INTRODUCTION
This report gives CTOD-values for three sets of two specimens
tested at -10°C in accordance with BS 5762:1979.
The tests have been carried out on requést of the Apparaten- en
Ketelfabriek AKF BV in Goes. The tests concern:
pipe bend: OD: 773.8 mm;
WT: 29.5 mm;
radius: 2286 mm;
material: API 5L X.60; heat no.: 532718.
MATERIAL AND SPECIMENS
Three sets of two specimens have been tested.
All sets include 2 specimens.
First set: base material (specimens 317.6 - 317.16).
Second set: weld material (specimens 317.26 - 317.34).
Third set: heat affected zone (specimens 317.27 - 317.35).
According to BS 4515:1984 the tests shall be carried out on
specimens with the preferred geometry (V - 2B) of BS 5762:1979.
In practice the considered specimens showed a misalignment of the neutral axis in the bend test fixtures due to the fact of the
radius of the pipe diameter. In this case the misalignment was
over 12 nun (see fig. I). Therefore, by agreement between AKF
(Mr. v.d. Velden) and S.S.L. (Mr. Vonk) it was decided to use the
subsidiary test piece geometry W = B.
Furthermore it was decided to reduce the thickness with 3 mm by planing on both sides of the specimens (see fig. I).
The yield stress is assumed to be: base material: Uy = 413 N/mm2;
weld metal : Uy = 440 N/mm2.
The initiating notches have all been provided with integral type knife edges. The distance between the knife edges has been 6 mm.

Precracking and bend tests-have been carried out in 3-point bnding, iÎi accordance to BS. 5762: 1979.
A loo kN load-'controlled servo hydraulic testing machine has been used for the realisation of the fatigue precracking under constant amplitude loading at room temperature
The CTOD-tests have been carried out in a 350 kN load-controlled servo-hydraulic testing machine with a cryogene box
Cooling and stabilisation on the test temperature is obtained by accurately controlled liquid nitrogen injection through a solinoid valve Via a ducting system the nitrogen is distributed
homogeneously in the cryogene box, without influencing the measuring devices
The temperature is measured using thermocouples in contact with the test piece surface at the crack tip location in front and at the back side of.,the test piece.
-The test temperature for all specimens has been -10°C The tests were started at a temperature of about 1°C below the test
temperature Depending on the amount of plastic deformation the measured temperatures rose to a value between -10°C and -9.5°C at the moment of failure,.
The CODs have been measured with MTS clip gauge1 type
