Magazine mastheads, the left hand side ofthis page, are not usually considered necessary

reading by the bidl< of subscribers. Little if anything clianges on tliem and if it does it

probably Ims little bearing on tlte reader. However, we would on this occasion lil<.e to

draw your attention to a new name on litis magazine's masthead.

Tlte name, Giles Clark, has actually been appearing there since October but the man

lumself finally joined the staff of Fast Ferry International in January tliis year, just in

time to have his first public outing in his new role at the High Speed Siaface Craft

Conference and Exhibition.

Giles joins us directly from Oxford University, where he spent a term on a Journalists'

Fellowship Programme, although for tlie past 11 years lie has worked on a variety of

Fast Ferry Directory 1990

For the first time our annual Fast Ferry

Directory, the seventh in the series, is

being published separately f r o m the

magazine. As usual, however, it lists

details of all companies worldwide

operating fast ferries, or awaiting

deliv-ery, at the end o f August, their fleets

and routes. For the first time, it also

includes the addresses of many of the

operators.

This year, 155 companies are

inclu-ded. This is 15 less than last year due

mainly to mergers and the listing of

most of the Chinese vessels serving

Hong Kong under one operator. The

number of vessels detailed is 562 but the

total exceeds 600 when those on order

are included.

As always, accuracy is the main

consideration and consequently several

companies, particularly in Asia, have

been deleted because we could get no

information about their current status.

Conversely, some of those deleted i n

previous years have been reinstated

because we have received confirmation

that they continue to operate.

Companies that have introduced their

first fast ferries in the past year include

Japan Ocean Cruise Line, Kyushu

Sho-sen Kaisha, Kyushu Railway Company,

Cruises, Sea-Com Corporation,

Super-cats and SuperSuper-cats Marine. Companies

that have ceased operations during the

past year include Bay State Cruises,

Hover Mirage, Hovertransport and

Real Maritima Delcruceros.

A fast ferry here is considered to be

a vessel able to carry a m i n i m u m of 50

passengers and having a f u l l load speed

capability of at least 25 knots. The

operators are listed alphabetically with

details of their fleets i n date acquisition

order. Where two dates are given, the

first is the year of construction and the

second is the year the vessel was

intro-duced by the current operator.

Metro Marine Express, Pure Pleasure

Pictured on tlie cover is Peroni, tlie first Rodriquez 37m foil assisted monohull built tliat has entered service with Aliscafi SNAV.

Above, one ofthe Jetfoil 929-117s launched by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in the past year, Pegasus, was delivered to Kyusiiu

Shosen Kaisha. Below, four from Fjellstrand, Flaggruten's 38.8m Sleipner arriving in Bergen from Stavanger as Fylkesbaatane

i Sogn og Fjordane's two 38.8m catamarans, Fjordprins and Sognkongen, and Flying Cat 40m I<:ommand0ren depart on their

journeys northward
