FEAST OF FAITH Postures of the Mass
In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for exam- ple. Standing is also an ancient posture of pray- er, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament.
When the readings begin, we sit down: a listen- ing posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is an- other posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucha- rist. And there are other ritual gestures as well—
striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person—with heart and mind, voice and body.

TOTAL ALLEGIANCE
In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenant—as a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at East- er—occupies an important place in our cy- cle of Lenten readings. The notion of cove- nant as a relationship between two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual ac- countability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would for- ever permit them familiar access as the Cho- sen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, sum- marized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a cove- nantal relationship with the Lord God re- quires an exclusive relationship, just as disci- pleship with Jesus—ritualized in baptism—
demands a total allegiance to him and none other.

przez Bractwo Słowa Bożego
Synoptycy (czyli: święci Mateusz, Marek i Łukasz) umieszczają to wydarzenie w kontekście Paschy Jezusa, tuż pod koniec Jego publicznej działalności.
Święty Jan, natomiast, opowiada o oczyszczeniu świątyni na samym jej początku – jest to drugi z sied- miu znaków, na które składa się pierwsza część jego Ewangelii (zob. J 1 – 12). Razem wzięte, te dwie nar- racje odsłaniają nam pełne przesłanie epizodu: jest on i „programem” misji Jezusa (wg wersji świętego Jana), i oficjalnym powodem Jego oskarżenia i ska- zania na śmierć (wg wersji synoptyków); co
ciekawe, choć to święty Jan relacjonuje rozmowę Jezusa z Żydami i Jego zapowiedź o odbudowie świątyni w trzy dni (synoptycy o tym milczą), święty Mateusz przywoła ją w opisie procesu Jezusa (zob.
Mt 26, 61). Zauważmy jeszcze, że każda z dwu nar- racji posługuje się innym cytatem ze Starego Testa- mentu: podczas gdy synoptycy łączą Iz 56, 7 i Jr 7, 11 (Napisane jest: Mój dom ma być domem modlit- wy, a wy czynicie z niego jaskinię zbójców!), czwarty Ewangelista nawiązuje do Ps 69, 10 (Gorliwość o dom Twój mnie pożera); możemy więc medytować nad tym, jak prorocki wyrzut (skarga, lamentacja) zamienia się w pasję (mękę podjętą przez Syna z miłości do Ojca i Jego ludu). Niech te wyjaśnienia i ciekawostki pomogą nam odczytać dzisiejszą Ewangelię w kontekście pozostałych czytań: dar Dekalogu – ujęcia prawa naturalnego przekazane- go konkretnej nacji – to spoiwo Przymierza Boga i ludzkości; Dekalog, jednakże, nie jest zbiorem prze- pisów do samodzielnego przestrzegania – natura ludzka jest nadal skażona, dlatego potrzeba świątyni i jej kultu, podczas którego odnawiana jest życiodajna więź z Bogiem, który – jedyny! – wyprow- adza z ziemi egipskiej, z domu niewoli (dosłownego i symbolicznego); Jezus doskonale wypełnił prawo dwóch tablic Dekalogu (miłości Boga i miłości bliźni- ego) oraz ustanowił nową i żywą świątynię, czyli Kościół z jego liturgią sakramentalną; Żydzi i poga- nie, którzy dołączają do tego Kościoła i uczestniczą w jego życiu, stają się świadkami i Dekalogu, i Nowego Przymierza w Jezusie Chrystusie.

SAINT FRANCES OF ROME (1384-1440) March 9
Nature and human nature—plagues and wars—turned late medieval Rome into a living hell, particularly for the sick and poor. Frances, by birth and marriage well provided for, was a de- voted wife and mother; but like Benedictine Ob- lates who, to this day, “pray and work” while liv- ing with their families and working in the world, she joined like-minded laywomen friends in minis- tering to society’s most vulnerable. Frances’ char- ity was not only “hands on” but “in home.” Her palace becoming a hospital after the plague claimed two of her three children. When her hus- band’s death ended their loving marriage of forty years, Frances joined other widowed Oblates in community. In an interesting link to the United States, our nation’s premier religious congrega- tion for women of color, the Oblate Sisters of Prov- idence, in 1833 established bonds of spiritual communion with these “Oblates of Saint Frances”

Lent — Wielki Post
Wielki Post powinien być czasem modlitwy, postu i jałmużny abyśmy mogli prawdziwie się nawrócić. Pokuta powinna polegać na umartwianiu ciała i żarliwej modlitwie oraz na czynach chrześcijańskiej miłości: jałmużnie, prze- baczeniu i pojednaniu. Praktyki te powinny pomóc nam w odpowiednim przygotowaniu do Świąt Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego poprzez odnowienie w nas postawy chrzcielnej, czyli odwrócenie się od zła i zwrócenie się całym sercem ku Bogu. Katolicy, którzy ukończyli 14 rok życia zobligowani są do powstrzymania się od spożywania pokarmów mięsnych w każdy piątek Wielki- ego Postu. Serdecznie zapraszamy i zachęcamy, aby w pełni wykorzystać nadchodzący okres Wielkiego Postu.
Throughout the entire Season of Lent the rule of abstinence from meat on Fri- days is binding upon Catholics aged 14 and onwards. During this time, we are also called to seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ’s will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ’s death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
