed possible to concentrate in the intersection the whole load acting on the floor, substituting a certain number of cencentrated forces for the distributed load and the mutual reac-tions actually concentrated in said intersecreac-tions (B.T. RINA. no. 3);
the floor twist was presumed as negligible;
the fixed joint effect produced by the frame and the torsional stiffness of the side tanks, was re-produced by means of arms overhenging out the two ends of the specimen, as shown in fig. 1 and 3.
2 - EXECUTION OF THE TESTS
4. The tests on the two specimen (figs. 2 and 3) were effected in two different load conditions, in the first of which the arms overhen ging out of the specimen were not loaded.
Fig. 4 shows the distribution of the applied loads and the diagrams of the shear andbending
mo-ment in such conditions.
5. The choice of such a load condition means that the torsional stiffness of the side tanks is consi-dered as negligible in the ship, which is true when the holds are very long, or when said tanks are not present.
6. In the second load condition a known force was applied to the side arms of the specimen, so as to cause in the end portion of the floor, correspondingly to the base of the slanting wall of the side tanks, a fixed joint moment equal to 0,5 times the perfect fixed joint moment in said section. The

loads and the diagrams o/the bending moment and shear in said second load condition are shown in
fig. 5.
The series of tests were effected in the above-described load conditions. Said first series of tests is preliminary to the second one as the relevant specimen is not provided with the lightening hole in the area under test. This circumstance is substantially equal to that shown in the mentioned report. That since, as it could be expected, and on the other hand was confirmed by the tests, the presence of such holes outside of the area checked, does not alter in said area the stress distribu-tion, owing to the distance of the first hole, with respect to the distribution obtained in complete absence of holes in the floor board.
- TESTING APPARATUS
The deformation condition in the various points was checked by means of electric strain gauges. Simple strain gauges were applied in facing couples on the two faces of the plates of the double
bottom plating and bottom. Other simple strain gauges were applied about at half length, in the floor web, in order to check the diagram form of the bending stress in said area. The complete scheme of the simple strain gauges is shown in fig. 6.
The simple strain gauges allowed to check that the behaviour of the stresses in the two web
pla-tes was corresponding, within acceptable differences, to the one concerning a beam subject to a
straight bending.
In the specimen used for the preliminary tests, shown in fig.2, strain gauge rosettes were arran-ged, facing each other on the two faces of the floor board, in the positions denoted in fig. 7.
In' the second specimen shown in fig. 3, in the same area which however here was provided with a man hole, were arranged 52 strain gauges rosettes, still in pairs, and further 12 simple strain gau-ges provided along the edge of said hole, on the plate thickness, in order to check the tangential stresses. The scheme of said rosettes and simple strain gauges is shown in fig. 8.
4 - RESULTS OF THE PRELIMINARY SERIES OF TESTS
(WITHOUT LIGHTENING HOLE AT THE END OF THE FLOOR (see fig, 2)
The values of the strains checked in this first group of preliminary tests, as well as those con-cerning the relevant principal stresses, are shown in tables i and 2 relating to the first and second load conditions respectively.
Said tables show
- in column l'the number of the rosettes pairs;
- in columns 2, 3 and 4. the values of the three straing E1.

