In order to maintain technical efficiency of building structures at a required level, it is necessary to properly evaluate their condition. Quite frequently, however, the only way to assess the safety of an engineering structure are geodetic measurements of displacements. For this reason, it is important for them to be determined during rest, i.e. when a structure is not subject to any external loads, including insolation.
The purpose of this study is to develop principles for eliminating the influence of thermal deformations on the results of geodetic measurements of displacements of reinforced concrete structures.
Hence, the research studies comprised four structurally different types of building structures, namely: foundations for machinery, industrial chimneys, cooling towers and dams. To prove the thesis, it was necessary to prepare models of deformations caused by thermal interactions for each of the above types of building structures. An important objective of this work was to develop universal methods of thermal deformation modeling to allow for their easy fitting to any type of a structure. In order to verify the conformity of the developed models, measurements of real structures were carried out.
The conducted studies proved that all the structures exhibited a great consistency of the observed displacements with their model values. It was also demonstrated that the observation of temperature distribution of the structure using a thermal imaging camera was very useful. However, while analyzing thermograms, heat capacity of the observed structures should be be taken into account, which is especially manifested in the case of multi-flue industrial chimneys.
