Lesson plan/procedure
1 Warm-up
Interaction forms: whole class.
Duration: 5 minutes.
Teacher asks students the date Poland joined European Union (1 May 2004). Can they think of any benefits resulting from our EU membership?
2 Main stage
2.1. Introduction of the target language – presentation Interaction forms: whole class.
Duration: 5 minutes.
Teacher tells students that they will watch a short film about the rights of EU citizens. They should notice what the rights are about.
The presentation is played once through. Teacher elicits answers in open class, i.e. the right to vote and “four freedoms” (related to free movement of goods, capital, services, people, respectively).
Teacher distributes a true/false task (below) to all students. He/She asks students to read the sentences given and see if they can answer any of them. If students are not clear about vocabulary items, they should be explained at this stage (e.g. internal, vote).
The presentation is played a second time. Students work individually to complete the task.
Then the answers are checked with the whole class.
Decide if the following sentences are true or false, and tick the appropriate column.
True False 1. A person may have either Polish citizenship or European
citizenship.
2. Every Polish citizen has the right to be a candidate in elections to the European Parliament.
3. Free movement is the main element of the EU’s internal market.

2.3. Consolidation of the target language – gap-fill Interaction forms: individual, pairs, whole class.
Duration: 10 minutes.
Teacher distributes gap-fills (below) to all students. They should work individually to complete the gaps using the words from the box. Then, the answers are checked in open class.

Teacher tells students that now they need to solve the crossword puzzle using the clues. To do that, they might need to look back at the previous notes and materials.
The words used in the crossword are: country, citizenship, movement, candidate, products, freedoms, parliament, capital.
3 Closing stage
Interaction forms: whole class.
Duration: 5 minutes.
Teacher asks students if they know anyone from another EU country who came to live in Poland? Or any Pole who went to live in another EU country? What do they do?

Teacher advises students that the www.scholaris.pl website offers a computer application in the form of a multimedia dictionary presenting correct pronunciation together with
translations of words and phrases learned during the lesson.
