Preface

We, the chairs, are glad to present this volume of the proceedings of the 2020 edition of the VLDB Ph.D. Workshop. The workshop was co-located with the 46th International Conference on Very Large Database (VLDB 2020) and held virtually on August 31, 2020.

We assembled the technical program to give Ph.D. students an opportunity to present their research ideas in a premier international research venue. The resulting program, consisting of 14 papers accepted for presentation over 18 submissions we received, presents a representative sample of emerging topics in database research that included contributions from young researchers from America, Asia, and Europe. The program this year also included one keynote talk by Aditya Parameswara (UC Berkeley). The keynote was able to inspire and provide directions to Ph.D. students, discussing novel issues and challenges.

Due to the pandemic situation we aligned our schedule with the virtual blocks of the main conference to accommodate speakers from different time zones. Additionally, we generated a mentor-mentee mapping between authors and PC for individual feedback sessions.

We are very grateful to Magdalena Balazinska and Xiaofang Zhou, the VLDB 2020 PC chairs, and Yoshiharu Ishikawa and Christian S. Jensen the general chairs who entrusted us with this important and honoring role. Our heartfelt acknowledgement goes to the whole local and technical organizing team, for their support and help.

Finally, we would like to thank the workshop PC who did a wonderful job in writing constructive comments and selecting the papers. We believe the event has given excellent opportunities to share and exchange research ideas between Ph.D. students and more experienced researchers and promoted synergistic collaborations. We wish all participants the very best with their research!
