W niniejszej Rozprawie Doktorskiej, poświęconej badaniom zmian struktury krystalicznej i elektronowej w magnetycie w okolicy przemiany Verwey'a, przedstawiono wyniki badań dyfrakcji koherentnego promieniowania X jak również rezonansowego rozpraszania promieni X. Jednoczesne pomiary intensywności niskotemperaturowego piku nadstruktury (1 1½ 2) i magnetycznej podatności zmiennoprądowej pozwoliły obserwować przemianę Verwey'a zarówno na skalę mikroskopową jak i makroskopową. Wyniki obserwacji przemiany w funkcji czasu (w stałej temperaturze) pokazały, że przemiana fazowa obserwowana za pomocą podatności zmiennoprądowej i plateau temperatury, związanego z ciepłem utajonym próbki, poprzedza przemianę strukturalną widzianą za pomocą piku nadstruktury. Niskotemperaturowa faza powstaje w formie małych ziaren, które rozrastając się i łączą w końcowej fazie przemiany, jednocześnie domeny strukturalne konkurują ze sobą. Wyniki badań uporządkowania ładunkowego i orbitalnego oraz towarzyszącej przemianie Verwey'a dystorsji sieci wyraźnie pokazują ich rozprzężenie. Każdy z tych procesów wykazuje inną ewolucję temperaturową. Takie zachowanie jest również charakterystyczne dla magnetytu niestechiometrycznego i domieszkowanego cynkiem. Na podstawie wyników rezonansowego rozpraszania promieniowania X zaproponowano scenariusz według którego zachodzi przemiana Verwey'a w magnetycie.
This thesis is focused on studies of the crystal and electronics structure changes in the vicinity of the Verwey transition in magnetite. The results of the coherent x-ray diffraction and resonant x-ray scattering experiments are presented here. Simultaneous measurements of the low-temperature (1 1½ 2) superstructure peak intensity and magnetic AC susceptibility allowed us to observe the Verwey transition at both the microscopic and macroscopic scales. Results of the observation of the transition as a function of time (at constant temperature) showed, that the phase transition observed by AC susceptibility and the temperature plateau associated with the latent heat of the sample, precedes the structural transformation seen by the superstructure peak. The low-temperature phase arises in a form of small grains that grow at the transition and finally merge at the final stage of the transformation, with the structural domains competing with each other. The results of the charge and orbital orderings as well as the accompanying structural transformation clearly show their decoupling at the Verwey transition. Each of these processes shows a different temperature evolution. This behavior is also characteristic of nonstoichiometric and zinc-doped magnetite. Basing on the results of resonant x-ray scattering a scenario of the Verwey transition in magnetite is proposed.
