Dear Dr. Kochanowski:
I write to express my formal thanks for the great honor accorded me by conferral of the Pawel Wlodkowic Award. Because of the need to respond to press criticism, I am sure it took more of your time and emotional energy than you had bargained for. I am most grateful.
So grateful, in fact, that I can hardly decline your invitation to visit Warsaw. I will be in Berlin for two different conferences next September, and it would be possible to tack on a brief visit to Warsaw when they are concluded. I could arrive the evening of the 22nd and depart the evening of the 24th or the morning of the 25th. My wife will be with me in Berlin, and perhaps would accompany me to Warsaw. Because other organizations will be responsible for our transatlantic flight, I would require funding only for the added expense of the Warsaw detour—and perhaps for living expenses in Warsaw, if we are unable to stay at the ambassador's residence.
Let me know if these dates are convenient for you. I hope you have received by now the three books I forwarded earlier. Best wishes for the New Year.
