Geochronological determinations may yield im~. portant information not only on the so called rock ages but also on the ra.te of geodynamic processes, provided the sampling pattern expresses a ' clearly defined problem to be solved. The point is illustra-ted by a review of papers in which geochronologi-ca! . data were used as an argument in favour or continental drift, to estimate the rate of· .sea-floor spreading, the age of postorogenic uplift of" a moun-tain chain, and the rate of such an uplift.
