Due to the growing automation and needs of product flexibility it is necessary that product information is recorded unambiguously and correctly. lt should be possible that different applications make use of this information. Drawings or parts of a drawing should be available immediately on designing a product using a CAD database system. Product structure has an important role within the product model. Because of the redundancy in traditional bill-of-material (BOM) systems it is recommended to use a generative concept as a basis. Starting with a source BOM a result BOM is determined by means of parameters. As improvement on the generative concept a generic BOM is developed. It is possible to describe a product or part on each level of the product structure, so redundancy is avoided.
PART, developed at Twente University, is a generative CAPP system.It uses the concept of 'features'. It can be used to design new products, to control de production (NC-machines) and it supports production planning.
Last couple of years TNO-Bouw in Rijswijk has been dealing with international standardization (ISO-STEP) and made a reference model for the AEC part (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) named GARM.
