Our eighth Fast Ferry Operators Direc-tory, after eight years we have finally managed to get the title right, contains just over 150 entries, virtually the same number as in the previous edition. However, the 629 vessels individually listed is 65 higher.

As usual, the directory contains de-tails of all the companies worldwide known to be operating fast ferries, or awaiting delivery, at the end of August plus their fleets and routes.

New operators, or companies re-stored to the listing following confirma-tion that they are still in business, total 29, the most notable of which include Aliscafi Scandinavia, Fast Ferries Siam,

Navigazione A l t a Italia, Nesodden Bundefjord, Royal Sealink Express and Stevns Linien.

The number of operators deleted totals 26, a few of whom have definitely closed down or withdrawn their fast ferries. Many have disappeared, though, because we have been unable to confirm that they are still operating. For the first time, companies have also been deleted because of external fac-tors. For obvious reasons, no Kuwaiti or Yugoslavian operators have been included this year.

Several companies missing because we could get no information about their current operational status are probably

still running and when their fleets are added to those included here, the num-ber of fast ferries in service outside the USSR exceèds 700 vessels.

For the purpose of the directory, a fast ferry is considered to be a craft able to carry a m.inimum of 50 passengers and having a full load speed capability of 25 knots. The operators are listed alphabetically with details of their fleets in date acquisition order. Where two dates are given, the first is the year of construction and the second is the year the vessel was introduced by the current operator. Details of multi-stop services are listed at the end of the directory. © 1991 High-Speed Surface Craft.

Pictured on the cover are die three Batservice Industrier Sea Lord 28 catamarans introduced in tlie past year by Rogaland Trafii<i:seisliap. Above, three of Naples's four major fast ferry operators represented by Caremar Rodriquez RHS 140 iiydrofoil, Navigazione Libera del Golfo FBM Marine Marinteicnii: 41m monolmli and Alilauro Marinteknii< Verkstads 41m monolmli.
