Jesus, on the road to Emmaus,
your followers were frightened and alone;
you had just been put to death on a cross.
They met a man on the road leading away from Jerusalem who told them all about you
and what your presence among them meant.
They did not realize that the man
speaking and walking with them was you,
raised from the dead. When their eyes were opened and they received the gift of faith, they turned around to spread the word. We ask you to bless all
your disciples who now work as catechists in our parishes. Bless them and give encouragement to
their work, that it will have an impact upon the world. We ask all this in your name, Jesus,
our companion on the road from Emmaus.

GOSPEL REFLECTIONS
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
There is something about being first. Wheth- er it be first in line, first to be picked for the team, or the first one to finish their work, great satisfaction is achieved. Our egos love being first. It somehow sets us apart from everyone else, gives us a sense of pride and positions us to feel better than others.
When we are first, we can glory in our efforts, skills, and achievements. Isn’t that what really matters?
After all, we are taught from a very young age to be proficient, stay on top, be the best at what we do, and win the praise and esteem of others. This is the stuff that makes us successful and provides us with a comfortable, satisfying life.
Jesus wants none of it. All of the details we anguish over mean little to the kingdom of God.
You want to be first? Then, be a servant and wel- come a child. All of this is the opposite of our often vehement pursuits. If we are serious about following Jesus and living the Gospel, then we must put the needs of others before our own. If we continue to listen only to the noise of the world, we are going to continue to believe the illusions we inherit. Those illusions come in many forms, but all have things in common: me before you, being on top and not the bottom, us versus them, personal security over uni- versal harmony and peace. When are we going to learn that always striving to be the best and first is an empty pursuit in our struggle for happiness?
While satisfying our ego with this momentary boost of esteem may feel good for a moment, is it what we really desire?
If we can break from the world’s noise and create a space of sacred silence in our lives, we can begin to listen and see that we are being called in another direction. What we really desire is not the bolstering of our egos but the innocence we lost somewhere along the way. When we can be playful, joyful, and even somewhat carefree, life is good. We want our relationships to work, a place to call home, and to live peaceful lives with our sisters and broth- ers. Only a servant can do this. The servant’s prayer seeks to detach from selfconcern in order to be used by God. Rather than worrying about being first and coming out on top, we can be inspired, guided, em- powered, and led to do good works. Stop worrying about being first and put greater energy into feeling joy.

Komentarz do Ewangelii
Nauka o cierpieniu, o krzyżu, o ofierze z życia nie należy do najłatwiejszych. Uczniowie żyjący z Jezusem, który na ich oczach dokonywał rzeczy wielkich, nie byli w stanie po ludzku ogarnąć kolejnego etapu misji ich Mistrza. Cuda dokonywane przez Jezusa miały skupić uwagę na Nim (cudotwórcy). Po zwróceniu uwagi możliwe było lepsze poznanie, po poznaniu konkretne opowiedzenie się za lub przeciw Jezusowi. Prze- cież byli tacy, którzy zgorszeni odeszli. Tacy, którzy nie byli zainteresowani krzyżem, a wyłącz- nie cudami…
Każdy z nas lubi doświadczać cudów codziennego życia: pełny brzuch, zabezpieczenie finansowe, wygodne mieszkanie, stabilna praca, tytuły, sukcesy, akceptacja towarzystwa itd. Nie możemy udawać, że w mniejszym lub większym stopniu będziemy zabiegali o takie cuda życia.
Zróbmy jednak wszystko, aby na pierwszym miejscu naszego systemu wartości był cud pokory! To pokora Jezusa dała Mu siłę do wypełnienia woli Ojca – aż po krzyż. Nasza pokora ułatwi nam odnalezienie się w każdej sy- tuacji bez szwanku na duchu, dobrych oby- czajach i bez utraty wzajemnej bratniej miłości.
Jeżeli nie rozumiesz lub boisz się logiki krzyża, nie pozostawaj z tym sam, nie izoluj się! Pytaj Boga, rozmawiaj z Nim. On z miłością poprowadzi Cię w nieznane. A ty z miłością przyjmuj tych ludzi, którzy przychodzą z niepewnością do Ciebie. Od- powiadaj na pytania, nawet te najdziwniejsze…
Pamiętaj, że drobny gest – zwykłe Dzień Dobry skierowane do problematycznego sąsiada, pro- ste przepuszczenie w drzwiach krzykliwej sąsiad- ki, wyraża naszą miłość i szacunek, a nas uczy pokornego patrzenia na rzeczywistość.

Communion Fasting
Question:
Do we need to fast for one hour before Mass, or one hour before communion?
Answer:
The practice of fasting before receiving the Eucharist is a centuriesold act of devotion that was once very different than it is today. In the 1917 Code of Canon Law, for ex- ample, anyone who wanted to receive the Eucharist had to fast from midnight until the time of communion (even water and medications were forbidden). Over the follow- ing decades, the rules for the eucharistic fast were re- laxed, first by Pope Pius XII and, later, by Pope Saint Paul VI.
The current Code of Canon Law (1983) states very clear- ly: “A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medi- cine” (Canon 919, §1). And, in the case of those who are ill and the elderly, the rules are even more accommodat- ing, “The elderly, the infirm, and those who care for them can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they have eaten something within the preceding hour” (Canon 919,
§3).
So, if we strictly follow the “letter of the law,” the fast is calculated from the time of Holy Communion and not the start of Mass. However, when we remember why we fast
² it is a reminder of the deeper hungers of the spirit that our physical thirst or hunger symbolize ² we see that the issue is much bigger than simply fulfilling what is called for by Church Law and tradition. Joining fasting to our prayers and reflection before Mass is an opportunity to really center ourselves and to prepare our minds, hearts, and bodies to welcome the One we receive in the Eucha- rist.

Catechetical Sunday
The word "catechesis" means "to echo." Literally, we are to echo the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. This is not a suggestion; it is a command of our Lord. Some people are called and set apart in our
communities as catechists, those formally trained and charged with passing on the Gospel to children
and adults, inside and outside of our communities.
On Catechetical Sunday, we acknowledge them and remind ourselves of the need for formation and growth in all of us. To be a catechist is a privileged calling, and today be sure to say "thank you" to one
in your community.
However, it would be wrong on this day to only look to those bearing the NAME of catechist for an echo-
ing of good news. ALL of us are called to echo and share the Gospel message. Parents are the first and primary catechists in a child's life. But we also are important catechists in the lives of our coworkers, our spouses, our relatives, and our friends. Some say catechesis begins in the home, and while that is true,
it carries with it a parent/child connotation. But where does catechesis really begin? It begins in the
HEART. This year on Catechetical Sunday, may your heart be moved to motivate you to share with
others the good news of Jesus Christ.
Prayer for Catechists God of our fathers and mothers,
today we mark Catechetical Sunday,
the day we recommit ourselves
to teaching and forming disciples
to continue your work in this world.
In the beginning, you created man
to please you and offer you companionship.
We turned away from you
without knowing the great love you had for us.
Help us to recapture that understanding
of your love for us and for creation.
Give us wisdom to hand on to the next generation
that love you freely give us.
We ask all that is good
to come upon our catechetical leaders
and the people whom they lead to the faith.
We ask all this in the name
of the primary teacher of the faith,
Jesus the Christ.
