Wacław Borowy (1890— 1950)—o u tstan d in g historian o f Polish litera
ture, essayist and literary critic, long-tim e professor o f W arsaw U niversity, w rote several im p o rtan t book s including 18th-Century
Polish Poetry (1948), collection o f essays Gauntlets o f Stone (1932)
and Today, Yesterday (1934), and num erous studies on A dam M ickiewicz, C yprian N orw id and Stefan Ż erom ski which cam e o ut as separate b o ok s after his death. His theoretical literary credo was expressed in his 1921 bo oklet On L iterary Influences and
Dependencies and developed in later essays. He studied English
literature too. H e w rote the only Polish study on G. K. C hesterton (1929) so far, and the first Polish study on T. S. Eliot (1936). His widely read and often qu oted studies earned Borowy the re p u ta tio n o f a classic o f Polish literary criticism .
