Transport van gesuspendeerde deeltjes in turbulente open kanaalstromingen

1. Om het transport van gesuspendeerd sediment te begrijpen is het meten van de snelheid van de vloeistofstroming op de deeltjeslocatie belangrijker dan het meten van de deeltjessnelheid [dit proefschrift].
2. Het turbulente Prandtl-Schmidt getal mist bij sedimenttransport een sterke fysische basis, omdat transport van impuls en sedimentdeeltjes
fundamenteel van elkaar verschillen [dit proefschrift].
3. Omdat sedimentdeeltjes voornamelijk door turbulente structuren
getransporteerd worden, is het noodzakelijk een beter inzicht te verkrijgen in de snelheid waarmee deze structuren zich verplaatsen [dit proefschrift]. 4. Resultaten uit onderzoek naar deeltjes in gas kunnen niet worden toegepast
op sedimenttransport onderzoek, omdat het belang van fysische processen als turboforese, preferentiële concentratie en hydrodynamische interacties voor deze twee situaties anders is [dit proefschrift].
5. Wachten op het sneller worden van de computers is op dit moment de snelste manier om een DNS uit te voeren voor een hoog Reynolds getal. 6. Mensen geven meer informatie wanneer ze een vraag stellen, dan wanneer
ze een vraag beantwoorden.
7. De focus op procesbeheersing in plaats van kunde en vakmanschap van medewerkers maakt het ISO 9001 kwaliteitscontrolesysteem vooral van belang voor lopendebandwerkers en managers.
8. De uitdrukking ‘turbulente tijden’ komt vreemd over op een
turbulentiedeskundige, omdat er hierin geen rekening met het optreden van coherente structuren.
9. Het feit dat Google Scholar bij gebruik van de zoekterm ‘penguin’ artikelen over quantum field theory hoger plaatst dan artikelen over de diersoort, toont aan dan het aantal citaties geen afdoende criterium is voor de relevantie van een artikel.
10. Om het gemiddelde niveau van de stellingen te verhogen zou het verplichte aantal verminderd moeten worden.
Deze stellingen worden opponeerbaar en verdedigbaar geacht en zijn als zodanig goedgekeurd door de promotoren prof.dr.ir. W.S.J. Uijttewaal and prof.dr.ir. G.S. Stelling.

Transport of suspended particles in turbulent open channel flow Alexander Breugem
1. In order to understand the transport of suspended sediment, it is more important to measure the fluid velocity at the particle location than the particle velocity [this thesis].
2. The turbulent Prantl-Schmidt number does not have a strong physical basis for sediment transport, because the transport of momentum and sediment particles differs strongly [this thesis].
3. Because sediment particles are mainly transported by turbulent flow structures, it is necessary to obtain more insight in the velocity, at which this structures are moving [this thesis].
4. Results from investigations to particles in gas cannot be applied to sediment transport research, because the importance of physical processes such as turbophoresis, preferential concentration, and hydrodynamic interactions differs between these two situations [this thesis].
5. Waiting for the computers to become faster is presently the fastest way to perform a DNS at a high Reynolds number.
6. People give more information when they pose a question than when they answer this question.
7. The focus on process control, rather than the capacities and the
craftsmanship of employees, makes the ISO 9001 quality control system mainly of importance for assembly line workers and managers.
8. The use of the term ‘turbulent times’ appears strange to a turbulence expert, because it does not take coherent structures into account.
9. The fact Google Scholar, when using the term ‘penguin’, ranks articles about quantum field theory higher than articles about the animal, shows that the number of citations is not a sufficient criterion for the relevance of an article.
10. To increase the average quality of the propositions, the minimal number of propositions should be decreased.
These propositions are considered opposable and defendable and as such have been approved by the supervisors ,prof.dr.ir. W.S.J. Uijttewaal and prof.dr.ir. G.S. Stelling.
