Free Scans Principles

Free Scans Principles are derived from the principles of the Creative Com- mons — Attribution — Share Alike license (http://creativecommons.org/
licenses/by-sa/3.0/). It is expected that in due time the principles will be superceded by Free Scans License with the same content but formulated in legalese.
You are free:
• to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the scans of the work.
In particular you are allowed to mirror the scans on your WWW site or in your digital library or repository.
• to Remix — to adapt the scans of the work.
In particular you are allowed to process the scans with image processing software, e.g. to split double pages, deskew and despeckle document etc. If the scans are accompanied by the results of Optical Character Recognition, you are allowed to correct and improve the results. You are also allowed to perform your own Optical Character Recognition from the scratch.

• Attribution.
You must preserve the original metadata provided with the scans. Ad- ditionally you have to attribute the scanned work according to general rules.
The metadata will usually identify the physical copy of the scanned work and its owner; if the copy is owned by a library, then the call number of the copy may be provided. The metadata may also specify persons or institutions responsible for scanning, i.e. those physically perfoming the scans and, if appropriate, those funding or sponsoring it.
If the scans are accompanied by Optical Character Recognition, the persons and institutions responsible for itmay also be mentioned in the metadata, espe- cially in cases when Optical Character Recognition was not trivial, e.g. required training the software by a skilfull operator.
Whenever technically possible, the attribution should be integrated with the files containing the scans. For example, in DjVu format you should use document or page metadata, possibly supplemented by an XMP (Extensible Metadata

Platform) record; in PDF you should use document metadata, possibly supple- mented by an XMP record. Additionally on appropriate occasions, in particular in publications, you should adhere to the general rules of acknowledging the use of other party work.
• Share Alike
If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same, similar or a compatible license.
The results of Optical Character Recognition may be distributed without the original scans if appropriate, for example if they were used to reconstruct the source version of the work; for such purposes the Creative Commons — Attribu- tion — Share Alike license and GNU Free Documentation License are considered compatible with the present principles. The results can be used also in databases or other search engines; for such purposes also GNU General Public License is considered compatible with the present principles. Of course in all these cases the proper attribution is obligatory.
The Polish language version of the principles (Zasady Swobodnych Skanów, ac- tually under preparation) will be considered equivalent to the present English language version.