- in columns 6 and 7: the value of the lowest and highest principal stresses and

,
I risultati di questo secando gruppo di prove sono stati riportati anche in diagramma allo scopo di confrontarli in modo più evidente con i risultati delle prove precedenti. Le seguenti coppie diii-gure rappresentano per la prima e rispettivamente per la seconda condizione di carica sopradefinite: - le figure 9 e 10 le curve isostatiche;
- in column 8.' the value the double ofangle p formed by the dz rection of CYpmax and the
horizon-tal direction.
5 - RESULTS OF THE TESTS WITH THE MAN HOLE
In this case too several tests in the same conditions were effected and from the relevant values o/the strain g was calculated an average value shown in tables 3 and 4, relating to said first and second load conditions respectively.
From said strains were further taken the values of the principal stresses and the angle p, also shown in tables 3 and 4.
Tables 5 and 6 show the experimental values of stresses c.Y, measured
correspondin-gly to each pair of rosettes.
Tables 7 and8 show the results concerning the twelve strain gauges arranged around the hole. The results of this second group of tests were shown in diagram too, in order to be in position to compare them clearly to the ones of the previous tests. The following pairs of figures show for said first and second load conditions respectively
- figs. 9 and 10 the isostatic curves;
- figs. il and 12 the level curves of the highest principal stress 0pmax - figs. 13 and ¡4 the level curve o/the lowest prind pal stress
- figs. 15 and 16 the distribution of the tangential stress along the hole edge.
For such a group of tests relating to the floor provided with man hole at the two ends, were also
reported the values of ;
, obtained experimentally, together with the corresponding theo-nc values calculated by the basic theory of bent beam,' particularly the following pairs of figures show the above-cited load conditions:- figs. 17 and 18.' the comparison between the measured G and the theoric one defined as above
sa id,
- figs. 19 and 20: only the values of the measured
- figs. 21 and 22.' the comparison between the measured and the theoric one defined as above said. The above-mentioned report, concerning tests effected on a floor not provided with man holes, shows that particularly high values of the principal stresses occur close to both the base of the slanting wall of the side tanks, and the point where the concentrated load is applied. In view of that it was expected that the opening of a man hole would have caused an increase in the measured highest principal stresses; the measure results have confirmed such hypothesis, however showing a tensional condition much more serious than what expected, as shown in figs. 9 to 22.
With particular reference to figs. 9 and 10, the isostatics are noted to maintain a slanting course close to 450 with respect to the longitudinal axis o/the floor. Obviously, such isostatics approach to one another correspondingly to the four connections of the lightening hole, and to such an ap proa-ching corresponds a considerable increase of the stresses along the hole edge and close thereto.
In figs. 9, 11, 13 and 15 it may be seen that the highest principal stress Gpmax reaches in some points, far from he hole edge, values which are about four times the highest ones ascertained
= 493 kg/cm
a = - 38 kg/cm
846 kg/cm 846 kg/cm
in the same area of the specimen without the man hole, for the corresponding load condition (see ta-ble i and 2). Further, strain gauges 3, 4 and 10 allowed to measure, correspondingly to the hole ed-ge, stresses comprised between 1828 and 2278 kg/ cm2
The highest absolute values of 0pmin ae found, still on the hole edges, close to strain gauges 12 and 6, with -2339 and - 3073 kg/cm respectively in the remaining portion of the tested area, the highest absolute values of pmin are found close to rosettes 25 and 26.
21. Figs. 10, 12, 14 and 16 concerning the second load condition of the floor show the highest values of 0pmax' this time too, along the hole edge and close thereto, correspondingly to strain gauges 4 and 10(2549 and 2691 kg/cm respectively) androsettes 20 and7.
in the remaining portion of the tested area, the highest values of 0proax are found near roset-tes 25 and26, that is near the base of the slantingwall of the side tanks, as it happened for the tests of first specimen shown in fig. 2.
The absolute values of pmjn are everywhere relatively small except for those measured along
the hole edge near strain gauges 1, 6, 7 and 12, where values comprised between -1757 and-2462
kg/cm2 respectively are reached.
22, In figs. 17 and 18 it may be seen that the experimental diagrams of o differ from the theoric form of the triangular diagram on the right and left of the hole assuming a particular S form. Howe-ver, at the lower and upper ends the measured values
of o,
approach the theoric values except for rosettes 25 and 26 such a difference being caused by the change in section of the beam,With reference to figs. 19 and 20 the experimental values of G are particularly high where the values of the principal stresses are higher particularly in the nearest areas of the hole edge. El-sewhere they tend to become nul except for the base of the slanting wall of the side tanks.
Finally, figs. 21 and 22 show once more a good conformity between the theoric values of the measured ones in the dzsrrzbutzon of
CONCLUSIONS
25 A corn paison between the results obtained in the two conditions the floor was considered in (that is in absence and presence of a man hole) allows first to see that the stress distribution va-ries considerably only near the hole edge. for an area the extent of which may be clearly seen in the above described diagrams.
26. ¡n order to value said stress increase around the hole, it is to be noted that in the intermediate vertical section of said hole the theoric values of O

The values of G were calculated at a bent beam, with section modulus of the net vertical section.
The value of corresponds to the average shear value, presuming that the shear force T is uni formely distributed over the net vertical section of the web correspondingly to the hole,

Actually, owing to the stress concentrations around the hole, the values of Y reached in both ca-ses are much higher. For instance the corresponding experimental values of G and reach in the first and second load conditions respectively the following highest absolute values:
