THE SPECIFICITY OF SKIN REACTION IN PIGS USING TRICHINELLA SPIRALIS ANTIGEN

Intradermal tests using antigens prepared from the larvae of Trichinella spiralis

and the adults of Ascaris lumbricoides were carried out on 109 pigs, none of which

were infected with Trichinella spiralis. Of these pigs, six gave a positive reaction

to the T. spira/is antigen but all these pigs also gave a very marked reaction to the

antigen prepared from Ascaris lumbricoides and it is considered that marked sensi-

tivity to Ascaris lumbricoides may confer some sensitivity to T. spiralis. Twenty

nine of the pigs examined were infected with Trichuris suis but only one reacted

with the T. spiralis antigen and it is considered that infection of pigs with this member

of the order Trichine!loidea does not confer any sensitivity to T. spiralis. Several

other pigs were infected with Oesophagostomum dentatum. and/or Metastrongylus

spp. but these infections did not appear to influence the incidence of reactions to

T. spiralis.
